Today I'm overanalyzing "Knock-off, The Battle for imagination": An indie fighting game in development, inspired by 80's and 90's TV shows, Action figures and other toys, full of easter eggs and references.
Remember those good old times in childhood when we made our Action figures beat each-other while some crazy epic fight was happening inside our heads? Well, the guys that are making this game sure do. This game looks like a gold mine of Easter eggs, secrets and references to shows like He-Man, Conan The Barbarian, Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles, Mazinger Z, Gundam, Berserk and more!

The tracks are from the game's soundtrack.
Disclaimer: I'm not getting anything from the devs to talk about this game, I just thought it looked cool and gave the demo a try :D

i need this game, congratulations on hittin 1k 👍
@@BMPK Thank you so much bro!! 🙏 I'm so happy :D 🤩
Kronan is more likely a reference to Conan, and Kull, or even Krull.
All involved barbarians. Krull involves futuristic space men Vs barbarians.
Thank you random Brazilian that appeared in my recommendations, this game looks amazing but is a shame that impossible to raise that amount of money in just 19 days
@@goldenking-F1994 Thank you very much! Indeed it looks amazing :D but yeah, you're right tho, at this rate it will be very hard to reach it :/ I don't know if Kickstarter lets you extent the period but I hope they do something like that
They got to 60k by the looks of it, ended yesterday I imagine they're going to take that 60k and continue to work on it despite the kickstarter not making it?
@@MechaShredZilla I hope they do that, it's too good of a concept to not become a full game
I'm usually not very nostalgy driven, but this looks totally amazing, and the fact that is not about a specific franchise, but more about the general vibe of all of them makes it even better.
Yeah, they were very smart in this. like "capturing a whole era"
But kids today don't know what kids in the 90s had to go through without social media. we took our action figures and made them fight each other. one action figure on the left hand and one on the right hand and making them fight by using our imagination was our social media entertainment
Best random video I've clicked on in some time! Thanks man
@@otakubell5752 Thank you so much!! 🙏 I'm glad you liked it :D
God, the amount of 80's and 90's action figure that can be introduced into this game for it's character roster could be potentially huge ! Swat Kats, Mummies Alive, Action Man, Gargoyles, Beetle Borgs....
Totally man! the possibilities are endless
C.O.P.S.,Gi Joe , silver Hawks , brave Star , She-Ra ......
M.U.S.C.L.E. Men!
Damn now I need to find mummies alive so I can watch that again.
MASK, Go-Bots, Thundercats, Captain Power...
the biker barrcudas from bermuda, probably a mix of Street Sharks and Biker Mice from Mars.
Or just LeatherHead from TNMT 1987.😅
You're right, I totally missed Biker Mice from Mars 😅
Might as well throw SWAT KATS in there too with maybe a lil Beetleborg.
This is the type of game concept I like. Stop chasing top graphics and do something creative with what you already know. This one looks great and has a lot of potential with so many good ideas.
Totally! also there's so many things you can do with shaders in the graphics front, like look what ArcSys did and basically revolutionized anime-style 3d graphics
Austin Kleon wrote a really good book called "Steal Like an Artist." This game really embodies the message of said book. Love it.
Thank you for the recomendation, Seems interesting I'll take a look into. Yeah their designs are on point
This game looks amazing, it's definitely hitting the nostalgia for me, the fact that they referenced street sharks too along side tmnt and battle toads really hits home, surprised no Gargoyles thrown in the mix, yet. This definitely on my radar now.
Fun fact: development for this game began in 1987
say WHAAAAT?
Huhjhhhhh
hahahahaha!! I got it!!
LOL! Well played daywalker, well played
Similar to how Sega's Jurassic Park was "a game 65 million years in the making"
4:21 Thats a Diablo Cojuelo mask. This particular design is a mask used in the carnival celebrations in the dominican republic
OHHHHH So that's why i couldn't find anything, I was searching for TV shows from the 80's, 90's and stuff. Damn, this masks looks so sick i love it 🔥🔥🔥 It's hypnotising. They could do a game just based of this masks it looks so fire haha, thank you very much for the insight :D
And his hoodie and stance are a hint to Sans from Undertale
Totally need to get this in front of members of the FGC community on RUclips like Maximillian DooD and others.
