Nice vid, as usual from you man. I've bought a fair bit of stuff from AE, including Roland style cymbal toppers to accommodate electronic cymbals which were a fraction of the cost and work great, triple ply mesh heads for a fraction of the cost and which have performed great, Lemon brand electronic cymbals (which interestingly have started popping up on more reputable drum gear sites at much higher prices) which I've had no issues with, floor tom brackets & legs which again have given me no issues, vintage style bass drum spurs which are fine. There's loads I wouldn't buy, and like you've said, you need to be discerning, but there are definitely bargains to be had for the right gear.
Looking forward to your snare drum build. Those prices looked good. When I was picking out parts for the snare drum Eric Lee built for me, I sure dropped a lot more.
I bought those hoops knowing there were aluminum. I wanted to try them out because the Yamaha alu hoops are impossible to find now. They have the same kind of rigidity for tuning stability as regular die cast but they are far lighter (which is a plus in some ways) and they don't feel as hard on the hands with rim shots but they do tighten up the sound and provide a nice rim shot. I am liking them. They should disclose that they are aluminum though.
Make sure you tighten the shaft of the tube lugs through the back it will take a small Allan key. If not they tend to come lose and the shaft will spend. Hope you know what I’m talking about
What a fun video, Mike, and thank you for sharing. I have watched a few reviews about Temu drum products lately. I am just too Leary to order anything like a throne, cymbals, or drum heads from them. It is pretty much a hit/miss deal when it comes to spending $100 or so.❤️🙏❤️
Yesterday I answered a survey at aliexpress. Told them to improve the professional drum department Can we call it Synchronicity in today’s world? Love your videos Mike!
There's certainly a risk, because they can't help with any questions about products, and the listing info is limited, but the gamble can certainly pay off with these prices if it works.
@@malonedrum I remember when Sweetwater didn’t have a drum department. I have no doubt that, in the near future, people will be able to buy a Starclassic Maple from them.
Funny you made this video. I’ve been thinking the same thing about ordering stuff on there every time I go on that website seems to give me a headache lol the”trick” throw off actually seems to be good to me ive used it and lugs I’ve bought through someone else that got them through that site and it did seem like you need the right size the threading doesn’t go all the way down some of them I had to re-tap Just to clear the threads out but I guess for the price can’t beat it
Hey Mike love ur vids. Wondering about the throwoff. Does it have adjustable hole spacing? Wondering if it would fit on my vintage slingerland 6 lug without having to drill. Thx man!!
Definitely avoid their heads and regular cymbals. I did get a full set of low-volume cymbals (14" hi, 16"+18" crashes, 20" ride) for $80 on sale at Amazon, but same ones on Ali are over $100. They are excellent. I can keep my Zildjians packed away for recording.
I'm not a huge fan owing to the difficulty of returning things. If you're okay with probably getting working gear, but occasionally having to eat the cost, it's fine. Kind of like ordering off-brand stuff on Amazon: some of it's fine, but some is pretty junky. I'd much rather order from Drum Supply, Portsmouth Drum, or Drum Factory Direct for stuff like this. If I can buy locally, even better, though my local store sometimes suggests the above if they don't have something.
If people are buying tension rods, understand one aspect that should be considered. The good old ones had larger diameter between end of thread and head. Why is this important? It means that when used in conjunction with ring-dampening washers, they are a tight fit, and succeed in dampening ringing from lugs, rods and hoops. The newer rolled thread ones might seem ok but the washers won't fit snugly. Also the rolled threads aren't always perfect meaning the friction is inconsistent which is a bitch when tuning
@@malonedrum some of the very big companies such as Pearl are using these new rods. Obviously a cost thing, but not well understood in terms of the overall acoustic effects
The only thing to keep in mind. Using the Trick throw off as an example. That design is likely stolen from them. Happens all the time. Trick likely had it made in china and they just took the design and made their own. If it looks just like another original design, it probably is. Buy the original and support American makers.
One of the most active channels about drum projects and drum vlogs. Loving the consistency Mike! Thanks for the videos.
Appreciate it
The hoops are cast aluminium, so they the same as the Yamaha hoops. They’re light because they’re aluminium/zinc alloy. 👍
Yes, a bit of a bummer for what most people look like in “Die-cast” hoops, but it was at least accurate on the site.
Mike makes the videos we need

Bro I love you, straight up.
Bro, can I get a free Pizza?
@@malonedrum idk about real pizza but I'm a designer if you ever want merch! haha

I bought a lot of parts from Aliexpress and they worked fine.
Great to hear!
I was very recently contemplating buying some drum stuff from here so this is perfect timing.
Glad to hear it!

Thanks Mike AliExpress always intrigued me, but I've never tried to order anything. I know that have drum covering too.

I've wondered about Aliexpress' viability. Thanks for sharing this information, Mike.
There’s some real deals here for sure.
i bought a set of those same chinese "die cast" hoops off ebay years ago...they're super light, not bad though imo snare i have them on sounds good!
Not bad, but not what drummers look for in “die cast hoops” I think.
@@malonedrum definitely not haha

Too early to tell

Absolutely agree. Have to think international suppliers are skirting US patent laws that may not apply to them in their country
Hoops are probably aluminum.
They are.
Those die-cast hoops are more than likely made out of zinc, which is very thin.
