      Yes, the disco beat which at that moment seemed to so totally dominate the industry that there wasn't any place for any other more complex rhythmic work...I was concerned when it seemed that even Steely Dan had caved to disco, but the last laugh was on them. They managed to employ the 4/4 engine but at the same time made so much more of it than anyone else had thought possible...And here we are 50 years later with a timeless classic..."Glamour Profession" !!!

    • @louise_rose
      @louise_rose 2 года назад +1

      Yep, very subtle and an expansion of the disco formula when it must have seemed everything had been said on the genre. The lyrics are very cool too - without moralizing, they still suggest the dangers and ultimate downfall of these smooth dealers.
      Notice the use of images of shadows and darkness here and there - the lyrics begin with a timestamp, 6:05, the end of a sunny afternoon, the great basket player is standing in the shadows after the game - the next verse picks up the metaphor and moves into the evening, again someone "watching from the shadows". Then in the final verse, a major coke deal is closed after midnight at a night-open Chinese restaurant. The journey goes from late afternoon to midnight and beyond , suggesting a deeper night lurking in the background.

    I’m 72 and have seen SD live right before we lost Walter Becker. They’re my favorite band for soothing my soul when I have panic attacks. They’re better than anything else to calm my mind in this chaotic world we live in,October 19-2023. On the edge of WWIIl and so much more…They’re just the best ,I can’t say anymore than that.

    Such a great recording. Keyboards have that eeriness. Steve Kahn’s guitar work both rhythm and lead unerring. Horn chart awesome. Donald’s best work on vocal. Gadd and Anthony Jackson lay a sumptuous beat. Beautiful work.

    • @dmljones2550
      @dmljones2550 4 года назад +3

      catholicdad Steve Kahn played as to Steely Dan’s go to guitarist on Gaucho. Especially Glamour Profession and My Rival, the latter of which Donald told him to sound like Howling Wolf in his solo. Steve Kahn’s Voicing sounded totally different to Larry although both are primarily Jazz exponents. Larry Carlton did solo on the last track Third World Man . Significantly though the bulk of Third World Man was laid down a lot earlier originally ear marked for Aja. It made the cut because of The Second Arrangement fiasco. Having said that Larry’s solo work on this tune was telling in it’s raw emotion . Fantastic stuff.

    • @catholicdad

      @@dmljones2550 Agreed. You know, it's funny. At any given point in my adult life, my top 10 tunes are all over the place, but now, 40 years later, the title track Gaucho was ALWAYS in my top 10.
      I'd have to say Gaucho, Aja, & The Nightfly (along with some Tom Scott efforts) always my favorite albums.
      Lol, in the 80s, I honestly thought fusion jazz was gonna dominate music for the rest of my life. How wrong I was!

      @dmljones2550 4 года назад

      catholicdad Those albums you mentioned are priceless and have stood the test of time.Jazz Rock Fusion was tried by Miles( Bitches Brew and Jack Johnson) and Weather Report but this music while inspirational is repetitive in nature and lacks melody. And the bloody rappers with their Up Town Baby- Black Cow and Champion in Your Eyes - Kid Charlemagne is sacrilegious.

    This is the epitome of cool, would've loved to see them live. I bought Gaucho when it was first released and Glamour Profession got me.

      In truth, I did play around a bit with editing the sound. Not a lot, but just enough to give it a little pop.

    The Secret: R&B musicians in the 70s & 80s knew to bring in heavy jazz musicians to really expand the premise of their sound. Jazz Is The Father & Mother of All Music.

    Tremendous music with tremendous lyrics. So many drug dealers got off on dealing drugs just so they could hang around celebrities in the 70's/early 80's. It was their backstage pass to be within that inner circle. BTW - has anyone tried Szechuan Dumplings?