Rooflemonger made a video about it but yeah, Maximillian would skyrocket this game
@@KiaiStudioAnd Justin Wong..a fighting game legend that often reviews indy games.
Damn this doesn't look like it is going to be backed. This is like a perfect fighting game based on this. It looks great.
oh yeah, hopefully they can get some alternative funding :D
just came to say the show the street shark is from in the game is a parody of Biker Mice from Mars.
Oh yeah you're right :D I totally missed that reference 😅 Thanks for the isnsight!
biker mice is the best
Also extreme dinosaurs
I like the concept of having them based off knock off action figures 😁. This looks interesting. Hope they get knock off transformers too, 😂 oh maybe the biker look is also a play of biker mice from mars.
You're most probably right, I didn't know biker mice from mars, but their logo is VERY similar to Barracuda's. Thanks for the insight!
This looks fabulous. great idea! like playing with our old toys and mixing them in battles!
oh yeah me too I used to do this for hours, it brings such nice memories :D
1:17 Kronan... using that name is actually like pocking fun with a easter egg at some background knowledge. In 1980 the movie Conant he Barbarian was released. They wanted to have a tie-in action figures and if memory serves Mattel made some prototypes. But in the end Mattel didn't get the license. Separately Mattel was working on something else... He-Man. It was in the early stages, but when they released He-Man Dino De Laurentis, the movie company for the Conan the Barbarian movie sued them because they thought that Mattel used ideas from Conan. But the court stated that the only similarity between He-Man and Conan was too little.
Mattel gave He-Man wisely as main weapons on most pack-in pictures his Axe, not the sword. So Kronan gets a chuckle out of me, lol.
OHHH that's some deep layers of covered info, so even the axe has a meaning... brilliant, thank you so much for adding this insight, I didn't know that :D
That big mech was a Shogun Warrior from the 70's...there were giant hollow plastic ones, small die-cast ones, and a comic book series.
Yep. It's a reference to Great Mazingaer
I have been wanting an action figure game FOREVER. Had this idea floating around in my head for years. Imagine the possibilities. The entire TMNT toy line would be sick. Or really anything else lol. This is super cool.
Oh yeah, this is such a genious idea!
Concept is amazing 🤩 I love it
Never heard about this game. This looks awesome. Cant wait to play it
Yeah it sure do!
Rayzenger also has a lot of references to Getter Robo: the first combining mecha anime, which was made by Ken Ishikawa: a guy who worked for Mazinger's creator Go Nagai. So its assist is likely a reference to Michiru Saotome's anime-exclusive support unit.
Thank you for adding a ton of info! I didn't know Getter Robo, I can see clearly the Go Nagai influences in Ishikawa's work, the mechs looks amazing . Also you may be right cause even the collor palette of Rayzenger's assist is similar to Saotome's unit from what I saw here. Thank you for the comment!
@@KiaiStudio No problem. I'd reccommend watching Cheese GX's video on the franchise if you want to get into it.
@@Hawkatana Ok I'll definitely check it out. Thanks for recommending it :D
The drills can also be a Getter Robo reference, not to mention that Getter was a major influence for Guren Lagaan
3:05 "Biker Barracudas" could also be a nod to "Bike Mice from Mars".
This looks so cool. Please give this man the rights to some characters. And yes this is how we played with our toys back in the day.
I really hope that this game manages to sucssed. It looks beautifull and you can see that the developers put a lot of heart and effort in this! Also, cheers from Brazil too!
Rayzenger reminds me of the toys from late 70's early 80's. Shogun Warriors.
You're right! Mattel had a licensed Mazinger shogun warrior toy so it definitely checks out :D
@@KiaiStudio I remember those so vividly, cause I wanted one of those as a child. Parents didn't get them cause they were so tall. I think they were like over 3 feet tall + or - a foot.
Thought the plane assist was a nod to Voltron III (aka "vehicle Voltron"). Specifically to the Falcon VT Fighter.
Ohhh you're right! It's similar in looks and thematically! I think you're onto something 😯
Reminds me a bit of the Core Fighter from the original MS Gundam, but I'm not sure.
@@viniciusbenettigennari oh I see, the colors are pretty similar the Core Fighter's, you could be right :D
Wolfgang's snake special is might be a reference to the SNES version of TMNT Tournament Fighters, where Donatello's Ultimate move was throwing a giant flaming dragon at people.
