"Final Fantasy IV: The During Years"
It continues to be a crime that there aren't more subs here. Love the videos!

other than the final fight mechanics, I had the opposite reaction to everything you said for Pande. But it is nice to hear your thoughts what didn't work for you and why it work for me. So like, I do like the idea that heart of sabit can corrupt people. But I like magical items that corrupt people. Still, good video and really enjoyed hearing your thoughts.

My problem with that about the Heart of Sabik is that in this case it mostly just serves to make Athena less interesting. It's a plot beat that feels like it's in the wrong story, at best.

@@EinDose I never found make her less interesting, but again, I just like corruption tropes. But I can see your point how it can make her seem less interesting. It is a tool that making her nature worst, and not just her having a bad nature to begin with.

An interesting note on the flashback scenes. The name "Durante" is the birth name of Dante Alighieri so it's a reference to the names of the previous characters in the last couple of patches. Curiously enough the name of this person in the Japanese version is apparently "Man who appears to be your partner" so we actually didn't get a correct name for him though this may be because it's actually unimportant in the long run.
The Elidibus ending was fine. When we met him prior to the raids, he wasn't really in his faculties. Even now in the end of the raid, he died. What more do you want? We would have gained nothing with an admonishment overshadowing the emotion and finality of the moment. Would you criticize a senile grandparent for something they did in a fugue state while they lay on their death bed? We killed him, we're owed nothing more.

The thing that disappoints me about Elidibus, I think, is less 'we should've done more against him' and more that what they did was fairly disappointing. I don't want to admonish or punish him, but as I said, I can't be sympathetic towards a character like that unless the crimes they committed are invited to the table as well. And with Elidibus they really could've done something interesting there and just didn't; his situation would've been perfect for an 'oh god, what have I DONE' revelation, which isn't something we've had before in this game.

There's an enemy in the aetherfront with the same model as the elementals (even though they have a different name); more evidence that they just show up anywhere with a ton of aether?

    • @EinDose
      @EinDose  Год назад +2

Could be! Could also just be a reused model.

That little envelope, you mention it for 2 seconds and it will define the next 2 years of FFXIV. If only we knew :)

We did know! Or at least, I'd reasonably intuited it was important. But there wasn't much to say about it yet, it was simply 'an envelope'.

MSQ- the IV fanservice toes the line, personally. The other homages usually weren't this extensively prolonged and direct, aside from Crystal Tower's III (which because that's not as well-known in the West) but at the same time XIV still isn't doing a beat by beat story, and it's not like most of the other bosses aren't direct FF pulls. I think if this arc had some boss models from games that weren't IV it'd help the accusations.
The path of Sharlayan-Garlemald-Red Moon was predictable and no major curveballs except in how plot points were arrived at i.e. Golbez's true identity and how Zeromus is summoned. Having the Power of Friendship be the tangible 'networking and pre acquired trust and allies means cutting through bureaucratic red tape' while also showing that a good hero doesn't unilaterally and ruthlessly ignore the government and people of the areas in which the quest fetches could be argued as padding to cut but by showing it gets the point across.
    Gundam was very Gundam.
The decision to have the third tier of Pandae in the modern day but still wanting the NPCs because the real story meat is that family relationship dynamic and the dramatic irony history with the WoL ...the writing had to strain to make it work and with Themis in particular it buckled under the weight. Wanted to have the cake and eat it too by having the pre-Zodiark primal hollowed out Elidibus fight but keep the emotional weight of the 5.3 and 6.0 cutscenes. Heart of Sabik wasn't a mystery to me either; didn't need more -BUT. The Ivalice Raids adding in the High Seraph to muddy the lore and be this giant outlier that didn't slot neatly back into any other world-building (auracite could have just been purely Ascian creation same as their purposefully faulty summoning rituals). Giant Space Flea from Nowhere Ultima needed something else in XIV mentioning her and using that plot point because it sat as disconnected and obviously a guest writer's carryover as all the Nier Raid stuff, and that at least was completely self contained. It weakens Athena (not as badly as it could have, so rare to have an evil mother without a last second tenderness for her child) but it strengthened Orbonne.

I'd argue that Omega was much more blatant than 6.x about its references, mainly because the plot was so plainly an excuse to do throwback boss fights, while 6.x is doing its own story and happening to use old designs.
Both stories make it a long way out of the fact they're pulling from sprite-based FF games, though (as did the Crystal Tower). I talked about this at some point for why they can't do similar plots for borrowing from anything after XII; the visible effort at play in recreating these old designs do the main bulk of selling it as an homage rather than an easy reference. You couldn't do this with, like, FFXIII bosses, because it'd look lazy.

@@EinDose omega’s threadbare excuse for fan service is on another tier of fanservice that I only really treat Midgarsommr and the last two Omega fights as at all pertinent to the raid story and frankly pretend the other fights barely registered above the normal trash fight.
