Great job by THE million dollar rhythm section, best in the business. Even though it was hard to hear Greg, he did a great job on this old classic. For my money, he's the 21st centuries best blues man. And as always, our friend and man on the spot James Sterling brought the world's best band right into our living rooms. I totally agree with you. It is hard to find such a brilliant rhythm section like Tuba Skinny have.
Jason's playing on this piece is a revelation, as Max's upright playing was a few weeks ago. Jason is fabulous, and he's completely idiomatic. Just when I thought that the three horns weren't even necessary, in they come. At this point, it's important to realize that TS isn't strictly a trad band. They're playing a string-based blues that isn't part of the trad repertoire. When Shaye, Barnabas and Craig come in, they have quite a task in front of them: how to match the perfection of what went before them and how to stitch together the string blues and horn traditions. It proves to be no problem at all. In this piece, listen especially to the wonderfully ingenious playing of Barnabas as he combines second-horn harmonies, traditional trombone support, and rhythmic invention behind Shaye and Craig. No one plays like Barnabas. And of course I always love Greg's singing. There is some amazing work in this video.

Many thanks, James. The little eight-bar tune is possibly the simplest piece of music in Tuba Skinny's massive repertoire. So it seems they deliberately chose to put it in the key of A to make it just a little more challenging! In the 1930s, Blind Boy Fuller recorded it in the 'easier' keys of A flat:

Tuba Skinny also slip in a 13-bar Chorus (yes - 13!) from Jason at 01:19 and again at 03:46, just as Blind Boy Fuller did. This shows how respectful Tuba Skinny are of the original recordings and how scrupulously they revive them. When Tuba Skinny recorded this song on their 'Owl Call Blues' CD in 2014, the vocalist was Erika; and they performed it in the key of G. Shaye was on violin for that recording and it was she who played the curious 13-bar Chorus.

Blind Boy Fuller’s guitar playing doesn’t owe anything to the Delta Blues style.
@@DovidM Good point, and I thought about making it in my response to Matthew Rhodes, since I like the Piemont styles even more than Delta blues. But his point that "this is a great hybrid sound" remains true, and it says something important about the way that TS approaches their sources and influences. And it's especially true since the Piedmont styles includes more than blues.

@James Sterling - How about some sort of directional or parabolic mic to record Greg's vocals? But then you'd have to mix it with your other audio. Just a thought...

I am using a separate PCM audio recorder and edit it into the video track. For these videos I positioned it under the steel barrier you see in front of the band in some shots, it was facing towards Shaye and Barnabus. To pick up the vocals I would have to position the mic in front of Greg to the detriment of the rest of the band or use two separate recorders and try to edit in two separate sound tracks. I'm afraid that is above my pay grade as a rank amateur! :>)
