Yes, but did you hear this guy? They give the Eggers back to the fishermen instead of notching them and putting them back. I hope things changed in eight years.
This is a shining example of the potential of aquaculture. I interned with Mote and the FWC in research, and stock enhancement aquaculture with species like snook, tarpon and red drum down in Florida. After moving back to the northeastern US shellfish aquaculture was much more popular, so now I grow mussels and oysters. That job got me more involved in the fisheries, and I noticed a disdain for scientists amongst fisherman. Government funded stock enhancement that gets fisheries workers involved (and paid) is not only good for the environment and ecosystem, but also for the understanding of the need of these programs amongst those who work on the water. Great work guys!
Thank you for all that you all do. These creatures are misunderstood, and not appreciated. I keep a male American Maine Homarus Americanus as a pet, six months now, and his behavior is amazing...his alertness, awareness and manipulation of his territory, as well as his use of tools and cooperative effort with me in keeping his tank clean is jaw dropping.
Your kinda fucking with the whole evolutionary process.... you are releasing genetically deficient (aka darwinism) that were coddled they're entire, life.... of FUCKING SURVIVAL?
beautiful work you guys are doing. i am thinking about building an aquaculture project for lobsters and would love to get some insight and help creating this project in ways that it is sustainable
actually farmed costs about a buck more per 1lb lobster than fishing alone for the same size lobster ... also most lobster farms have a loss rate of 40 to 60 percent ... because like the chicken farmers they over crowd the pens they are growing in
Great work guys. I only wish that we could do such work here in Perth, Western Australia. Also how feasible would it be to farm these lobsters to full market maturity.....I can see that for the future this would be the only sustainable way.
Thanks for your comment and curiosity on this. We aren't a lobster farm - the berried hens (pregnant lobsters) are brought in by fisherman who are already pregnant naturally in the wild. We then raise and release the babies through their most vulnerable life stages to be released back into the wild. This is the perfect sustainable stock enhancement project. See what is going on locally that you can get involved with!
What is the cost of such a program,to start up and implement? That would be a great addition to sandeigo California. What country are they in?That is so freAking smart, really I think that is smart and long term consideration for the fishery
When you think about it, you guys control a portion of their wages. Control a part of an ecosystem. You guys are in deep. Where did you all learn how to do this on such a scale?
It’s pointless to release so many if we can’t get governments to agree zero fishing zones such as off shore wind farm and adjutant areas , so we have permanent self breading hatchery in wild far away from seal colonies, I was dismayed in Maine just how many are being fished out with no regard to stock
This is nice. Good work all round. The pirate music made me laugh. You're doing a great job. I'm a serial marine aquarium owner. But.. I'll always eat lobster. And seafood. Get them numbers up, I'm hungry!
how can i care for one at home as a pet instead of seeing it die else where can i feed it dead gold fish and worms how often do they eat? what water temp do they need my basement is like 60-65F will that be good enough do i need a certain filter or anything or just a bucket with some filter stuff in it and water pump it up to it and let it gravity feed back down and put air in the water will i need a bubbler too?
Brian Hunt I personally don't know much, but you'd need a tank that hits a max of 40C and a pretty powerful saltwater filter. They are bottom feeders, so fish might be a good choice
They all look dead and the water pumps around..lol But its hard to believe they start so dang tiny and then grow into monsters.. Aamzing how they keep track to thousands of those babies..
i have yet to see Chinese lobster cultivation/ hatchery in RUclips.. all i see are cooking preparations.. and yet they're among the biggest consumer of all sea creatures..
ANA do you see all that equipment they have? Even with all that they're still not 100% successful. They still have to release them asap and get ones that have already bred in the wild. Good luck.
ANA It’s a gold mine ready to be tapped. But it’s not as simple as raising them and waiting for them to grow. Already there is research on blue fin tuna and lobster farming. I wish I would have majored in aquaculture to research lobster farming
Lobsters can take up to 8 years to reach adulthood. It would be a financial drain to farm them. Compare that to beef, which is much larger, yields way more meat, doesn't require all of this high tech machinery to raise, and is usually slaughtered between 12-22 months of age.
*Many people don't know that in the early days of America, lobsters were fed to servants because they weren't considered good tasting.* _Must be they never tried dipping them in butter with lemon!_
one fault in their plan ... lobsters are bottom feeders and need the fish and what not that eat most of the larvae lobster so the rest have something to eat ... they would be better off releasing half the brood as larvae and raise half ... then you not only provide food for after they are released but you also increase the living population while placing less strain on the food chain
I don't see why humans don't do this with all fish species also should be a extra tax to buy a fish to support the programs especially now with the CCP China catching all the fish all over the world, 100,000 lobsters a year that is impressive, this video was 6 years ago, do lobstermen notice an increase in lobster catches? since your program started?
I do not agreec with the banding on the lobster claws. Especially for long term captivity. The claws can become damaged over a long period of time from lack of use.
You are right, it is illegal to catch berried hens to be sold for trade - but we are a marine conservation charity whose sole purpose is to raise and release baby lobsters from their mothers through their most vulnerable life stages and then released back into the sea. I have been going down a random lobster education rabbit hole.... thanks to the Maine lobsterman who gives snacks.

Same !
Lol same, he just posted about catching a mom for this purpose

Wonderful job that the hatcheries and the people involved are doing to help us with our food source.

