Few days ago i find out that my goldfish Oscar develop dropsy , his scale was sticking out , he was bloated , but he still was eating so that was good sign , but he was starting hiding behind the decorations. I was searching on you tube for some information and i did find this video with the information on dropsy. I did already have a Metro meds at home from goldfish connection , i did buy the kanaplex , i follow the instruction from this video, and today its the third day of the treatment and my Oscar its feeling better , his scale don't sticking out as much his swelling is gone and his active and happy, he is such a good fishy, i will be hurt if i loose him. I am so thankful for this video.
All, I would like to inform you that following this procedure really does work! One of my Ranchu goldfish had dropsy and following this method did cure her. I had the ranchu in a hospital tank with the temp raised to 82, added the recommended dose of epsom salt, medicated with KanaPlex, and fed her Metro Meds and she is back to normal now! Thank you so much for posting this helpful video!
I wanted to thanks you since last year but only got around getting a youtube account now. Our gold fish "Poke" got dropsy, thanks to your advises and video I managed to save him. I followed nearly every step as being in UK I didn't have the same supplies but Poke survived the disease and lived another year. he sadly passed away today, I think from unnoticed constipation. But as I said THANK YOU so much for your advices they are literally life saving.
I wanted to thank you for this video and extensive documentation. Our little guy was almost gone (we were looking up ways to humanely euthanize him); he was lying on his side on the bottom of the tank, unable to swim, bloated and beginning to bleed internally. We began aggressive treatment and he is much better! He is upright, bloating and bleeding has stopped, and he is eating voraciously! We will finish his course of treatment but are optimistic that soon enough, he will be able to rejoin his tankmates. Thank you so much for your help.
+Michelle Coe I hope he continues to get better. Before you return him back to the main tank -- rinse your filter media to remove/unclog organic buildup (do this every other water change). A dirty filter becomes a haven for pathogens that can cause dropsy. Remove any substrate in the tank; bare-bottom is better for goldfish. Change at least 80% of your water weekly to maintain water quality.
My 7 yrs old karasu koi just died of dropsy on me couple hours ago, wish I watched this earlier. RIP Anthony, I'll always remember how she would swim over to my direction on sight and let me hold her in the palm of my hand, she liked to suck my fingers dry too :(
Thank You for answering my emails. Your advices and help saved the coolest goldfish ever! He was just as pine conned if not more than yours in the video. Thanks again!!!! You Rock!
Aquarium Salt draws in more fluid to the body and will exacerbate the swelling. Act soon - do a 100% water change and get him on Epsom salt. Hope you can expedite the meds. Good luck.
Thank you very much for the detailed instruction on the treatment/materials. Our goldfish has been having dropsy for about a month now; we can see it in her scale and she hasn't been eating at all. Thankfully, no fin rot yet. We started the treatment with Kanaplex about a week ago and we have been feeding the medicated fish food (Hex Shield). We also use epsom salt (instead of the regular aquarium salt) and kent garlic extract. Is it normal that he still is not eating after a week? Also, how often should we change the water?
Watch the video and read the video descriptions. It already tells you what to do and what meds to buy. Act fast. Don't wait. And PLEASE remove your pleco/algae eater in the tank. They suck the protective slimecoating of your goldfish specially at night when its dark. They produce more waste than goldfish and they are parasite carriers.
@toushida I don't own a betta - all I can advise for loss of appetite is try feeding with Live Baby Brine Shrimp. As for the lesions/fin rot, treat with a broad spectrum antibiotic. Check your water parameters - this could be ammonia burn.
Thank you for making this video! I honestly didn't know that using aquarium salt with my betta was making him worse. I've switched him over to the epsom salt now, hopefully he will at least feel better even if he doesn't make it.
@zipperhead53 Sounds great! The epsom salt is effective in removing excess fluid in swollen tissues. Maracyn Two which contains Minocycline is a gram positive treatment and may have addressed what is ailing your fish. Just remember that 95% of infections are gram negative. This is why Kanamycin is specific to dropsy. I hope your betta keeps improving. Good luck!
