    The end is very haunting, when the truck is lying at the bottom of the cliff twisted up and leaking diesel and oil, the way it's wheel finally stops turning is like its taken its final breath and it's last heartbeat.

    What this film does instead, that the truck-driver becomes irrelevant, and the truck becomes its own being, a mythical beast, which falls into the chasm with a real kaiju-scream. Beautiful.

    Duel is a brilliant film! Another great review guys, but this time on a television film. You should review the pilot episode of The Incredible Hulk starring Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno. Fun Fact: Did you know that Duel was an influence for one of the Hulk episodes in the first series with an episode titled "Never Give A Trucker An Even Break." They reused a lot of car chase footage from the film and placed it within the episode. According to Steven Spielberg, he was vivid at the fact that they deliberately used sequences from his film without asking for permission first.

    I for a long time didn't realize the license plates in the front of the truck were from the other victims of the driver. So the truck driver is showing off his kills.

    • @22Tesla
      @22Tesla Месяц назад

      I don't think that's the case. I mean, you could see it that way, and it totally would make sense for the character of the trucker. But I think it's something more mundane; I heard/read somewhere that truckers back in the day needed a licence plate of the states they operated in because certain laws vary state to state and you needed to be compliant with those laws in order to operate. I checked a couple sites and one other reason, at least in film making, is the cultural identity of truckers (freedom to travel wherever they want because of their job.)
      So it's either mundane and normal, or it's just for the context of the movie, which I could see being true for this character.

    • @josephmedic7478
      @josephmedic7478 Месяц назад

      i thought plates were his too, but I remember Spielberg saying the plates were of prior victims. Can anyone confirm?

    I love this movie. Great review, but I'm surprised you didn't mention the most obvious plot hole: i.e., why didn't David Mann just turn his car around and go home once the truck had passed him and was out of sight for hours? Since the truck was up ahead and out of sight, the truck driver would never have seen him turn around. And by that time, the whole reason for David's car ride (his meeting) was out the window anyway. Like I said, I really do love this movie, but that part never made sense to me lol.

      no offense but the truck isn't haunted, several times throughout the film we clearly see a hand driving it and there are multiple instances in the film where the truck is absent, so it can be logically deduced that it filled up on gas off-screen, explaining why it never seems to break down, not to mention blood is seen at the end when the trucker's killed, the truck is in no way paranormal, there's too much evidence against that theory.

    The trucker helps the bus for the same reason he salutes the train-- he's an oldschool trucker, and at one time there was an unofficial code to basically be the boy scouts/big brothers of the road-- a far more masculine and trustworthy figure on the surface than some jumped up little suit in a random tin can.
    Basically the truck/trucker is adding insult to injury by ceremonially cucking the guy before it kills him. There is one shot that says it all, I believe it's either the snake or the payphone scene-- or WERE those the same scene...? Anyway, the truck rolls right over the camera and we see it's massive working driveshaft almost hanging directly in our faces as the engine guns up and growls.
    Those scenes are the most BASIC point of the movie-- nature is out for prey. Hungry beast versus nervous little rabbit. Giant masculine icon versus Mr. Mom. It was exploring themes either ahead of it's time or only JUST coming into notoriety at the time.