Ohhh i see! it sure looks similar :D It also could be a reference to Strider Hiryu's special in MvC where he summon the robot cheetas :D
Or the snake lvl in battletoads
That metal-infused synthwave in the background is so sick.
Swedish person here born in the 70's.We had those snake toys here too in the 80's when I was growing up.Cool looking game
Ohh that's cool! It seems it was a very global toy :D
Genius game concept! Whoever thought of this has a potential franchise of their hands.
PS: Needs a GI Joe-styled character
Totally! Such a creative idea :D
Englander here, and a ruddy loved my snake toy.
Ohh how cool! Apparently they also have it in the United States. It seems the snake toy knows no borders 😂
Excellent video. Great work. And thanks for bringing this game to my attention.
I'm glad you liked it!
For years I tell everybody how awesome a fighting game with all those old cartoon super buff heroes would be! He-Man, Street Sharks, Thundercats, Marshall Bravestar, Captain Future and many more! I'm happy that at least a "knock off" version was made.
Oh yeah, this is such a great idea, I cant believe some big toy company didn't thought of this first :D
@@KiaiStudio
Copyrights would be difficult. But imagine a game developer would have enough money to effort this. People would love it!
This looks great!!! Excited to give it a shot!
I hope this game does well because even though I’m not into fighting games the concept and visuals should be rewarded
Yep we also had the snake toy in France ! Memories...
Cool game, cool video.
Ohh that's cool! It seems it was a very global toy :D
Awesome video.. The "Biker Barracudas from Bermuda" is most likely a reference to "Biker Mice from Mars" (Esquadrão Marte no Brasil e Moto Ratos de Marte em Portugal)
Good work 👌👌
I really dig the look of this game, I hope they don't get sued into oblivion. Thanks for covering this!
No problem :D Yeah, I hope that too, I think this one will be fine, cause it falls more on the side of parody, but I'm not a lawyer tho 😅
Canada in the 8Os had the snake ... loved watching the little thing wiggle when u pinched its tail .
Ohh that's cool! It seems it was a very global toy :D Apparently they had it in Europe too
I have one of the snake toys on my desk. I saw it at an arcade and got some tickets to get it. Had one when I was a kid. Funny to see it in this game.
Dude this game looks incredible 😮
it sure does :D
this is the most unique idea ive for a video game ive heard of period
hope that it comes to fruition
Yeah, I hope that too, it's very creative indeed :D
@KiaiStudio i shared this video with my buddy he is gonna try to donate to the project unfortunately i cant donate right now im in the us and got hit by hurricane helene then had a death in the family
but it if gets released ill be one of the first inline to buy it
@@GeorgiaRidgerunner OMG I'm sorry for your loss. My deepest condolences, I hope things get better soon. May God bless you and your family
I'm Brazilian too and my parents are from the Dominican Republic, so I'm pretty happy that this video was suggested to me. I'm gonna back this game and I don't even play fighting games hahaha
oh, I just noticed that I'm too late for the Kickstarter :(
🇬🇦 Mbolo/Salama/Hi👋🏿 ,woooow my heart melted 😍when I saw this game here from a random recommendation from RUclips but am so pleased thank you for sharing this am from 82' this game is amazing I just tried it woooow the gameplay the control?!I have no words 🔥🔥🔥🔥am just gonna make a review also about it🤓... this game has to be completed Am definitely going to pre-order it
@@mappfire17Hiii/Olá 👋 I'm very glad you liked it bro! :D Oh yeah, the gameplay is very good too! 🔥
i'm not about combo's since it's boring to use 1 character. this game looks nice, so depends if they release it on consoles (not current gen only)
This appeals to my nostalgia. Really cool looking.
Totally! It brings back so many memories
Biker Barracudas might also reference biker mice from mars.
It is
2:14 I had one of those too! I'm in the USA, and I remember it not just because it was a fun little physics toy but because it freaked my dad out. He had a pretty deep fear of snakes.
This looks absolutly amazing!
This is great!!
Like a different time line!