Thanks, I will follow your advice, glad you were able to heal your fish, its so sad to see them so sick.... he just looks at me with his little eyes, helpless, so weak, its really heartbreaking.
you are lucky dude. im not sure what happened but my goldfish got very, very sick and after a whole week, he died the day exactly a week after it was noticed. his name was Goldie. God Bless Goldie.
Hi, thanks for the great video. Our black moor has dropsy and we've been treating him with Kanaplex and we got the heater and raised the temp yesterday. The kanaplex says 1 dose every 2 days for a total of 3 doses. Is this how you used it? Thanks Steve
I've had a lot of dropsy in the past, and so it kills me to see my favorite coming to after my tank has been super healthy for a year! I hope it all works out for him.
@Steppen03 I agree, Rick's Medi-Gold and Metro-Meds antibiotic food are lifesavers! I learned from my mistakes when I started fishkeeping years back. I quarantine all new incoming fish for 2-3 weeks before integrating them with the rest.
Sorry to hear that. You mentioned in your video that you only just got the albino rainbow shark. It could've been suffering an internal bacterial infection prior to purchase. Scales stick out when the tissues are inflamed and sometimes a little late for treatment :( Dropsy is almost always a Nitrate+water quality issue. Hope the rest of your collection is in better shape and thanks for stopping by.
@Tanrez2 Yes, you need to treat your sick goldfish in a separate tank (at least 10gallons). While waiting for the medication you will order, setup a hospital tank with a heater, air pump, & epsom salt. If you have any other questions, send a private message. Thanks.
@0000Destiny0000 A bulging eye can be a mechanical injury or a bacterial infection that can cause fluid buildup in the eye area and can also be a symptom of dropsy. Fish PIPING at the surface is a sign of oxygen deprivation. So I advise to aerate the water when raising temp. When there is oxygen oversaturation, fluid bubbles form under the scales & I never fail to mention that in the inquiries that I get. Just trying to help. Cheers.
Hi Steve. Yes, 1 dose every 48hrs - after a water change. 3 doses is your minimum. When using antibiotics, full course treatment is normally 7-10 days. If you use this in combination with Oxolinic Acid Powder then you must dose every 36hrs after a water change. Also, don't forget the EPSOM SALT. This is very important. Epsom salt will help reduce the swelling. Replenish salt every water change. Hope your fish gets well soon!
Correct: 1 dose for 10g tank is 2 level scoops of Kanaplex. I've realized over the last few years that having Kanamycin & Oxolinic Acid Powder (Crystal Clear WipeOut) in the fish medicine cabinet is critical. It's my go-to antibiotic combo for a multitude of bacterial infections: septicemia, lesions, etc. I suggest in future that you invest on bulk stock. Angelsplus//com carries the 100gram Kanamycin Sulfate for $69 - it a more concentrated version than the Kanaplex brand.1/4 tsp treats 20g.
@Amerio2007 Aww.. sorry to hear that but I'm glad he had a good 7yrs. Sometimes we do our best then something bad still happens. I've lost 5 of my best goldfish to dropsy and I was really devastated. Hope this vid helps you and others when the time comes.
Hi! Thanks for this, I'm going to be trying my best to treat my favoritest of goldfish. He usually is super active but the today I saw him sitting in the corner and I knew something was wrong. He is Dropsying now, so I have him in epsom salts, and I'm going on a trip to find some meds. Unfortunately antibiotics and especially antibiotic food is really hard to come by here in Canada. I just hope I can save him! I've been reading a lot of conflicting info on epsom salts, this amount seems small?
Hi great video, i have some anti bacteria and fungus treatment, not sure if its internal of external and going to get some epsom asap, my betta has raised scales but before that he was and still now hugley constipated, he is quite bloated also, is this dropsy or uneaten food causing him to bloat? what td o you recommend doing? thanks.
