Well I might do this with an old urn I picked up, been wondering how to clean the inside and this might do it. I’ll just get a stiff wire brush to push in and scrape inside then finish off with a brass/bronze polish
This was awesome for my brass cabinet handles I did 40 of them 3 at a time. Came out BEAUTIFUL. But I noticed the ones I did a month ago started to tarnish a little not as bright. So I bought Brasso and shined them up again. I decided to try one hinge since I really did not want to unhinge all those cabinets. LOL Just as good as the boiled handles took 2 seconds for 1 hinge. Few !!! Now maybe the handles would not have come out as nice but I certainly do not need to unhinge and boil all of the hinges.
After you clean your brass hardware and get them all shiny I would recommend spraying the hardware with a clear lacquer. It will help them to not re-tarnish for quite some time. Usually will hold up for 10 years.
Sharon Carter I’m not sure. I’ve only cleaned hardware that wasn’t painted. I guess it’s worth a try. If it doesn’t work I would recommend soaking the hardware in Citristrip. I really like this paint stripper.
I thought boiling vinegar created acetic acid fumes? Not sure if this is safe, but if it is, perhaps the risks can be mitigated by boiling in a well-ventilated area?
A wire brush will scratch the brass and give it a matte look - so do not do that with shiny brass hardware. You're better off using 0000 or 00000 steel wool - but even that can dull the brass surface. Be gentle. I have found, after trying this method, that in the end the safest product to use to clean brass hardware is brasso and a soft cloth or a brass cleaning product that is non-abrassive. It is actually faster in the end - because either way - you are scrubbing.
Wow! That was a game changer! The wire brush sealed the deal 😊
Thanks for sharing!
You are so welcome!
Thanks for the tip. I'm about to clean & paint a small bedside table. I like the hardware it has now, it's just seen better days. Cant wait to try it.
Glad I could help!

@@goodboi4939 Best of luck with that. I hope it works for you.

I tried it with some old hardware, but I used an S.O.S pad instead of a wire brush, and it worked great!
That's a great idea too!
My aunt did this but used a crock pot. Worked like a charm!
I've heard of that method. Takes a little longer though.
I admire a nice piece of brass..
Me too ... especially with morning wood 👍😂🤣
So how does it taste after it cooks? A bit brassy?
Very funny :)
Is it just a picture or? It does not look to be brass any longer? Is it supposed to be buffed afterwards?
If I have brass pulls from probaly the early 1900s with paint on them does anyone think that paint contains lead? Thanks
It most likely does. If you want to test the lead they do make kits to test.

My hardwear is covered with paint. Will this method take the paint off?

As long as you have a ventilated area and aren’t using a large amount it’s totally safe.
Oh good. 👍

How about an old toothbrush?
It looks the same as at the beginning.
No, it doesn't ... better get to your eye doctor immediately.
Thanks!
No way am I doing this in my house on our stove.
To each their own. I've been doing this for years. Works like a charm.
I just did it. It's really not that bad. Smells just like vinegar.
@@MECoral I agree with you the smell isn’t bad at all. Glad you tried it out.
