"It's not ambiguous, there's just a lot of stuff you might want to do that I'll have to make a ruling on" might be the single best description of the 5e rules I've ever heard.
To be fair if you had a ruling for absolutely everything including minor things that probably only happen once because of some vague weird situation, the dnd books would be absurdly big and impossible to navigate. Rules light doesn't mean not being able to do it. Just means to keep it simple.
@@wolfjack5802 that’s an important distinction imo
@@wolfjack5802 sounds awfully close to 3.5e
Ty RSS
@@wolfjack5802 there's a difference between number of rules and specificity of rules though. Most games don't require a Sage Advice twitter account constantly making rulings because the answers are in the books
Nails: I can't use my arms
Judge: Is there a ships doctor (ignoring the cleric)
Dr: Lets amputate
I was thinking "amputating is the extent of my medical knowledge" is what the doctor would say. Also, the doctor usually was also the cook for obvious reasons
I love the solo cameras when Matt and another player are interacting more.
"You should always plan on getting into a fight" is probably the best advice you can have for running any kind of D&D campaign I have ever heard.
I am now convinced that Tom and Tom are the same person from different time periods. What secrets has Future Tom brought to our time?
If a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to hear it, it makes it sound in the Astral Sea.
Now i imagine a constant drumming when you are in a forest in the astral sea, because there are constantly falling trees somewhere...
I love how they resolve things in combat. Matt just makes a ruling and they move on. No checking the rules.
No one arguing the ruling he makes is also nice
"He gets allot of 20's behind the screen" that one got me
Arygo87 my players have said the exact same thing. Feelsbadman.
But Colville also says he fudges dice for more drama, so it's a fair point in this case! ;)
I can understand doing that in *very* rare circumstances but imo the random RNG makes for better drama and fun for everyone involved including the DM.
@@rogermarks1110 I think he goes with the randomness of dice until they stop being dramatic
@@benry007 agreed
I feel like your initiative bonus should be based on your int mod while you're in the astral plane. That would be cool.
Stolen
I always felt like reflexes and dexterity were sepperate, and that the prior is more wisdom. Alternatively, the fact that you are taking initiative and swiftly choosing to act without thinking first, might make an argument for charisma.
Note that this specific thing might suck for war mages, unless you let them add it twice
The Astral Plane used to substitute your Int, Wis, and Cha for Str, Dex, and Con and you could move like 5ft/int modifier (might be wrong on that) it was cool but COMPLICATED
@@badasunicorn6870 Pathfinder 2e has a cool way of dealing with this! Whatever skill you use to bring you into combat is your initiative. Sneaking up on an enemy? Stealth. Smashing through a wall into the fight? Athletics. Distracting them? Performance etc. Perception tends to get used when nothing more specific applies.
I’m really loving the background music I’m hearing. It fills the occasional silences really well. I hope that Matt continues to use tracks in the rest of the campaign to provide some auditory ambiance.
Did Matt ever say where he got this from? So atmospheric!
@@duncforduk he probably made it himself on the Timerider. He has a soundcloud
The shades will forever be iconic, haha.
Watching the over thinking during the first part of the game is what makes D&D fun and unique in every game.
I love all the references to Elric, Corum, and Spelljammer!!
I've got to say if my character was in this story, I would do all I could to get back to the astral sea and explore exactly wth is going on with the whale judge saw and the giant with the net.. Because I'm sensing those two are connected and that just seems like a fascinating story in of itself to explore more of. Fantastic storytelling, thank you for sharing!
Yeah for sure, interdimensional stuff is always a blast.
was the whale the astral sea? i thought that was normal sea. I may be misremembering
@@mibber121 yes, whale was normal sea b/c it was seen in a wave, the Astral Sea is described as completely calm and flat.
@@mibber121 yeah, normal sea, it was during the night as they were keeping a distance from the maelstrom
This is so awesome, thanks for putting it out! I'll be trying to get current asap
Discovered this through your Dune games (cheers RUclips algorithm). Loving it so far!
FUN FACT: Starboard is derived from back when boats used steering boards(Oars) on the right rear of the boats.

Is the moment when Anna referenced Lying Cat and became my favorite.
"I'm good at accidents"... OW!
