- democracynow.org - In a Democracy Now! exclusive, legendary activist and scholar Angela Davis speaks out after the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute rescinded a human rights award for her, reportedly due to her activism for Palestinian rights. In September, the institute announced that it would award Davis the Fred L. Shuttlesworth Human Rights Award, named after the civil rights icon. But last Friday, the institute voted to withdraw the award and cancel this year’s gala event. The institute rescinded the award days after the Birmingham Holocaust Education Center sent a letter urging the board to reconsider honoring Davis due to her support of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions. Others in the Birmingham area criticized Davis for her support for the Black Panthers and Communist Party. We speak with Angela Davis in her first television interview since the controversy began.

It would have been nice if she had stood up for the Eastern Europeans who were oppressed under Communist Rule in the 60's to 80's. She did not care about them, favoring East Germany over West Germany, though the East Germans built a wall to prevent East Germans from going over to the West. Integrity she has none and has never had. Compare her to Joan Baez, protested against Racism and the Viet Nam involvement of the USA, but criticized what was happening in Cambodia, and now Kampuchea when in was taken over by Pol Pot. but the left slammed her for that ill the 1970's. Davis did not defend her.

Dr. Angela Davis is a Humanitarian HERO. She is held in high regards, Worldwide.
I was privileged to hear Angela Davis speak in Boston in the 70s. I'll never forget it. There were several black armed guards stationed around the room and everybody (mostly white young people) was cool about it. We knew we were not the enemy, and that we were hearing the truth. I don't remember her words, but I remember the power.
You know, I've never been active in supporting Palestinian rights above the most surface level, but after this I see just how much power is aligned against that. I'm therefore increasing my donations to the organizations working to heal that situation and bring justice to the afflicted.

As a Black American I am proud that sister Angela Davis, a long time veteran of the Black Liberation Movement, has decided to speak out in support of the oppressed people of Palestine. And, by the way, there are also progressive Jews in the USA who also supports the human rights struggles of the Palestinian people.

The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute has lost credibility as it has contradicted its purpose. It has ignored thus supporting the oppression of Palestinian people who are under an occupation. Palestinian people's civil rights have been taken away by imperialistic invaders from Europe. The award no longer has any merits as it has become a political tool. This is an insult to the memory and life of Fred Shuttlesworth.
Shameful is a word that I have personally only ever heard used by Jews and Palestinians. (Shared cultures, eh?) I think Frederick Lee Shuttlesworth might have found it useful to describe the cowardly actions of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. from my observation it seems to be a semantic problem, the inability to separate the critique of powerful institutions ( Israel) and state-sanctioned aggression from the citizenry seems only to apply to Israel and the default argument is always antisemitism ( which is a sensitive topic especially in the West because of it historical precedence). Boycotting is a Constitutional right. Call your Representatives and Senators and demand they continue blocking legislation that blocks US from supporting BDS. Or pass legislation that simply allows us the public to boycott whomever! Boycotting works: bussing laws in GA during 60's , anti Apartheid South Africa in the 80's, and many more.

The boycott is in response to the Israeli government, not to the people, or the state, or their religion, but the government. I will say this - Yes, we have a less than perfect reputation for tolerance here. You forgot to mention our particularly cowardly 'neutrality' during World War 2, for example, when one of our government Ministers - who was fiercely anti-Semitic, and an admirer of Hitler - did his absolute damndest to prevent any Jews finding sanctuary in Ireland. As such, we most certainly have Jewish blood on our hands in that respect.

Yes indeed, if anyone knows about mass hatred, bigotry and intolerance, it's we Irish - God knows, we were happy enough to practice such behaviours for centuries, become virtuosos of cruelty in the process. I could hardly say otherwise - finding the time to ensure that thousands of Jewish lives Would be lost to Hitler, ensuring that our own Jewish population would shrink even smaller, was easily achieved by us as we wallowed in passionate bigotry ourselves.
You see, I can play this game too, and much, much better than you - because who knows better about the failings and cruelty of the Irish (past and present, as we're still far from a virtuous people, today) than an Irishman?
But.
None of our historic and undeniable failings of the past prevent our criticism of Israel today. None of that prevents my criticism as an individual - which I clearly am - of Netanyahu in particular, as a man mired in corruption (as is his family), and his steadfast failings to move the peace process along.
Instead, without fail or exception, he claims that every attack and criticism of him, or his Cabinet, is anti-Semitic, and driven by a hatred of Jews. This is a cheap, cowardly, and pathetic stance which attempts to swerve blame and responsibility in a particularly low manner, given how reprehensible actual anti-Semitism is.
I'm not engaging any further with you - that's more, more than enough, I Know! (Sorry, folks) - but I'll just repeat that violence, bigotry and anti-Semitism are all wrong and inexcusable, and ordinary Israelis are just as wonderful, and awful, and ordinary, as anyone else the world over, and have the right to live in peace without fear of terrorist attacks from Palestinians.
But.
Boycott Israel.

I grew up in West End in Birmingham and have admired Angela Davis for many years. As women who've spent their lives working for social justice, both Angela Davis and Amy Goodman are heroes to me. Thank you both for your lifetimes of service and your inspiration. Recently I heard somewhere that African Americans don't like the use of the term "apartheid" used in reference to Israel/Palestine. I don't remember now where I heard that but somehow I doubt Dr. Davis would agree. I think she would agree with me that apartheid is the most accurate term for Israel/Palestine today. Considering the full court press against BDS in our courts, in our legislatures, at our colleges and in our social institutions, it is well past time for all people of goodwill to push back in a coordinated way against the organized efforts to squash our first amendment right to BDS and to publicly condemn the treatment of Palestinians both inside Israel and the Occupied Territories by the Israeli government.
Israel is the historical homeland of the Jewish people period. Palestine is a political fantasy created by the Arab world and Arafat. And anyone who supports the destruction of the State of Israel ie genocide is a Nazi.
Much love and respect for Queen Angela Davis. She is a world leader and deserves 💜 much respect!
When I was still a schoolboy in England back in the late 1960s Angela Davis was a hero of mine, an inspiration, as she was for so many of my generation and of the generations that followed. We all, I am sure, hold her in our hearts still, and that must surely be a greater accolade to a courageous human rights activist and exemplary scholar than a grubbily withdrawn award.

@Linda Steckel Yes I have been to Israel. There are many wonderful and compassionate Israeli people of course, but I stand by my comments. As Angela Davis said "advocating for Palestinian human rights should not be offensive to the Jewish community" and certainly as an American, you should accept there will be those that advocate for revealing the true conditions the Palestinian people are living under. Squelching all reporting of it and disallowing discourse on the subject is unconstitutional in America. Both sides of this issue should be brought to light, not censored, or I fear antisemitism will grow needlessly. It's time to let up, to open up, and see where that takes us.
