Thanks for the encouragement in your videos; I repaired my first radio recently. Uniden 77-888 needed to be recapped and to be resoldered... Lots of broken solder joints
Glad that you showcased the 29Plus as it's not covered enough on RUclips. One of the most beautiful and cleanly designed mobiles ever made. Thanks for the tips on the edge board connector, which I'd seen before on your videos on another radio that I don't remember now, but didn't know it applied to this model. Seeing this made me less afraid to buy one. Now for a review of the Clear Channel AR 3500 which will hopefully remove my fears from that one!
I had a DNT 40 Channel 27/81 CB FM transceiver which I don't have any more because it got wrecked by a person who was a nasty piece of work but the transceiver had a VN66AF VMOS transistor as the final RF power device.
So, what is up then with others saying they use audio grade solder? I thought that was a load of snake oil. Just another reason to take ones money. I use good old 60/40 solder. I will get some with silver for contacts like the Cobra has. I have seen edge connections in other gear as well.
Hi Mike I just want to say this is the first time I’ve seen video since you got new camera and everything and I wanna tell you it looks and sounds GREAT!!! I watch every video you put out and I use to be a very avid CB ‘er and took industrial electronics at vo-tech after high school went on to work maintenance in a locomotive radiator factory. I’ve learned and remembered a lot watching you. And I wanna say Thank You !!! I’ve gathered and rescued lol several radios about 10 mobiles and 6 base radios I’ve not turned any on cause they prolly need re caped ? Where should I buy parts front cause I wanna at least recap them myself Again Thank you.
Any large reputable electronics parts supplier. Get from one of the big ones and you don't have to worry, they don't sell cheap Chinese caps. DigiKey, Newark, Allied, Mouser, etc...
I worked in a two-way radio shop and once and a while we would help someone out and fix a cb. Remember the Royce used to receive radio stations (FM broadcast) on around 22 or 23! Remember that or ever seen that??? Thanks
Hi Mike, I think I mentioned to you before I have been in the TV broadcast game for most of my life, and what you said about higher res camera's needing more light is spot on.........sadly the trade of for higher res pictures is lots more noise under low light conditions, so this new camera is going to cost you more light......the upside is we can all read the part numbers and see solder defects in your video's now.......what camera did you end up with by the way...... The other benefit is those of us that watch lots of video can turn the res down to 480 on RUclips and watch pretty good video still and up the res when needed etc.......its the old story about Sh&t in Sh&t out.....so your good pictures allow better down scaling to start with......and save heaps of Data costs.
The 29plus is one of my fav. AM CB units too. I have 3 of them, one is near mint. QUESTION: How can you disable the dang channel change beeps on the Cobra29 plus????
I have two of the cobra 29..23ch. one is in Ok condition. .second one is in perfect condition looks like brand new...I also have a johnson messenger 323.....23 channel. show room condition. .it's missing the 8 pin plug...for juice. .do you have any??. or can a cb shop convert to normal 3 pin plug....still have blue print for it..
Err.. I think its compression force that pushes down on the joints and breaks the bond between the pad, solder and component leg. Tensile (pulling up) tends to pull them together. Most people look for bad joints by pressing on the top of the component and looking underneath for a moving lead. Bad joints show a downward solder separation typical of a compression fracture. A tensile break would look more like a dimple. You can compress component leads but as component leads are under tension during manufacture they are already near their upper tensile elastic limit.
It's the transmitter. I discovered if I unplug the microphone from the transmitter there is still a reading on the audio db scale on the camera. Tap the transmitter module and it pegs the db scale. I sent it back to Shure under warranty.
I like that style Cobra 29 Plus. That is a cool looking radio.
I love the 2166 driving the 2078 and or.2075 ..they work fine
I am not a fan of Cobra Radios, but I like that one. Really 80's looking.
Love the royce ❤️ radios
I can see what looks like a cracked joint at 14:00, just to the left of centre, the row of four, 2nd from the left.

Great tips on soldering Mike. Nice old radios too.
Excellent info thanks
Is that a mitsubishi logo on the back of board on the royce? ??
I have a cobra 29 plus that need to be fix
Nice old school gear Mike. I never knew the Cobra 29 had that long of a run with different models. It is still very popular today
Original is a turn dial 23.channle crystal.. but great radio ...now these both are good radios...

Great stuff Mike. Thanks for sharing. Thumbs up.

Some use 2166 driver 2075 cross
Some use 2166 on both stages

29 plus is my all time favorite am rig. Only problem I've encountered is they (probably all + series) were PRONE to cap failures......
I love the "plus" cobra radios 💞💞

i can see where the uk got the Amstrad 900/901 and the mustang 1000.FM Radios boards
from
Both transformer regulation
What is all the extra empty space on the right side of the Royce for?
Different radios that used larger circuit boards.

Thanks Obi-Wan.
2% silver is the best. Ive been using that for years.... No oil and mirrors here
Mike I have to ask . Have you ever done a Samdo CB?
Still lots oh hiss on your audio. Turn on Dolby noise reduction. 😃