Awesome live play D&D show. Watching it through again. Love Mat Colville and his team at MCDM. I have all the books they've put out (waiting for Flee Mortals! to arrive). Keep making awesome content guys and gals!
You guys have such an awesome group, please keep it up!!
The rat analogy made me think about Midnight Run with DeNiro, "Eddie...you f*ckin' rat!" (best conversation ever)
Was Sweets real name Little Mac? Hahaha
Going to reconsider how I play the planes based on this.
He is a hero to captain Jack Aubrey who served under him as a LT, at the Battle of the Nile. Aubrey also dined with him twice and Nelson spoke to him briefly both times. It is possible that Tom Pullings may also have served under Nelson as a Midshipman as he mentioned that Nelson always said in battle "Never mind the maneuvers, just go straight at them."
Late to the party, but really enjoying this. Matt has obviously read Moorcock; Giant figure dragging a net… I’m really getting sucked in.
2:37:33 Two-Shoes glare, wants to join the fight.
love the Dune book on the shelf, good session too
That hellish rebuke and Matt's reaction, it was great ! :)
I tried getting to the bottom of the "cosmo reverb" mystery, but it's tough because now a person with the handle "cosmoreverb" (presumably your friend) is just popping up all over in my searches.
I love the end of this episode. It feels like they are in a Star Trek episode
I got started on D and D streams with critical role, based on recommendations. CR is a great show, but it has a tendency to drag and to play it safe (although I'd watch Liam O'Brian anytime because he's a fantastic gamer and RP'er). I wanted an alternative to that show, because I felt it could be done better. I've seen a lot of spoofs and knock-offs, and that's exactly what they are. They're trying to replicate CR instead of being their own game. The Chain is literally the only one out of the several D and D streaming campaigns that is better than Critical Role. It's not only better, its significantly better. Many times during CR I get bored and start to browse reddit or play a semi-concentration game like Slay the Spire. Only The Chain has kept me engaged the entire time.
The ideas, the tactics, the attitude, I am bought in 110% and it's only the third episode. I can't recommend this enough and highly suggest others do so as well, because this is straight up the best D and D show there is and i would hate to see the DM and players lose motivation due to lack of numbers. Get on it and help get the word out!
if critrole is your baseline, the first thing of its kind that you got to know, you can't be surprised if every other DnD stream reminds you of it.
Loved the Michael Moorcock reference
Awesome stuff!
Consider your Fisher 100% stolen
Big same.
The fisher was indeed 100% stolen. Matt already grabbed it from some novel.
Man i love this wish i knew people who play this game
Like the introduction of ambient music. Need some combat music, now.
Maybe they’re born with in, maybe it’s Mind Flayers
Would have loved to see copper play up goblins cruel sense of humor and nature like he did having big cat slap the slackers who weren’t focusing hard enough
At 3:40, I feel oblidged to say that i get the Hotblack Desiatio reference! 42!
Am I the only one who gets Ben Wyatt vibe from Tom?
I feel that. Totally see it.
I see your Where No Man Has Gone Before references, Matt.
Cranium rats! I love planescape. Hell yes
00:35:00 Das some juicy foreshadowing is what that is :D
there is a star trek episode like this
Indeed. That’s where Colville got the idea. Episode 3 of the first season, Where No Man Has Gone Before.
Crappy day at work. Got not much done and half of what I did accomplish was useless busywork no one should have had to do.
Try to relax with a former favorite channel (not this one) but it's gone from being humorously, occasionally political to being relentlessly, mind-numbingly, radically, hypocritically political. For about the tenth time, contemplate unsubbing.
Haven't gamed properly in a year. Really miss my tabletop group. We'd been getting together for literally 25 years. We started a season of Gaslands that went exactly one race, then COVID.
Come to MCDM. If I can't play D&D, at least I can watch some folks who'd be at home in my living room play instead.
Thanks for existing, you guys. I wish we were friends.
Tottaly stealing the sea of stars thing
Is that a Nautiloid?
What warfare rules are being used. Are they in Strongholds, or did he get them from somewhere else?
They're the warfare rules from Strongholds and Followers
I just had a thought. I'm catching up, clearly I am behind, but why does Sweet not have a strength of at least 22? He has a belt of Hill Giant Strength, so he should have a bigger bonus? Unless I missed something, could've just been the DM's rule.
