I've had a Nikon and TG4 and the RAW feature is it, especially for underwater. Take both snorkeling an after I processed the TG4 pictures they were stunning. Can't say enough how much I could recover in those underwater shots. If you are at all interested in using it for underwater photography, it is a no brainer, TG5!
Thanks for taking time out of your vacation for your viewers. We're going river rafting in Utah soon and you helped seal the deal on the best camera for the gig.
As a camera I'd say the Olympus is the winner, but if you're diving being able to go down to 30m without a case is a huge benefit and cost savings. Yes Olympus offers a housing to get you go down to 45m (beyond recreational diving), but it's another 70% cost increase. Since I have good options above water, I think I'd go for the Nikon as a diving camera until I could afford a good diving case for my m4/3 camera. Almost every dive I make goes below the 15m mark where the Olympus TG5 is rated, but at the moment I have only gone below 30m a few times. Thanks again TCS for another great review.
Just bought an Olympus TG Tracker for the same purpose. Only in my case, I intend recording from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Vancouver, British Columbia.... probably around 3-4 Terabytes uploaded to icloud in two separate accounts, as soon as I can afford the £5-6000 it's going to cost for the flights, a car, and essential accommodation for the 4,000+ mile road trip of a lifetime. It will be my homage to the country I love, as a heartbroken returned emigre, back to Belfast, N Ireland, via a year in Aberdeen, Scotland, with two of my mother's sisters, after only 10 months in London, Ontario, 1957-58. My parents were 'homesick' after just 6 months. My brother Howard was born in London, Ontario, in June 1958, just two weeks before we returned to the UK. Guess where he is since 2000, as a born-and-bred Canadian?
Great video my friend , I had a question I was looking at this camera and the cannon g7x Mark ii , I have a good cell phone , gopro 5 gopro 6 and a 4 I do fishing videos , but i struggle while filming night fusing videos with those cameras so I was looking at the f stop really I'm not a professional camera man and Kim just learning , I wanted to know if and how much better the G7x Mark ii will be for night videos
I've have the TG2 and TG4 and they are incredible cameras. Sometimes I just use the TG's for on the go picture taking instead of my dSLR or bridge camera. I bought the two lenses mentioned and they are handy. I love the Wi-Fi and GPS features
I agree with another commenter that it was great that your family was ok with this episode on your vacation. It looks like you guys had a great time. I actually went on a similar vacation, frogs and all, over to Maine, and got back just a day or so ago
+Rediscover Film you basically described the Nikon AW1 with the 10mm Waterproof pancake. I loved that combo, and I was really surprised it never caught on. Jordan @ TCSTV
What about the SeaLife DC2000? It's a 1" sensor with a 31mm equiv. f/1.8 lens. I've been curious about it, but the only reviews I ever see are specific to scuba usage.
I was hoping it might be useful as a kind of bootleg Ricoh GR, but I don't know if that's totally unreasonable. I'm that weirdo who would want a scuba cam for regular point and shootery.
This was such a wonderful review and video in every way. Most relaxing review I think I've seen! And I believe I'm going to get the TG-5 ... that macro capability was impressive. And the video quality, just excellent. Thanks again for the great review.
Yeah, panasonic has the same low-light perfomance when it comes to the same ISO. But you should keep in mind that olympus has 1 step brighter lenses and so that you should have compared 1600 nikon VS 800 or 1000 olympus in terms of the same shutter speed
Good comparison - thanks. We bought the nikon, ease of use was the prime requirement. The fact that it used the same cards as our other nikon's, was a bonus.
I don't know what you mean during that one out of focus shot haha. Chris' wife clearly wanted to show us how awesome those boats where back there. xP Great video, hope you had fun on your vacation. :D
Sometimes I use Olympus TG-5 to record video. This camera has the autofocus problem in motion when you record video: the camera autofocus is working not quickly. The problem with camera autofocus in motion does exist. It's better to record in a static position. Besides, there are digital noices in low light if your camera white balance seted as 'Auto' and I'd like to say the problem with diginal noice in low light can reduce if your camera white balance seted manually, not 'Auto'. After recording you can be processed your clips in a video editor in addition to reduce noices.