@bluuraydisc Forgot to mention a laxative bath remedy used by Japanese Ranchu Breeders for swim bladder disease: 1g PURE cocoa powder unsweetened to 10L dechlorinated water (or 1tsp to 30L) strictly for 2-3days. I heard its effective & might actually try this. You can search youtube for the video "転覆病の金魚 ココア浴中". They do this 1x month as preventive.
Do a complete waterchange asap and dissolve epsom salt to bring down swelling. Follow all instructions on the video description. Good thing you caught it early since he is still eating. Please try and obtain MetroMed and Kanaplex. Send me a PM anytime if you have any questions.
@Tanrez2 You only started medication 3 days ago. Medicating for dropsy takes 2 - 4 weeks. Make sure you are feeding your fish antibiotic food - this should take care of all other bacterial symptoms. For any red lesions, add oxolinic acid powder into the tank (CrystalClear WipeOut Bacterial Control or Oxolium Powder)
Art, I hope its not too late for your fish. It tends to get confusing when there's conflicting information all over the web. But when you're treating for dropsy - you need to raise the temp to prevent buildup of aeromonas bacteria. Warm water holds less dissolved O2 in the tank so you would need to AERATE. Get the meds and epsom asap. Good luck.
@huntawunta continue>> But on the 8th week, one of the fish started to get the "Hole in the head" and another come down with "Dropsy." It just drives me NUTS! However, not all fishes are sick, 5 out of 15 fish. And if I discover the disease a little too late, then the fish dies. It drives me crazy to think about why this even occur in the first place if I have quarantine them properly or by the rules... I've used QuikCure (formalin), Prazi, Metro-Meds/Medi-Gold.
what about aeration for betta, will it stress out sick betta? I heard that moving water stresses them out, maybe better to avoid it and try everything else except the air stone.
Sorry this reply took awhile -- got tied up at work. If you can't get the meds, at least try the epsom salt, heater and make sure the fish has adequate aeration.
Great tutorial! I don't have a goldfish of my own, but maybe when I grow older I will get one, since they're easy to mantain and are really cute IMO. My family and I used to have goldfish but they died for other reasons (I think it was the white spot disease) and we didn't know what to do. BTW, how is your goldfish Mochi doing? Is it healthy now? :)
am glad your goldfish is doing great , i use epsom salt also when treating a goldfish with dropsy and metro med pelllets and sometimes i use maracyn , i was succeful with 2 goldfish a ranchu and a wakin , the wakin dies 8 months later i think i over feed him and that make the dropsy attack again
did you add the epsom salts everyday??? also, my fish wont eat the metro med and it dissociates in the water, how often should i change it? or should i let the fish just 'breathe' in the food?
Great Vid! I myself lost many prize goldfish to dropsy before I found out about Rick's Medi-Gold & Metro-Meds. They always get sick when I introduce new fish to my old fish - at the time I didn't know anything about "different bacterias can't be mixed." Have you successful add new fishes to your existing old fishes that you had for a long time ?
Try and make him comfortable. Isolate in a tub or separate tank with fresh dechlorinated water, dissolve epsom salts to bring down the swelling (this will reduce his pain) and install an airstone+airpump.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO! oMGOSH! i just changed the tank last night and added aquarium salt. I did my research this morning and found your video just now. I'm going go buy epsom salt 2morrow! I'm not sure if my goldfish of four years had dropsy, but it started to stop eating since today. One of its eye is swollen and cloudy and i just noticed that the under rim of its eye is swollen and red (looks kinda bloody). I'm going to try that 2morrow !
You'll be doing upto 100% water changes on the QT every 36 hours - very impt while treating sick fish. Cycling this tank to is moot, therefore you shouldn't worry about ammonia or nitrite levels. It's a temporary holding tank until your sick fish gets better. Once he is healed you can return him to the main tank where nitrification is already in progress.
