In Raindows is my favorite album of all time. It's a work of art. Everything after Creep was progressively better and deeper. They're huge worldwide too.
I'm not a fan of Radiohead's other stuff, but after hearing Reckoner (only because I heard it was inspired by John Frusciante) I listened to In Rainbows and I think it's a phenomenal album. Probably up there with some of my favourite albums.
i agree, i think they just keep getting better and tasteful. TKOL was more like an EP and maybe not great, but Moon Shaped Pool is incredible. I don't know why everyone always says to listen to OK Computer first. Maybe that used to be true but In Rainbows is now the best gateway drug.

One of the band - Jonny Greenwood - was named one of the greatest guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone mag and scored films like There Will Be Blood. The band also wrote a Bond theme but it got dropped. Glad you're enjoying their music - I grew up with it and they're still one of my favourite bands. There is a real progression to their material, and they took some artistic left-turns, but they are truly the best group of their generation in my opinion. Check out anything from OK Computer, Kid A, In Rainbows or A Moon Shaped Pool. Also, Fake Plastic Trees, High and Dry, and Street Spirit are great tracks from their second album The Bends.
I was just like you and thought they were the creep one hit wonder guys and didn’t think anything of them but one day I came across an awesome song played at the end of an episode of a tv show I was watching and had to find out who it was and I was surprised to find out that it was Radiohead so I decided to give them a shot and listen to their music and it was one of the best things I’ve ever done in my life. I think the reason their not really that mainstream outside of creep is because they don’t advertise themselves as well as other bands like Coldplay and it also doesn’t help that the mainstream media snubbed their music early as being ‘depressive’. If you want a good starting point I’d go with their 3 most popular albums ok computer, kid a and in rainbows the one your reacting too now, but tbf all their albums are great and unique apart from pablo honey :)

So... post Creep, their next biggest commercial song would've been Paranoid Android. Around that time they also had "Rabbit in the Headlights" (which was an UNKLE song) or "Karma Police". Their biggest deterrent (and strength) is that post-Creep, they went pretty left-field. They didn't want to be commercial, per se, but they made great music. They never went away it's just that not everyone caught what they were putting down. I think In Rainbows is their most accessible album. It's super good, but also good in the sense that most people can digest it.
I'm always pleased to see a reaction to radiohead. I know you are headed to a world of amazing songs. This band is huge world wide, critically adored. I think American media crawled up its own ass.
After Pablo Honey, Radiohead dropped The Bends, which had several commercially successful tracks (My Iron Lung was in the movie “Clueless,” that’s as commercial as it gets!). Had they continued making albums in that style they would’ve been Coldplay at best, Bush at worst, but you would’ve heard their music a lot more on the radio. Instead, they put out OK Computer (my favorite album of all time, any genre), Kid A, and Amnesiac, all of which were drastic left turns away from commercially marketable, traditional albums. These dudes do what they WANT, not what they’re TOLD, and I think they’re music reflects that. Great video, you have a wonderful ear and your commentary was good as well 🤘

They had karma police, fake plastic trees, paranoid android, no alarms and knives out in music video rotation from what I remember . Can’t speak to local radio stations playing them. But I was lucky enough to follow them their whole career and catch them live before the pandemic.

I don’t cry in front of anyone, ever. Its a thing. I have to be alone, and I’m human so I have to get it out at some point, and its often through beautiful music that I can. This track is one of my go to’s. Its lovely, feels angelic and haunting at the same time. The vocal harmonies, the way they layer Thom’s voice in the album version, its magical.
This goes for any reaction channels. You could basically exist and live off just reacting to great Radiohead songs that would last you like 2 years worth of contents. I'm surprised there isn't a dedicated channel on youtube that is of someone just reacting to Radiohead songs only and just being absolutely floored by what they are hearing. Also, it isn't just Radiohead, there are Radiohead spin offs like Thom Yorke solo albums and Jonny Greenwood solo album and Phil Selway solo album and Ed O Brien solo album and then there is Atoms for Peace and The Smile and Thom Yorke colloaborations with other artist. There are so many great stuff beyond just Creep.