@@hardestyful See, that's exactly my point though. He only has a 17, so perhaps they just aren't showing the adjusted modifier.
@@UforEuphrates Probably cause he could lose it and they don't want to keep changing it.
Hill giant is 21 strength I thought.
@@theendicott2838 the belt str 23 tho
1:20:00 BLOODLUST, YES.
I'm just watching this now, but are there any other campaigns on youtube or any podcasts by Matt?
I believe some of his campaign diaries include actual play, but nothing produced like this.
Matt dealing with Lars and Anna: ruclips.net/video/5ohlA__xABw/видео.html
Why was it explained that it's a mind flayer ship but has duergar on it?
Mind flayers are slavers. They historically create thralls of other Underdark races commonly including the Duregar.
The Mind Flayers had enslaved the Duergar on the Somnium Tenebrous, but were liberated by the forces of Ajax, and given the ship.
So badass to just use fists
21:50 I feel like a good salute for The Chain would be both hands out in front in two half circles, touching each other like links of a chain.
What do I have to search to find this Musik?
Modular synth music.
I think this was specifically made by Matt on the Time Rider - soundcloud.com/matt-colville/sets/the-time-rider (if not, maybe State Azure)
Did Matt change how the Duergar enlarged? RAW it takes an action but that didn't seem to be the case.
More likely he just did it in a cinematic way. Honestly it's better the way he did it.
@@irontemplar6222 oh fully agree. Losing a turn to enlarge against vox machina is a death sentence lol
@@Nerdonis actually a little farther in the video past the point they are introduced. MATT says the chain is boarding them the same way they boarded their ship. The only diffrence being they aren't invisible like the Deugar were.
So it was Invisibility. Not a cinematic skip.
What's the hairbrush story
Where are the rules for warfare fights? Anyone have a link?
Here is a simplified version of the rules:

You can get the rules in Strongholds and followers, but more is to come in Kingdoms and Warfare.

9:24 I cant wait to find out where this is goingg
Best!
WAAAAAAGH!
being a war cleric without being able to take war-caster seems a little off... 1:47:30 , considering that feat is more or less made for that kind of character, but I remember Matt saying that he doesn't use feats as a part of characters. Which I get, but it gimps the class a little bit with the sheer sum of concentration spells there are. Without warcaster, you have to put your weapon or shield away to hold your focus every time you want to cast, eating your actions... personally, not a fan. It's his game and i respect his DM'ing style, just not a fan of that particular interraction. However, im sure it's something that you could work out with him somewhat.
I know this comment is pretty old, but clerics can use an emblem on their shield as their holy symbol, allowing them to be a bit more useful. A lot of DMs I know allow the same with weapons
@@alexandreboucher54 Holy symbols are holy symbols. There are a lot of examples of gauntlets, shields, and weapons engraved with a god's holy symbol. In fact, just randomly off the top of my head -- Shaundakul's entry on Wikipedia specifically mentions that his clerics OFTEN wear his symbol on the back of their gauntlets. Many paladins and clerics would wear some symbol/heraldry of their god or temple affiliation on their livery.
As I rule it. Clerics and Paladins so prayers, so they dont need a hand free, they can use the focus on the shields or an amulet o the neck a ring. The concentration part... yes quite usefull feat.
So their army is fighting and they take a ten minute pause?! Taking a 100 rounds break mid combat is insanely meta gaming..
The audio is a bit too low so far in these videos, I see this one has -5.7dB, hopefully it isn't constant as the series goes on.
....so turn it up?
"When [Buts] grows up, she might be a real wizard. For now she's just a Conjurer."
Was Conjurer one of a Wizard's name levels in early DnD? Because that's definitely not how Wizard works in 5e. Conjuration is a specialization, not a measure of her ability.
Maybe in Matt's setting a "conjurer" is also a rank of wizardry.
If I had to bet he was saying that her NPC abilities are based off of a conjurer but she doesn't actually have class level rn
Exactly, Conjurer is a type of follower made using Matt’s Strongholds and Followers rules.
Why blowing at the goddamn dice... please...
I can't hear what Matt is saying and the others are all way too loud. I can't listen to this.