Hi, for photos to one meter far, to shoot pigeon and pigeon eye, what camera with photo quality do you prefer Olympus Tough TG-5 or canon power shot 730 hs, can you help me?
Awesome review. My wife and I are headed out on a vacation in three weeks (will be in Quebec and Ontario for a bit too). We are bringing our kayaks and folding bikes camping with us. I have a dry bag for my Panasonic FZ1000m2 bridge camera, but find myself missing a lot of shots because I have to stop paddling to get the camera out to shoot. I have an old Panasonic TS3 from 2011 that I used in the water and decided to look for a newer version. Unfortunately our trip starts before the release of the new TG-6 so I’m looking at the TG-5 now. Ideally I’d rent one for a couple of weeks instead of buying one, but not sure yet. The TG-5 looks compelling.
One of my favorite vids was the underwater cameras shootout from 2013 - thanks for doing one more! I own a AW120 which has suddenly died. Not too sad as picture quality was not great and OLED LCD was terrible in daylight. Too bad the TG-870 line is not being developed.
Great review as always, but what I was impressed with is your wife's skill behind that video camera. Wow, she's a very skilled and talented lady, and you two nailed this one!
15:58 How would one access the Olympus TG-5 RAW files? Also, it would be nice to know what the recording times are for each video mode without having to experiment with each mode on my own.
Does the tg-5 have a remote available and i don't mean wi fi. The ricoh wg-50 has a remote available but unfortunatly it still takes crappy pics like my pentax wg 3 i used to have. I currently have the olympus tg 3 which is awesome but only has wi fi remote.
i get your explanation of why you are comparing to each other, but, just curious if you guys looked at any pics vs a cellphone. I was thinking of getting one of these cameras, for fishing but the pics that come out of my iphone SE, to me look really great. One of these cameras would be better, significantly better, right?
Nice vid-I had tg4 for a while, did not like results, got an underwater bag instead. Do miss some of the fun features. Wish other companies would put in that amazing macro and mirror mode.
Thank you for the great video. I've a question to the olympus tg5 equipment. Have you tested the fisheye under water for example for half and half shots? Does this work? I saw a short vid about it where there were water drops on the lenses between camera and fisheye and it doesn't look good by doing half and half shots and it just really worked when everything's under water.
I have a TG-4 and the RAW feature alone makes a big difference. I may upgrade to the TG-5 someday, lots of nice new additions. I really like the ability to use the fisheye converter with it. I have a tiny camera case and fit the TG-4, fisheye, extra battery and charger - not bulky at all.
I replaced my Coolpix 110AW with the W300 cause one peg of the door guard on the 110AW chipped off and water got in. (I NEVER dropped my 110AW, so go figure.) My 110AW was a year out of warranty, Nikon Canada cut 15% or something off a W300. I got this format to take canoe tripping and to vlog a backpacking trip in the Green Mtns in Vermont. Not yet realized. Thanks for the review.
The W300 likely takes sharper pictures, has much better image stabilization, and is more affordable. The TG-5 takes better underwater video, has way better macro (W300 macro mode regressed significantly from the AW1XX series), take better lowlight shots and has much better white balance. It was a good review, but I will disagree that the W300 typically takes warm photos. Quite often my W300 will take cool photos. Sometimes perfect. It would be nicer to see these camera shoot identical scenes to make comparisons easier. Also with cameras like this you have to be very self-conscious about the sun. Overcast, front-lit, and back-lit photos all have dramatically different effects on white balance and have to be tested separately.
Nikon *AW130, AW130 & AW110* used to be priced at 16,000/- INR .... *now* its *out of stock* everywhere & those who are selling it at amazon are asking for upto 75,000/- INR for it Where can I buy any of these in *India* under 16K ?
I chose the Nikon. I'm not a camera guy. I just needed the good low light since I take job pics in attics and print 8X10. Got tired of my coworkers phones looking better than my finepix 90 thats been dropped several times in 3 yrs. What is the best settings for these conditions?
