Satyajit Ray, an Indian filmmaker and one of the dozen or greatest masters of world cinema, is recognized for his humanistic approach to filmmaking. Ray, a true auteur, exercised direct control over many aspects of filmmaking. He was born on May 2, 1921, into an Artistic family in Calcutta, India. Satyajit Ray maintained that the best filmmaking technique was one that was not noticeable. Satyajit Ray was Master in every department of filmmaking. He was in charge of writing, casting, directing, scoring, operating the camera, collaborating on art direction and editing, and even designing his own credit titles and publicity material. His films are a close to complete personal expression as it is possible in cinema.
However, with Pather Panchali, Satyajit Ray suddenly gained prominence. The film went on to win numerous international awards, including Best Human Documentary at Cannes. The success of Pather Panchali launched Ray's extraordinary international film career.
He was the second film personality to receive an honorary Doctorate from Oxford University, following Charlie Chaplin, another world cinema icon. Satyajit Ray received numerous awards throughout his film career, which spanned over four decades. One of the Significant film awards included the Academy Honorary Award (1992), which he received shortly before his death.