TYVM for useful video! Watch closely the condition of Mochi, because the Dropsy may soon return! I also managed to remove the symptoms, but disease often return :(
i just realized I used only 1 scoop of kanaplex for 10 gallon, that was about a week ago when I finished the kanaplex treatment, the fish is still alive and I am still changing the water using epsom salts- since I halved the dosage of the medicine, do you think I should repeat the kanaplex treatment? She still sits mostly at the bottom of the tank; I noticed she seems better when she has good lighting all day. She still also doesn't seem to want to eat so I force fed her the anti-bact. gel.
My betta is now quarantined, heater filter, got some supa tonic salts and treating with anti bacteria and fungus, feeding him daily with peas because he's constapated badly and his scales are petruding, how often should I do water changes, 1 per day or 1 every 2 days or once a week? If he dies or lives, ithe video still going to help me with dropsy in the future and now , thanks, just hope he gets better.
My Oranda Lion head (4yrs. old) seems to have the 1st signs of dropsy. I tried pees 2 times and he is not constipated. No pine cone at present, but very bloated and swimming funny. I have a heater, Epsom salt, air stone & KanaPlex. Just did a 75% water change and added the heater and air stone. Should I wait to add the Epsom salt and KanaPlex until 80F? Or should I do it now? These changes make him happier and actually comes to look out the front of the tank instead of at the top corner all day
My red capped oranda whitey might have this he is acting normally eating and always coming up to see me but i knowticed if i looked at him a certain way is scales look slightly raised you could say not pointing out off the body but sort of you can just see the edges i have no idea what to do i have already lost my first fish (betta fish) to hole in the head diesease , and my two other oranda's redeye and nubs to dropsy i believe i dont want to lose whity too
@urabnetwork Don't give up yet if she's fighting to stay alive all this time. Remove her from the tank while you change old water with fresh dechlorinated water and follow all instructions in the video description. First mode of treatment if you don't have the meds yet > Epsom salt+heat+aeration.
Hello hakunamata my little baby betta has developed dropsy I believe 2 days ago her one eye started bulging and her scales started raising a little I've been using maracyn one and two just til I find something else and then I found this...I hope it's not to late to cure her I really love her and feel bad she's just a baby I don't know how she developed it ..but anyway where do I purchase my Epsom salt? Does it matter the brand?? I can't seem to find the one on your video an also about the kanap
Thank you for your comment & for disliking my video. Goldfish are TEMPERATE Fish. This means they can tolerate temperatures ranging from mid50F to 85F. Pathogens thrive in COOLER water. Higher temperatures prevents bacterial buildup & most parasites won't survive temps above 80F. Warm water doesn't cause dropsy per se. Dropsy is caused by many factors: internal bacterial infections caused by high nitrates, low saturated oxygen levels, toxic metals in the water, etc.
Thanks. i'm very worry about my fish its been a week swellon.Or upsidedown position can't move his body since his large stomach bother him.Is there any chances Will cure his symptoms? I have 4 gold fish and one janitor. My other fish recently died so I'm worry about my fish
my gold fish used to follow me back a fourth my room he started turning over one day the I seen a tiny gray spot the next day well today I just watched your vid and I kept the heat up an the water clean with pleanty off oxygen unfortunately I just spent the night catering for my fish because I could see he was in a little pain so I let him go I try everthing. RIP _-_ /BOBO/ 12:18 AM GB TIME. MISS U ALLREADY
Hi, just came across your video I am going to try this treatment on my betta. I'd given him 3 doses of Kanaplex already (1 spoon every other day for 3 days, which is what the package instructed). Should I give one more round (3 more spoonfuls, each 2 days apart) so he's treated for the minimum 10 days?
Thanks for the reply. I did read the description and watched the video closely. Just wanted to make sure that by 3 doses you meant 3 spoonfuls (which takes 6 days, according to the Kanaplex instructions). If I'm calculating right, I can give 2 more spoonfuls which lasts 4 more days. I've ordered the Metro-Med, hope it helps. Thanks for posting this.