So psyched you are diving into Radiohead. I wrote way-too-long comment (this is too long but getting a little better) on your "Weird Fishes" reaction to give some background and explain how a lot of music lovers missed out on their path as a band through to today. Just look up "Ok Computer" and Kid A" and see the accolades they have - it will blow your mind even further as to how one could miss out on them, but it is easy to understand, again, as they don't cater to the industry and they put out what they want. "In Rainbows" is also famous for being released in digital format in an industry-first - it was for free or pay what you want. Many others have since copied this idea (I don't man that in a negative way). They're also unique in that each album evolves - they always strive to come up with a new aura for their sound. So from pure Alt/Rock roots, "Creep" then their second - one of the great 2nd album leaps in history - "The Bends" both rock heavy though starting to add atmospheric elements, they gradually add electronica elements, kraut-rock (rhythm based music) and then can go very experimental but even when they do the songs themselves remain first rate. How/why are they so huge and great? Again, all 5 guys have managed to stay together and mostly happy for all 36 years unchanged, so their tightness as players, writers, and lack of caring about who get's any spotlight, has led to this 9 album longevity. Their lead guitarist and multi-instrumentalist supreme, Jonny Greenwood, is the "it" guy in the world of movie scores. Aide from being a beast on a Fender Telecaster he has been nominated for an Academy Award for his orchestral work and is director Paul Thomas Anderson's go-to soundtrack composer. If you ever saw "There Will Be Blood" the music is a major part of why that film is considered a masterpiece of the 21st century. And Thom Yorke, vocalist - songwriter - rhythm guitar and piano - is one of the musical genius minds on the planet. Between those 2 alone, their ability to craft such amazing music is more understandable. As for live suggestions, nothing tops "In Rainbows: Live from the Basement." Just them in a studio but it shows why they are considered one of the great live bands around but also is amazing to watch and super cool to get to know the band, as well as see how they make these otherworldly songs and play them even better live. So far the 3 or 4 people who have done that full set have been able to do so with no issue from the powers that be. As you continue to absorb "In Rainbows" an awesome side step would be "Paranoid Android: Live on Jools Holland." Great vid, thanks man! I got into Radiohead when KidA came out. I was living in Tokyo for the year and the beauty and dystopian vibe helped me calmly deal with the craziness of an hour long morning commute on the overpacked trains. I am always glad to see more people enjoy the genius of Radiohead.
Radiohead are big amongst musicians I find. Most I know are into them to some degree, whereas Joe public haven't been exposed beyond Creep and maybe Paranoid Android or Karma Police. The fact is Radiohead are still together and are still experimenting. As such, their sound has evolved through multiple albums. A fact musicians generally appreciate more than the average listener maybe....
Spot on. They're mostly for the musically inclined - or people willing to take risks (so music nerds too - not just musicians). Most of whatever casual audience they had tapped out after OK Computer. There are some musical but super-hipster contrarians who don't listen to Radiohead because they're turned off by any hyped up or universally/critically acclaimed bands. But forgetting edgy people, I can understand why the mainstream wouldn't enjoy most Radiohead - because it's not social, amping, happy, or party music you just casually put on after work right? For me it's more like sitting down and watching an arthouse film - you pay attention, get enveloped, confront the feelings provided and maybe make sense of any statements being made. Sonically too, Radiohead become more interesting once you give time to unpick all the sounds, layers and arrangements. You realise it's not so random and everything becomes purposeful even in the stranger songs. Thom Yorke and his willingness to expose his inner anxieties and humanity to the world is a total gift as well (+ that voice). If I'm out in the yard enjoying the sun and having a few beers with mates, I'm not going to put Kid A on. Or maybe not any Radiohead at all unless it's part of a mix. As always, context is the key!

Don't be fooled, Radiohead has had huge success in the eastern side of the world. But Creep definietly stunted their reach here. It was such a great song that no one could look past it. Kid A reached number one on Billboard when it debuted in 2000, without any singles and being available to stream for free on their website. Released In Rainbows on their own site and allowed you to pay what you wanted (including $0.00), while also turning the entire industry digital AND inventing the album drop. Most influential musical act of the past half century, and possibly longer. A true singularity in music.

