Loading it backwards is safer but increases the tongue weight. The controls on the machine also make a big difference. I just finished using a Wacker Neuson SM100 with a joy stick and if there is any movement whatsoever requiring you to move your hands, you may find the machine turning. Also good point about warming up the machine. I was loading frontwards and I was on the back. The dump trailer is rather high off the ground and the machine stalled on the pivot point. I had to jump off as the machine starting to fall back and the ramps I was using were also problematic.
I had to push the machine up from where I was standing and my wife depressed the safety switch on the platform. After starting it also had a brake on and so I had to take that off before I could move the machine perched on the ramp tilting back and forth. I did get it loaded, but not the experience I would like to repeat. So, make sure you have full control of the machine before loading and that it is fully warmed up. Going up too fast on a 6 X 10 trailer doesn't leave much room.
I have also used another type of machine on a landscape trailer with full ramp and that was much easier.
Experiences loading and unloading will be different depending on what bucket is on and your own weight, current fuel etc. I've used the Ditch Witch, Dingo and others too. Having two levers to control track movement would be better keeping the machine straight vs a joy (no joy loading) stick.
Also, tilting the dump is an option, but depending on material or ice, may be a problem too.
    Having jacks is a must.

Next time. Lift your dump bed about two feet and the ramp will be straight no jump when u cross from ramps to trailer. Even if you parked up or down. No pressure on the trailer or the truck.

I appreciate the concept but it's really not necessary. Plus with the bed tilted the dust from the gravel I haul would likely cause my tracks to slip. If I were in a steep situation I would definitely give it a try tho lol. Thank you for the advice Brother