Thank you . Thank you .Thank you. Very valuable information. I have lost my most precious ryukin by using all kinds of unknown drugs. Can't thank you enough.
@huntawunta Wow... Only 2-3 weeks ? I have to quarantine my fishes for 8 weeks! Example: I brought my 15 fishes from 1 breeder at the same time and put them in my large pond. The fishes are from different areas at the breeder's place (different varieties). My pond is exposed to the sun for few hours a day. I treated them for 4 weeks and they are all healthy and energetic. And so I stopped the treatment. --- continue >>
Did you mean you treated with Kanamycin+Oxolinic Acid+Epsom Salt+MetroMeds+High Heat+Aeration? In most cases Dropsy can take a few weeks to heal. Maracyn contains Erythromycin - which is used to treat gram POSITIVE infections. Dropsy is caused by gram NEGATIVE bacteria. You need to continue with Kanamycin + Oxolinic. And now you have to add Metronidazole to treat the head infection (Ok to combine all 3 meds). Kanamycin will help w/ the internal inflammation, Oxolinic will heal the hemorrhaging.
Really sad because my most beloved goldfish died today.. especially sad because it's the goldfish I have raised for the longest time... I don't think it is because of dropsy or ammonia, and I think it was a swim bladder problem.. does Epsom salt work for that too? And does crushing up pellet food also help with their digestion? I would like some help, maybe some advice for the next time this happens. I am overwhelmed with sadness right now.. ;(
My goldfish has dropsy but still has his appetite and is not lethargic, he has bulging bubbly eyes and bubbled scales, he is a pearl scale btw, do you think he may stand a chance he don't look to swelled up PLEASE HELP
Dang, wish I came across this video earlier. I think my goldie died from dropsy. It was pine coning and its eyes were swollen so I cleaned the tank and fed it less and it was doing much better. Next thing you know I get ready to leave the house and its dead.
@ferzy1111 Epsom salt should be available in any drugstore - at least treat him with that so that the fluid buildup goes down. When his body swells, it is painful so at least try to alleviate that pain if you can with the epsom salts. Find any anti-bacterial medication for your fish ... don't give up. I really hope you won't let him die :(
looks like my my best friend has dropsy. I have to help him. I cant let him die. I have to help him, so give me some good ideas to get him better, PLEASE! he was the first friend i made when i moved from ILL to CA. and we are low on money, so we dont have much to buy for him. He would do a little dance when i feed him. oh im going to miss him. get better happy!
Please read video description (under the video window) gives you details where to source meds. Or you can google it. Epsom does NOT cause fluid retention. If she is even more swollen - has nothing to do with epsom - just means internal tissues are inflamed and gotten worse from ongoing dropsy infection. NEVER overdose. Remember: Mistakes happen when we're in a HURRY. If you insist on Maracyn that is your choice. I do not advise it.
@4dEgrEE Swollen, cloudy eyes & inflammation: for these symptoms Nitrofurazone (Binox or BiFuran) is the antibiotic of choice. This combines well with Kanamycin Sulfate. Nitrofurazone does not inhibit nitrifying bacteria, so fish may be treated in the display tank if this is the only fish you have. Otherwise, isolate your fish + raise the temp. For best results, feed with Medi-gold from goldfishconnection. Any other questions, send me a private message.
Followed the directions and now my ranchu is back in his community tank and as happy as can be. Thank you so much for your help!

@Eggys0 yes, dropsy is painful disease for fish :( when their body gets swollen and distended all the organs are compressed and inflamed.

@Matteblackful Really sorry to hear your betta died from dropsy. I completely understand how you feel.
Good luck.
I remember when chloramphenicol was available. That worked well on dropsy and most anything else.
:) Hope everything works out. The key to keeping your fish healthy is frequent large water changes (80-90% wk), don't overfeed, don't overcrowd.