Very very helpful!!! I could not pick between the two. I have always gotten the newest olimpus every time but i think i am going to try the Nikon this time. The main reason is because i always break the Olimpus, so i will try something new and see if that helps. THANK YOU!!
Nice review. I bought the TG-5 to replace our old TG-3, mostly because of the RAW file capture and thus far it's been great. There's a ton of new features too.
Hi, I hope it's not too late to ask this. Would I be able to transfer the pictures and videos to my iPhone keeping the location- and time information intact, so that I can browse my built in photos app and find my pictures in the right order mixed with the photos I took with my phone? I hope you can help. Thanks :)
great review, but I needed to know whether their are any accessories for any of them so that I can use it for handling inside the water as well to take my own video/photos
Hello. I'm looking for a camera or a camera with the ability to take good pictures. I need it for the holidays. I wonder about olympus tg-5 and go pro hero 5. Alternatively Lamax x10 and some camera. What would you recommend? I would like to have good quality photos and videos and not spend money on it. One of the equipment must be waterproof, because I want to take pictures and film underwater.
Yes, the Olympus ring lights are waterproof. They're essentially light guides that redirect the light from the camera's flash and LED, not lights in and of themselves, so they have no electronics to short out.
Thanks for the review. I've had both nikon and olympus kit and am looking for a decent vest pocket holiday shooter rather than carry around my nikon DLSR. After your excellent review I must say I'm leaning towards the Olympus. Imho the raw ability and how the grip is designed makes it for me a more usable device. Against thanks for the over view
Thank you for a great comparison. You helped me decide on the TG-5, mostly due to its a being able to shoot RAW files. Currently the Nikon was $386USD and the Olympus $419USD.
Hello. Please tell me what size lens (Olympus Tough TG-5)? 1.What nozzles and filters available to buy? Please list all that will fit to this model. 2.Is there a (Olympus Tough TG-5) adapter-adapter for a larger or smaller filters by size? 3.If you can please advise the link to order the adapter, attachments, filters, macro lens. Thank you.
One thing that no one covers in their reviews is focus points. I played with the TG3 and it didn't seem like you could manually chose a focus point. Seemed like auto focus also meant auto focus point selection. Can you manually chose a focus point? Does it focus near the edge or are the focus points mainly in the center?
Great vid as always. Love my tg4. These cameras are great on holiday. Lots of underwater video and photos. Great microscope macro for strange creepy crawlers.
You didn't mention the filter adapter for the TG-5. I love using a polarizer which is possible with the adapter while keeping it pocketable. Also as far as the battery goes, I have been getting way more photos than would be indicated from the specs. I don't use the GPS at all and I am sure that this has an effect. I can easy go a whole day on a charge. Also the USB charging makes topping off very convenient. I do, however, find that changing the focus point is really annoying. And I wish it had a manual setting, or some way to slow the shutter down such that I could take "silky" water photos.
yes, it has manual focus and focus bracket. also long exposure with nighscape>>live composite. for long exposure in daylight, use extreme ND filter or improvise with two polarisers stacked.
Hey guys! Been watching since the first battle of f-stop ridge, but I've never commented before. First off, love your work. It's both entertaining and very informative. Second, would you ever do an unsung cameras of yesteryear style video for some vintage lenses? Or do you just do that for bodies.
This was interesting. When you compared the low-light performance of the two cameras I wasn't sure which one really looked better, but I think the Olympus took in a little bit more light. My thoughts are that generally when comparing cameras, sometimes one looks better with one scene and another looks better with another scene. In your low-light comparison you had a light on the building that was shining outwards toward the cameras. I would like to guess that when these two cameras are compared over a wide variety of different types of low-light scenes, maybe we would see different results. I think both cameras are pretty nice.
Yeah this is a hands-down one of the best camera reviews I've ever seen.
Your wife did an admirable job! Always grateful for new reviews, thanks!
Thanks for taking time out of your vacation for your viewers. We're going river rafting in Utah soon and you helped seal the deal on the best camera for the gig.