Such a great project! I wish every country in the world would have initiatives like this one to help endangered species. Thanks for your work.
This organization is so inspirational. Its rlly rare to found these ppl that love environment that much

Anyone else coming here after watching LEON’S video??
Here because of a video on Facebook
This gave me so much joy to see. Thanks for all you do
i love how theyve done a whole degree and now theyre paid to basically do the job of taking care of a pet fish
science is so funny i love it

Super cool! Well done. Really want to see an update.
fantastic video, its great what you are doing.
I need these kinds of lobster to do farming in my country, how can I ?
Thanks, hopefully this brings down the price of lobster at the restraunt lol. But its really cool what your doing.
actually farmed costs about a buck more per 1lb lobster than fishing alone for the same size lobster ... also most lobster farms have a loss rate of 40 to 60 percent ... because like the chicken farmers they over crowd the pens they are growing in
This is the best lobster hatchery ever in my life
This is so inspiring! I just hope the food you feed them is natural and what they would eat in nature and nothing else though. Keep up the good work!
thank you for all your efforts
Great work guys. I only wish that we could do such work here in Perth, Western Australia. Also how feasible would it be to farm these lobsters to full market maturity.....I can see that for the future this would be the only sustainable way.
They're eating size at 5-10 years old. They grow very slowly. It would really not be economical.

So what do the fishermen think of your project? Can they see an increase in the number of lobsters they harvest now ?
further to my recent post i am interested to know as to whether or not you release on the cornish south coast particularly Looe area ?
Is there any way I can get in on this cause I truly believe that lobsters replenishment into the seas will help the oceans with food in the future
When you think about it, you guys control a portion of their wages. Control a part of an ecosystem. You guys are in deep.
Where did you all learn how to do this on such a scale?
I think they have to do it because people are eating much more than before...
I TAUGHT THEM, YOU'RE WELCOME
you guys are doing god's work
Is this working? I’d love to see data
What if they just die from the shock of suddenly being dumped into the ocean

Wonderful work ❤️
What a beautiful project ❤
What type of water were they in, when you had them spinining around rapidly?salt or fresh and was it just acidic water ?
Salt. Acidic water would decompose their shells within hours if not minutes. Crustaceans can’t live in acidic waters.
Bravo. Great work.
Thanks for the work
Keep up the good works
Why not net off small potion of reef / beach vs going out far ?

How do they learn to find food if they have been with them in the beginning ?
They smell it
Lobsters don't learn anything.
This is probably the best way to get your hands on a blue lobster or albino one.
do you supply juvenile lobster throughout the coat of cornwall ?

what i want to know is what do you feed them when they are in first stage???
Well done!
How do you make money if you release them back to the sea?
Id love to do something like this!
1:24 the bands around the sciccors is bad. Why do you don‘t remove them and take a plier to catch them?!?
I believe the bands are to protect the other lobsters. I think they will eat each other.
So tiny and cute.
What did they give it to eat? The red thingy
very cool!

Taxes
This is an honorable endeavor. I need to do stuff with my life too. Maybe ill raise crabs
Don't get crabs, they're itchy! 😆
Thank you so much!
Can you create robots resembling their natural predators so the hatching can train their survival skills?
You can't teach a lobster anything, it's all instinct.

Amazing - I love God's creation.
Now let’s do the snow crabs
can we learn from you we are from poor country, we want to know this
Why don't you grow them just a little bit bigger? At the size you send them to sea, a fish would suck that up for lunch all day.
i have yet to see Chinese lobster cultivation/ hatchery in RUclips.. all i see are cooking preparations.. and yet they're among the biggest consumer of all sea creatures..
Bro they still look vulnerable when they release them why not grow them bigger
well. now i know that lobsters arent immortal.
Jacob Knowles brought me here
That's farming.
i wish have small farm lobsters in philippines hehe
All i see is cash swimming around i wanna breed lobsters and sell them
ANA do you see all that equipment they have?
Even with all that they're still not 100% successful. They still have to release them asap and get ones that have already bred in the wild.

Don't they have the urge to just take one and then cook it?
why dont you just farm a % of the lobsters to create more income so you can increase your operation?
Shh Winner it ruins the quality of lobster when they don’t hav free range and are isolated in a pen
Lobsters can take up to 8 years to reach adulthood. It would be a financial drain to farm them. Compare that to beef, which is much larger, yields way more meat, doesn't require all of this high tech machinery to raise, and is usually slaughtered between 12-22 months of age.
Why even bother eating seafood at all why are w we so selfish and greedy ?
The American lobster fishery doesn't need hatcheries you should take a lesson from them.
Pellets. Not good enough for food

Bagpipes/music made it very difficult to watch this. Shrill. Jarring.
I didn’t even realise they were playing until this comments , Yh they are jarring
Wont they die cuz they so used to fresh water then get released into salt water
They are hatched in salt water
why are their claws rubberbanded close? that's cruel. Are these mothers killed after they give birth?
They are returned to the sea, they said this
The claws are banded so they dont pinch
I do not agreec with the banding on the lobster claws. Especially for long term captivity. The claws can become damaged over a long period of time from lack of use.
Aren't they cannibals? I suppose they would need to be isolated then.
Its not for long term
I watched on silent and skipped the info he was giving because of that annoying music
I know you have all good meanings doing this but in my opinion humans most not interfer in nature proces.
Humans already interfering by catching for commercial. They are doing a wonderful job.
