Love it! I was a Rye House and White City fan in ‘77, so that ended well for me! Seeing Les Collins and Michael Lee going at it in this video was fantastic. Two rising stars at the time. Michaels progress each year was immense and we all knew he was going to be World Champion, even as he came through at Boston. I absolutely love these days of speedway. ‘76 to ‘80, unforgettable, larger than life days.

Thanks Paul for the comments . Is Rye House stadium still up and running ?
I am just glad I filmed what I could with this match and glad I managed to salvage it and make something worth watching . Been a fan since 1967 and looking forward to Belle Vue Aces this season . Kings Lynn seem to have turned the corner which is good for the sport !

@@roynicol8353 I think I heard that it is about to be built on, but I am not certain of this. It’s been a while since I saw it.
Yes, I’m glad you captured this too. Lots of history with these two. Loving the National stadium and wish them both well.

Sad how speedway has fallen from popularity, used to be Britain's 2nd most popular watched sport , wish i could go back to those days of the 70's of going to Hackney and Crayford as a kid with my dad and the world finals at Wembley.

The seventies was a great era for speedway . Still exciting to watch , the Grand Prix ‘ s have boosted the sport somewhat in recent times but it’s mainly a Euro based competition , needs to expand to Aussie and US … Think the two leagues should merge together and have a feeder league . Anyway , yes , it was helluva match the Stars v Aces !

I have great memories of going to Brandon to watch the Bees led by Ole Olsen at this time. So sad how things panned out for the Bees.

Yes sir! I started watching speedway in 84' in So Cal,they raced Wednesday night at IMS and Thursday in Ascot and Friday at Costa Mesa and I believe in Victorville on Saturday. The stands were packed most nights of the warm southern California evening and it was some of the greatest times in my life spent with a very special lady friend.

Thanks Robert . It was quite a match at Kings Lynn ! Hopefully all’s not lost at Swindon , they get a good following and have a company trying to set up a place for a track . Could be a project , bit like Workingon , so it can be done . Regards

@roynicol8353 I'd have been about 11 at the time. Me and my dad only ever went to a handful of Aces away meetings and it turns out that this was one of them. I was only a young lad but I can remember feeling quite upset by the way Wilkie was treated by the local crowd. I'm fairly sure that I heard on the coach on the way back that a fan had thrown a brick at Wilkie and it had injured his hand. Would be interested to know if you or anyone else had heard anything similar.

@@johnheavyside6486 All I remember was the Aces manager Eric Boocock thought the Aces were robbed , the last heat was a 5-1 toKings Lynn though … I did interview Alan quite a few years later , he wasn’t bothered about the crowd , his grievance was with Geoff Dalby the referee , who Alan thought should be sacked as he made the wrong decision !!

@@roynicol8353 your footage I'm sure has enabled long term fans and ex riders etc to reminisce and take a trip down memory lane .
It brought back great memories for me from stories my step dad Reg Trott told of the great riders he had the pleasure to ride with over the years like , Briggs , Moore , fundin , Mauger etc . Reg was never a top level rider but solid and reliable .
I travelled with him all over the country when he was a speedway referee after retiring from riding .
So many memories of excitement and awe . I enjoy watching it still on TV but nothing will beat being there live taking in the atmosphere, smell of the methanol and the high octane racing .
I hope one day someone may post a video that will capture a glimpse of Reg in action .

@@davewildey3647 Thanks Dave , I grew up with the Fundins , Maugers and Briggs and had the pleasure of meeting all three briefly at events and meetings . I remember Reg Trott , did he ride for Wimbledon , can’ t remember ! Am sure there must be footage around of Reg somewhere , have got a 1963 match at Stoke to upload at some point .

@@roynicol8353 That's just givene goosebumps that you remember Reg ! He was such a lovely man .
He rode for Wimbledon , Norwich I think briefly for West Ham and finished his career at Eastbourne .
I remember him saying that to begin with Ivan Mauger was not that great when he first started out. But new from early on that Briggs n Moore were foture world champs
But for him he said fundin was the best .
Watching old footage just reminds me of him and always brings back memories of spending time with him at speedway meetings so a big thankyou for your posts and I look forward to seeing the 196e one .