Excellent review of each camera. Thanks for taking the time out of your vacation for this.
A great review. Thank you the time you took on your holidays to produce it. A big thumbs UP!
Cmon! This has to be the best channel for camera reviews!
Your still helping people make those decisions with this review. Thanks for the review and info its greatly appreciated. Wonderful family as well!
As a camera I'd say the Olympus is the winner, but if you're diving being able to go down to 30m without a case is a huge benefit and cost savings. Great video, thank you.
Great to see some family footage for this review, very nice video as always.
Thanks for taking the time to review these cameras . Looking to get the Olympus TG-5 while it's on sale !

Great review Chris. Appreciate your dedication even when you're on vacation.
Loved the colors on the Olympus.
Erin did a great job with the camera and the whole video has a relaxed family vibe to it. A Danish person would call it hygge. Well done.
This is very helpful. Great video.
Great review, as always, thank you for taking us with you on your trip. They did such a good job.
You Guys are awesome! I´m always enjoying your honest reviews. Big Thumbs up!
Thank you! I was on the fence between these two cameras. This video was very helpful.
Best video so far that I have seen comparing these two cameras (or similar). Congratulations, very good job!
Excellent Chris! Was more fun watching you and your family having a great vacation, but I agree, the Oly gets it!
Thank you family, you all did a great job. Shooting a Fiji 100XT, the Olympus looks like it would feel comfortable to use.
Chris is a professional reviewer. He could review a flip phone and we'd all click and watch. It's like Christmas whenever a new upload appears
Wonderful review! Likely going to buy the TG-5 for our underwater Maui shots. Love seeing Lake of Woods, we spend our summers there 👍🏻
I've have the TG2 and TG4 and they are incredible cameras. Sometimes I just use the TG's for on the go picture taking instead of my dSLR or bridge camera. I bought the two lenses mentioned and they are handy. I love the Wi-Fi and GPS features
Thanks Chris for taking your vacation time to do something for us :) W300 is gonna be my next underwater camera :)
I agree with another commenter that it was great that your family was ok with this episode on your vacation. It looks like you guys had a great time. I actually went on a similar vacation, frogs and all, over to Maine, and got back just a day or so ago
Olympus, please bring out a TG camera with a 1" sensor and a nice 28mm equivalent prime lens (f/2.8). Cheers
+Rediscover Film you basically described the Nikon AW1 with the 10mm Waterproof pancake. I loved that combo, and I was really surprised it never caught on.

You’ve failed to consider that the Nikon AW1 is 3x the cost of the TG-5. 😉
They often flooded.
This was such a wonderful review and video in every way. Most relaxing review I think I've seen! And I believe I'm going to get the TG-5 ... that macro capability was impressive. And the video quality, just excellent. Thanks again for the great review.
Liked your presentation....I love Nikon w300....Thanks
Great video and so many beautiful places to visit over there! Keep it up!
Thanks for the review. I think I'm set on buying the TG5 now for my new underwater camera!

How do the LCDs compare? as a nikon AW120 owner, I can say the OLED display is not visible in daylight.
I used the Nikon the other day diving to about 40 feet in CA using a lighting rig and was very happy with it!
Awesome review. My wife and I are headed out on a vacation in three weeks (will be in Quebec and Ontario for a bit too). We are bringing our kayaks and folding bikes camping with us. Interesting effect on the water when Chris is sitting on the dock at 6.16 minute mark, the water looks like it was shot in 60fps.
You should include Digiscoping features in your reviews! Excellent review.
The logo rendering looks different. Loved the review. You have a wonderful family. God bless them...💐
Chris soon to become my favourite camera youtuber.
Great review and beautiful family. Look out Jordan there are some people competing for your position. :p
Does the tg-5 have a remote available and i don't mean wi fi. The ricoh wg-50 has a remote available but unfortunatly it still takes crappy pics like my pentax wg 3 i used to have. I currently have the olympus tg 3 which is awesome but only has wi fi remote.
I like that new intro!

4:55 best picture of the trip!!!!!!! : ) Great vid as always kudos to your fam.