I've used QuikCure (formalin), Prazi, Metro-Meds/Medi-Gold.
thank you, did you buy the baby brine on ebay or find them at a local pet shop?
no i was talking about a different albino rainbow shark that i had 5 years ago when i was 8. the sharks i just got recently are fine.
what about aeration for betta, will it stress out sick betta?
Hope your fish gets well soon.
am glad your goldfish is doing great , i use epsom salt also when treating a goldfish with dropsy and metro med pelllets and sometimes i use maracyn , i was succeful with 2 goldfish a ranchu and a wakin , the wakin dies 8 months later i think i over feed him and that make the dropsy attack again
did you add the epsom salts everyday??? also, my fish wont eat the metro med and it dissociates in the water, how often should i change it? or should i let the fish just 'breathe' in the food?
Really glad he's doing better :)
BTW, where did you bought Keneplex?
Thanks for watching! I see you have the same gang of pets: dog+cat+fish :) From an animal lover to another ~ HAPPY PETKEEPING!
TYVM for useful video! Watch closely the condition of Mochi, because the Dropsy may soon return! I also managed to remove the symptoms, but disease often return
:(
i just realized I used only 1 scoop of kanaplex for 10 gallon, that was about a week ago when I finished the kanaplex treatment, the fish is still alive and I am still changing the water using epsom salts- since I halved the dosage of the medicine, do you think I should repeat the kanaplex treatment?
These changes make him happier and actually comes to look out the front of the tank instead of at the top corner all day
I wish that I would have found this video sooner. My goldfish just died from dropsy and I didn't know how to treat it until he was so far gone.
Excellent video--thank you for sharing your experience!
Thanks Rob :)

My red capped oranda whitey might have this he is acting normally eating and always coming up to see me but i knowticed if i looked at him a certain way is scales look slightly raised you could say not pointing out off the body but sort of you can just see the edges i have no idea what to do i have already lost my first fish (betta fish) to hole in the head diesease , and my two other oranda's redeye and nubs to dropsy i believe i dont want to lose whity too
How often do you add epsom salt ? Just put him in tank by himelf and adding salt now .
Every water change.
Thank You !
@urabnetwork Don't give up yet if she's fighting to stay alive all this time. Remove her from the tank while you change old water with fresh dechlorinated water and follow all instructions in the video description. First mode of treatment if you don't have the meds yet > Epsom salt+heat+aeration.
Really sorry about Gary :( Good luck with future fish.
@theeReddVision Thank you!
Did they pull it out of the market?
Thank you for your comment & for disliking my video. Goldfish are TEMPERATE Fish. This means they can tolerate temperatures ranging from mid50F to 85F. Pathogens thrive in COOLER water. Higher temperatures prevents bacterial buildup & most parasites won't survive temps above 80F. Warm water doesn't cause dropsy per se. Dropsy is caused by many factors: internal bacterial infections caused by high nitrates, low saturated oxygen levels, toxic metals in the water, etc.
So glad your oranda is better :) All I want is to help.
i had an albino rainbow shark in my old 20 gallon fish tank and it had its scales sticking out. it died the next day.
Thanks. i'm very worry about my fish its been a week swellon.Or upsidedown position can't move his body since his large stomach bother him.Is there any chances Will cure his symptoms?
Maximum treatment is upto 10 days when using antibiotics. Please take a moment to read the video description -- it's all there.
@Steppen03 Thanks, Steppen! I also liked your videos :) Happy fishkeeping!
Does this work for bettas too? My betta is showing signs of Dropsy. Please respond it is urgent!!
I am overwhelmed with sadness right now.. ;(
HELP.My goldfish is all swelled up and has blister looking things on his body like the scales are coming off😢😮. Anybody know the solution.
@shen101101 Thanks for sharing your good news and congratulations on saving your ranchu's life :)
I really hope you won't let him die :(
Thank you!
looks like my my best friend has dropsy.
