As often as you come together...is the answer...as that was the practice in the early church.
The PCA church I’m going to attend does it weekly. I personally agree with Calvin.
We’re PCA participating monthly but strongly leaning towards weekly
I am in a small URCNA congregation that takes the Lords Supper every Lord’s Day.
I'm a fellow PCA female long time listener! My PCA takes the Lords Supper once a month
Thanks for the video Pastor Everhard. Would you please consider making a video on tithing?
I'm 75, female and listening from Australia.
Great video Matthew but a slight correction for you.
You said several times that the Free Church of Scotland only holds communion once a year and had Church of Scotland on your graph under once a year as well. These are separate denominations (the Free Church coming out of the CoS.)
The Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland is a 3rd denomination that is very small, I do not know how often they take communion but they are not the same as the Free Church of Scotland.
As a Free Church of Scotland member I can confirm that there is no rule in the Free Church of Scotland governing the frequency of communion. It is up to each Session to decide how often to hold it.
Typically it is held every 8 weeks.
I believe the Church of Scotland hold communion services quarterly also.
Personally I agree with Calvin and would love to see weekly communion.
God bless!
The Scottish Communion season sounds like Lent or Holy Week.
I think we should only have coffee once or twice a year. That would make it more special. ;-)
My church used to celebrate the Lord's Supper every 6 weeks. We have since changed to every week. Have a blessed day.
Our EPC church has communion weekly as well as at Maundy Thursday and Christmas Eve services. Both wine and juice are offered.
Calvin is based sometimes. And this is one of those times.
Thanks for the video Pastor Everhard.
I love your content brother
As feast keepers we keep on the Holy days and the Sabbath. It keeps our minds on Messiah and what He did for mankind.
What an interesting video, thanks brother.
@Matthew Everhard have you ever read the Patristic Roots of Reformed Worship? Old makes the case that the first Reformers wanted weekly celebration of the Lord’s Supper especially in the cities, but sometimes in the country settings allowed for once a month. In any case, a highly recommended read if you can get your hands on a copy.
Very helpful, thank you very much
That Rocawear shirt is fly, dawg.
It seems that you read the once or twice a year quote from the Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland website, which is distinct from the FCoS or FCoS Continuing.
Also, if I am not mistaken, Calvin is the one who is regarded as having introduced the communion tokens practice and was adamant on examining his flock before they came to the table. Interesting history
Aye, FCoS and the FCC do it 2-4 times a year. The reasons are mostly historical and traditional as opposed to theological, so few in those denominations would have any serious issue with congregations that do it anything up to weekly
Weekly in my opinion
What is the PCA's position on giving communion to a terminally ill congregant in her home? She has requested it as a final sacrament with her Lord. Our church celebrates the Lord's Supper perhaps quarterly. What are your thoughts on this?
If reformed people believe it is a means of grace, then it makes no sense for them to not do it every Sunday at a minimum. Why provide something they believe is a spiritual good for the people to only once a month or quarter or year etc
I see that you missed the part of the video where Matt encouraged charity in the way we discuss this issue.
@@TheDareD3vil it is uncharitable to point out an inconsistency in practice of one’s belief now?
That is a fair point, though there could be logistical-related limitations. I agree that it should occur as often as is practical, and practicality should not be used as a blanket excuse. Only real logistical complications should be factors. I am a proponent of weekly.
@@StAnthonyPaduaRadTrad it sounds uncharitable to say that the position of a large proportion of conservative reformed churches “makes no sense.” There are charitable ways to make your point. You could say: “it seems inconsistent to me for this reason…”

There is one reasoning you haven't mentioned as to why churches will do it yearly or quarterly and that is time and expense. It sounds shallow but is very true.
This is the biggest reason I have found that churches neglect the Sacrament.
The Early Church received The Lord's Supper daily, "And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts..." Acts 2.46
Hi Matthew, what is the youngest age at which a person should be taking Lord's supper and also voting in a PCA church?
We will partake of the Lord's supper as often as the Lord wills. But Christians never practice anything.
The correct option is to discard all human traditions, opinions, and man-made manuals and return to the sacred scriptures. God's word tells us that the disciples "met on the first day of the week to break bread." (Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 11:17-33; 1 Corinthians 16:2).
...and of course if "breaking bread" meant observing the Lord's Supper, this would be very important in guiding the practice of the churches today--but that's an assumption you're making, not something that's stated in the text.
@@danbrown586 no assumption at all. The verse and the context clearly identifies the needed information. The other texts I cited also contain extremely important biblical facts. No person will learn truth and be saved by what they learn if the sacred scriptures are discarded and human creeds, traditions, and opinions are allowed to supplant the will of God. (Matthew 15:1-14)
@@mikerichards8400 "No person will learn truth and be saved by what they learn if the sacred scriptures are discarded and human creeds, traditions, and opinions are allowed to supplant the will of God." Indeed. Which is why it's troublesome that you assume your human tradition of observing the Lord's Supper weekly, and read that back into texts that say nothing of the kind. "Breaking bread" has no necessary connection with the sacrament; it could just as likely (if not more so) be a tradition of a fellowship meal.
Neither Christ nor the apostles gave any recorded instruction as to how often the sacrament should be observed. Even supposing that Scripture clearly showed the First-Century church observing it weekly--which it does not--description does not constitute prescription. But in the absence, not only of instruction, but also of clear example, I believe the Westminster Assembly was correct in leaving it to the wisdom and prayerful discernment of the leadership of the individual churches.
The "traditions, opinions, and man-made manuals" reflect those people's understandings of the sacred scriptures.
While I am with you on the frequency of communion, that is your opinion, which is joined to the opinions of others.
@@tomberry66 it's not my opinion. It's the testimony of the sacred scriptures. When a person reads and understands Genesis 1:1, is it their opinion that God created the heavens and the earth? Or is it just what the scriptures say?
Don't you think your reply should include what the Bible says? Does the practice followed by individuals and churches take precedence over the Bible? Or do you think the Bible has nothing to say of the frequency in which we should celebrate the Lord's Supper?
You might need to listen again. He does explain how different individuals got to their views based on their understanding of the Bible.
This is an area where there is much disagreement among people who sincerely confess the Bible as the infallible Word of God.