Very smart and So beautiful ! This game will be a success 💯
oh yeah it looks amazing
We have those Toys in the US too, I've seem them all over the East Coast. North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Florida. I'd imagine they're all over the US as well. Truly a fun lil toy
Ohh how cool! Apparently they have it in England too, this silly snake knows no borders 😂
For a Knock Off, it's very well done 👏👏🙂
hahaha clever
This is awesome! I hope they are able to get this game finished.
I plan to preorder this on the 15th with their kickstarter. The demo is awesome.
Actually pretty cool concept
Also, Heman was originally based upon the Conan franchise/toys. The Street Shark's "biker" reference was probably a homage to "Biker Mice from Mars" too.
The red British phone box is probably a reference to the blue British police phone box, which was the main disguise of Doctor Who's "TARDIS".
Ohhh right there's a doctor Who's reference! nice. and yeah, I totally missed biker mice from mars 😅 In my defense I don't remember seeing this show 😅
OHHH Wow this looks so COOL!!!
It sure does :D
wow this is crazy 3 years ago i literally told my friends why dont we have a game where the characters look like action figures lmao
I like this idea. Add some Thundercats, 80's TMNT, GI Joe & Transformers characters. Hopefully this game sees completion without any litigation for infringing copyright.
Oh some Thundercats-type character would be so hype
this would've popped so hard during the robot chicken era. maybe if social media were still a thing people cared about, this could get some boosting from the adult swim people
The character observing the fight while wearing a devil mask is a nod to the nationality (Dominican Republic) of the game’s creators. The character wears a jacket with the initials DR (Dominican Republic) and sneakers in the colors of the flag. The mask comes from a traditional dance called Diablos Cojuelos. I know because I’m married to a Dominican haha
This is such a cool reference! I looked more into the Diablos Cojuelos after someone mentioned it here and oh boy, this masks are so sick! It's kinda hypnotizing, they could probably make a game just based of these masks alone haha
Cool game and very goood well researched video ❤
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it :D
it only has 6 characters but it was fun AF
yep :D
this looks awesome, thanks :)
It sure does! I'm glad you liked it :D
Lockjaw also has references to Biker Mice from Mars. And Rayzenger looks like he has some influences from Transformers, the colours are very similar to Optimus Prime, and Ultra Magnus, the Jet assist looks like it has a mix of various forms the characters could transform into from that. The background character looks like a mix of 2 original Playstation game characters, Jersey Devil, and Crash Bandicoot.
Oh yeah, I totally missed biker mice from mars 😅 about the background character, Jersey Devil and Crash Bandicoot makes sense, it really looks similar. People from the dominican republic told me that it's also a reference to "Diablo Cojuelo" a type of mask from the Dominicam Republic (they have some REALLY cool masks btw).
Bruh, This game looks so friggin lit. 🔥🔥🔥
FR it looks awesome
This is freaking genius!
Totally
It will be cool if the limbs can fall off during battle and players can try to reattach them during battle. Like if both characters lose an arm and players can swap the arms during the round, and weapons too.
omg Genius idea bro 😮 that would be sick
this is just incredible!
Wow the style this game has goin looks soooo damn good! They look like actual plastic toys fighting. Definitely keepin an eye out for this one.
Edit: congrats on hitting 1k!!!
@@r3gret2079 Yeah they nailed the style it looks amazing 🔥 Thank you so much bro! Are you still playing AC6? sometimes I want to make more AC6 customization videos 🤩
@KiaiStudio bro, do it. AC6 is amazing. I'll takr all the motivation to return I can get.
Considering that all their characters are mashups, it's fitting the company is called MechaGhidora.
Makes sense! :D
Looks just like the plastic toys from back in the day and I would definitely play this game 👍🏽
It's sure does :D they did a great job simulating the plastic look
The character in the background with the spiked horns and the hoodie is actually a reference to the Dominican Carnival. It is called a Lechon. You can catch those in El Carnaval de Santiago in the north region of the Dominican Republic. It is that carnival's central character.
This is such a cool reference! I looked more into the Dominican Carnival after someone mentioned it here and oh boy, those masks are so sick! It's kinda hypnotizing, they could probably make a game just based of these masks alone haha
Just based on the quality of the art, they should be able to get licenses from all the _real_ original toy manufacturers. This needs to see the light of day, it's a winner!