Radiohead was never commercially popular because they didn’t lend their music out as much as many other popular bands in their heyday. The massive following they have are people who found them and just love the music. Definitely check out more of them. Similar to my first time hearing Reckoner. A fun fact, on Best Ever Albums, 2 of Radiohead Albums appear on Top 10, and 4 on Top 20. That says a lot about how the Audiophiles really like Radiohead.

Love this too man.. I feel it's like ten minutes too short! You gotta listen to the "In Rainbows" album, particularly the "from the basement" session which are live in studio recordings and you can see them play it's just awesome. I could recommend you soooooo many Radiohead songs from different albums, but this is something you'll find out for yourself. Listen to "Weird Fishes/Arpeggi", then "Just", "There There ", or "the National Anthem" to get an idea of their range. Also, the Daily Mail (from the basement) is awesome. Man there's just too many.. "In Rainbows" was released online, in a big f*ck you to the music industry, and you could decide for yourself what to pay for it.

Back around 1997-2001 they were kinda popular in record stores and obviously overseas. But I discovered the album the bends, and it was over from there. They had that song In Romeo and juliet, talk show host, the song in vanilla sky and a bunch more. Thkse are the 2 that hooked me. Ok computer they took off.

Don't be fooled, Radiohead has had huge success in the eastern side of the world. But Creep definietly stunted their reach here. It was such a great song that no one could look past it. And that was off their first freaking album. They are seriously all amazing, every album is different. Csnt wait to get my Kid A Mnesia record!!

Released In Rainbows on their own site and allowed you to pay what you wanted (including $0.00), while also turning the entire industry digital AND inventing the album drop. Most influential musical act of the past half century, and possibly longer. A true singularity in music.
In rainbows in the basement concert is beautiful. How to disappear completely is hypnotic and would be a great song for you to listen to. Subscribing because I want to watch your Radiohead journey.

Radiohead was never commercially popular because they didn’t lend their music out as much as many other popular bands in their heyday. The massive following they have are people who found them and just love the music. Definitely check out more of them. A few suggestions would be “There, There” “Jigsaw falling into place” “The daily mail”

Similar to my first time hearing Reckoner. A fun fact, on Best Ever Albums, 2 of Radiohead Albums appear on Top 10, and 4 on Top 20. That says a lot about how the Audiophiles really like Radiohead.
One of my personal favorites is "How to Disappear Completely" by Radiohead. One of the best bands of all time in my opinion.

You gotta listen to the "In Rainbows" album, particularly the "from the basement" session which are live in studio recordings and you can see them play it's just awesome.
I could recommend you soooooo many Radiohead songs from different albums, but this is something you'll find out for yourself.
Listen to "Weird Fishes/Arpeggi", then "Just", "There There ", or "the National Anthem" to get an idea of their range.
Also, the Daily Mail (from the basement) is awesome.

Their album ok computer is considered one of the greatest albums of all time, went platinum plenty of times, KID A was one of the most groundbreaking albums of the 2000s because it introduced electronic into rock music which inspired many hip hop artist and both guitarist are in the rolling stone top 100 greatest guitarist of all time and the drummer is in the top 100 drummers and the bassist is in the top 100 bassist category
Just crash and bang your way through their music.....hate, love and adore their songs.....its a very personal experience listening to this band...they are a veritable panacea of subjectivity and relative thought....what you like i dont etc........ENJOY and I envy you!

Back around 1997-2001 they were kinda popular in record stores and obviously overseas. But I discovered the album the bends, and it was over from there. They had that song In Romeo and juliet, talk show host, the song in vanilla sky and a bunch more. Thkse are the 2 that hooked me. Ok computer they took off.

I had to pause this video to leave a comment before it ended..you must listen to the albums OK Computer and Kid A in their entirety at some point in your life. They are classics. Still hold up today, especially Kid A which was ahead of it's time. Enjoy!
