That story brought back some memories for me... I lived in Houston Tx when Katrina hit. My house was not hit, only a few branches down. I did prep 1 week before it hit, so we were stocked with a lot. Our power was out for 17 days but we did get a generator the last 10 days before power went on! Because I worked for an Airline, the employees were given cases of water and Ice daily. I will never forget Katrina. I'm so glad your family was safe as well. God Bless 🙏🙏🙏

I’m sorry your family went through that hurricane ordeal. I live south of Houston Tx and I sat on the floor crying 😢 I really was crying that people were leaving their animals behind. I’ve been through a lot of hurricanes and we never left any of our animals behind. It was hectic and the animals were terrified traveling in the car. It took us 24 hours to go from Houston to San Antonio which would be a 3 hour drive on the normal.

NOLA is like my second home, my brother has lived there since the 70's and still does. He and his wife left the day before too and drove to Iowa to stay with me. After two weeks, they drove to Houston and stayed with a friend to be closer to NOLA, My brother did the same thing, George, and drove to their home but he amazingly got permission to enter from a sympathetic soldier. Their home had minimal damage located over by the fairgrounds. They were both social workers and stayed very busy helping the ppl of New Orleans, I went back many times after katrina too, I wept for what once was, especially the 9th ward!!

I’m watching video’s here on this channel too as of yesterday. Lilly you and your family could write a book & sell the movie rights. Lots of stories. I know most people have them but your family has come a long way to better times. I’ve sometimes been stuck wondering when things will get better & that stems back from generations. I’m a believer & I believe your channels are meant to be successful because of the encouragement and help they offer. I watch late at night and your video’s calm my over-thinking mind. I have surgery next Tuesday which I’m nervous about & watching your life stories (incl Gigi, George, Chloe.. everyone) and hearing their/your faith & reliance on Jesus’ grace and goodness helps me as a Christian. Do not be anxious about anything, Thank you.

Until one actually experiences a hurricane first hand, you just can’t imagine how frightening and loud they are. I used to hear people say that a Hurricane sounds like a freight train well, I never believed them until we went through Andrew back in 92. Trust me, they sound exactly like a freight train going through your house also, all of the water in your toilet bowl gets sucked out through the vent pipe. You can drop things near your toilet and they too will get sucked into the bowl and out through your roof vent pipe. Two of my good friends just lost everything during Hurricane Ian this past September. The water surge reached about 2 feet above their homes. Hurricanes are not fun. 😢

On that Saturday I had just moved my college freshman daughter into Tulane when they told us to take our kids home. We left all her things in the dorm and checked out of our hotel. I called Lake Charles and got the last room at a decent motel. All of the casinos were booked. The next day we were headed home to San Antonio. When we got to Houston they had shut down the expressway for routine maintenance repair. You can’t imagine the traffic. My daughter went to one of her back up schools for that fall semester. She returned to Tulane for the spring semester. Every thing was just as we left it in her dorm. Tulane did suffer damage.

Lilly, thank God your family was able to evacuate safely and had the means to travel and purchase a new home and car; many others have not been so fortunate. The devastation caused by Katrina (2005 Cat 5 hurricane) and the levee breaking was unbelievable. A lot of what George and Susan related is very familiar to those of us living in hurricane-stricken areas.
We've been blessed to survive many hurricane events in S. Florida. Andrew hit SE Florida in 1992 (also a Category 5 hurricane). Unlike Katrina which was a water event, Andrew was largely a wind event that left large areas of southern Miami-Dade looking like it had been hit with bombs. Trees were snapped in two or uprooted and roofs blown off houses everywhere [We were living on Miami Bch at the time, a mandatory evacuation area. So, we escaped to Orlando to wait out the storm.]
Irma struck in 2017, another Cat 5 hurricane. It was HUGE and covered the entire state of Florida. We evacuated in advance of the storm, heading north to SW Georgia, with traffic along major highways at a crawl (a normally 5-hr. car trip from Miami to Ocala took 12 hrs.!) Gas and available hotel rooms became scarce or non-existent across the entire Southeast U.S. as people everywhere evacuated in anticipation of the storm's path northward.
The next Cat 5 to strike S. Florida, was the recent Hurricane Ian. So thankful that Ian did not hit our area in Miami-Dade. I like to believe that I "prayed it away". 🙏😊However, the people of SW Florida were not so fortunate and suffered catastrophic damage. Prayers go out to them as they struggle to rebuild. 🙏❤

Your Katrina story was fascinating and tragic at the same time. Like how you stay positive no matter what. The wreck in Miami then moving to New Orleans. Guardian Angels everywhere. We evacuated to our hometown in East Texas for 6 weeks. Your stories I could relate to of sharks and alligators, stinky food and the heat. Cleaning the refrigerator. Thought I would be sick. Waiting for stores and restaurants to open. We were very blessed in River Ridge. Friends across town in Chalmette were on their rooftops for days. Prayers for all of the people there that lost their lives when the storm surge caught them by surprise. Lived back and forth between Natchez and New Orleans for years after. 3 hour ride is shorter than evacuating to East Texas for every hurricane or levee scare if water is high. Retired here now. Yay George for saving the cat & Gigi with the Suburban. I understand Chloe about broken bones and can’t walk. Takes lots of healing & therapy to walk good again. Me and crutches were not compatible lol. It was a wonder I didn’t break something else. Great for reaching light switches, etc.!