Totally, the level of quality in the art department is insane
Just some additional tidbits: the special move used by kronan where he holds his axe with both hands while a vortex shields him and damages the enemy is Thor's special move in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom. Lastly the character you mentioned that you had no idea of reference wearing blue jacket and his hands are tucked in it is a reference to a toy line made by Quiccs x Martian Toys. These toys from what I heard is made by Filipinos. Also Oozebite can also be a reference to the Gorgonites of the Small Soldiers movie
Looks awesome!
It sure does :D
It looks Amazing!
It sure does!
this looks great cant wait to play it.
At 4:19 That is a ¨Diablo Cojuelo¨ headpiece. It is a carnival mask from Dominican Republic, even the ¨character¨ is wearing an RD Hoodie and color matching snickers (DR in spanish - Republica Dominicana hence the RD in the hoodie)
The developers could be using it as a mascot for the game as a homage or reference for dominican things
Ohhh I should have figured by the "RD" 😅 But this is such a cool reference! I looked more into the Diablos Cojuelos after someone mentioned it here and oh boy, this masks are so sick! It's kinda hypnotizing, they could probably make a game just based of these masks alone haha
I LOVED street sharks! Always wwanted the toys
The Boy With The Rusty Sword may be a self-reference. This was a webcomic created by a Dominican illustrator. It is possible they're also involved in Knock-Off.
NO WAY! You're right! oh god I totally missrepresented that. I feel embarased 😅
Thanks for highlighting these great Dominican talent
I'm glad you liked it, yeah they are amazing 🔥
The guy with the horned mask is a reference to the "Diablos Cajuelos" of the Dominican Republic culture, they are masks that are used in carnivals here in the country.
This is such a cool reference! I looked more into the Diablos Cojuelos after someone mentioned it here and oh boy, this masks are so sick! It's kinda hypnotizing, they could probably make a game just based of these masks alone haha
Looking amazing so far!
It does!
Pow maninho, excelente conteúdo! Já tô inscrito!
Mto obrigado pelo sub mano 🙏 tmj!
This game looks pretty slick🍻
It sure does :D
you missed an inspiration for lockjaw, he's inspired not only by street sharks but also biker mice from mars :)
Oh yeah, this was probably my biggest miss here... In my defense I don't remember this show 😅
@3:53 Oozebite reminds me of late 80's when fluorescent was in full hype for a few years. Especially in the motorcross scene with stickers with these designs and logo's.
Ohh you're right! definitely fits the motorcross vibe/colors
Sega did something similar in the 90s. It was one of the many VFs clones they made but with sumo rules.
Oh that's cool! I'll probably go after this game to analyze it in the near future :D
I would totally buy this game.
I had a small, amusing experience while watching this video. Roughly a minute in, I was like "why're they going over stuff that's so obvious? why're they repeating like the most famous sword quote in the world?" and THEN I remembered my age, lol. A lot of much younger viewers weren't even alive when He-Man was even mentioned, let alone seen a cartoon featuring him. I'm kind of glad that this game might introduce some of them a little more to some of the concepts of those characters, even if they're different.
Also, we had one of those snake toys! 😎
ok but this game is obviously for old people
@LordsofMedia LMAO I mean you're not wrong.
And maybe Toy Fighter ? That awesome Arcade game 🕹
The Robot dose look like th3 final boss from Toy Fighter ❤
I din't know Toy Fighter! I'll take a look
The character in the background you mentioned on min 4, is a reference to a Dominican carnival popular costume called "diablo cojuelo" developers are from Dominican republic btw.
If this is Dominican, the mascot with horns 4:27 is reminiscent of our carnival costumes and they are referred to as “Diablo Cojuelos.” You will usually see this near Dominican Independence Day Feb 21. He also has RD on his jacket for Republica Dominicana and our flag colors
Ohhh I should have figured by the "RD" 😅 But this is such a cool reference! I looked more into the Diablos Cojuelos after someone mentioned it here and oh boy, this masks are so sick! It's kinda hypnotizing, they could probably make a game just based of these masks alone haha
We had that snake toys in Portugal too :)
Ohh that's cool! It seems it was a very global toy :D
That jet could be a reference to the core fighter from Gundam. Or maybe the support jet in getter Robo.
yeah, you nailed it, these two are the most similar to it
