I’m a 64 year old runner. According to Apple my max heart rate is 162. I always run with a Polar H10 chest strap and can easily reach to 180-185 and hold that for a certain amount of time without feeling that my legs are going to get sore or lactate is building up.
I’m 51. If I push myself as hard as I can at parkrun, my HR tops out at 192. I am absolutely sure that the 220-age rule is correct, and that I therefore have the body of a 28-year-old. 😉
You have to test it every 6 months I’m 59, performed testing on bike and treadmill over 3 days of testing in the lab and it was 183, But then hit 185 in the spin room several times a couple months later same chest strap and garment watch
A low tech solution is to wear a chest strap, then find a quarter mile section of road that is slightly uphill. Jog a couple miles to warm up then do 8 reps on the quarter mile at your 3k pace and the last one full out. Jog down to the start between quarter miles for your rest. That’ll get you close enough to your max for it to be useful for calculating training. If you’re not an avid runner you’ll probably hit your max before the 8th one
Pushing 50 here. I used to run at max HR very often, but that was 10 years ago. About 210 HR then. I am a bit paranoid about going at max these days. Coming back from long, long injuries and want to go at it again. But is it a danger to go at it like a mad man again?
I like the video, but… requiring a visit to a lab? Come on; there are ways to get a usable estimate of your max heart rate without going to a lab. I’ve done several myself.

So if you can’t afford to go to a lab, then how do you determine your true hr?

Thanks! Probbably, we could say that the fitter the lowest Resting HR... (excluding pathological issues, of course...)