Super helpful review - fun and informative. Thanks!
Cool of your family (and wife) to support the idea of doing a shootout while on holiday.
Look out Jordan, there's a new cat in town and she's called Erin! 📹💪🏼
+Down Under Vlog Make no mistake, I am very, very nervous about my position.
Jordan @ TCSTV
Down Under Vlog I did the easy part of filming. Jordan still slaved over all the footage and edited this bad boy. Huge thanks to you Jordan!
11:49 I think you are safe Jordan
Nice vid-I had tg4 for a while, did not like results, got an underwater bag instead. Do miss some of the fun features. Wish other companies would put in that amazing macro and mirror mode.
I like the personality in this video, thanks for sharing.
Hello Chris Nichols and hello to Jordan thank you for sharing these great video have a great Thanksgiving and happy holidays
Working on your vacation. What a guy!
Great review, very comprehensive!
The W300 likely takes sharper pictures, has much better image stabilization, and is more affordable. The TG-5 takes better underwater video, has way better macro (W300 macro mode regressed significantly from the AW1XX series), take better lowlight shots and has much better white balance. Overcast, front-lit, and back-lit photos all have dramatically different effects on white balance and have to be tested separately.
I thought the Nikon had a little more/better dynamic range. Your thoughts? Though the Olympus is probably the camera I would grab.
Excellent an informative video, thanks!
Question: How was the audio when doing videos with those cameras? No one ever seems to talk about it.
Nikon *AW130, AW130 & AW110* used to be priced at 16,000/- INR .... *now* its *out of stock* everywhere & those who are selling it at amazon are asking for upto 75,000/- INR for it
Where can I buy any of these in *India* under 16K ?
I chose the Nikon. I'm not a camera guy. I just needed the good low light since I take job pics in attics and print 8X10. Got tired of my coworkers phones looking better than my finepix 90 thats been dropped several times in 3 yrs. What is the best settings for these conditions?
btw, Phones under water is a terrible idea, I dont think you can operate the screen underwater.
Hi, I got the camera to the beach and sand entered under the controls, how could I clean it?
Very very helpful!!! I could not pick between the two. I have always gotten the newest olimpus every time but i think i am going to try the Nikon this time. The main reason is because i always break the Olimpus, so i will try something new and see if that helps. THANK YOU!!

Hows the video stabilization?
Thank you for a great comparison. You helped me decide on the TG-5, mostly due to its a being able to shoot RAW files.
Currently the Nikon was $386USD and the Olympus $419USD.
Amazing explanation.. Thankyou!
Thank you for this video! So much great information!
Does the Tough TG-5 make any noise when zooming in and out while shooting video, or a grinding noise like the Canon G7X?
Hello. Please tell me what size lens (Olympus Tough TG-5)?
1.What nozzles and filters available to buy? Please list all that will fit to this model.
2.Is there a (Olympus Tough TG-5) adapter-adapter for a larger or smaller filters by size?

Never really paid attention to this camera market but the tg5 looks quite amazing for its body size
Came here after Chris's and Jordan's DPReview video featuring these cameras lol
awesome ..!!! thanks for this one ....
Great vid as always. Love my tg4. These cameras are great on holiday. Lots of underwater video and photos. Great microscope macro for strange creepy crawlers.
Final campfire shot: is it from Fubar?
Awesome review as always.
You didn't mention the filter adapter for the TG-5. I love using a polarizer which is possible with the adapter while keeping it pocketable. yes, it has manual focus and focus bracket. also long exposure with nighscape>>live composite. for long exposure in daylight, use extreme ND filter or improvise with two polarisers stacked.
Nice review! I love that the landscape there looks exactly like Finland :) Cheers!
Hey guys! Been watching since the first battle of f-stop ridge, but I've never commented before. First off, love your work. It's both entertaining and very informative. Second, would you ever do an unsung cameras of yesteryear style video for some vintage lenses? Or do you just do that for bodies.
Unsung lenses would be a lot of fun! I'll pitch it to Chris.
