I met and talked to Rod at a sports show years ago. What a delightful , gifted and humble man. Nothing sad about Rocket Rod. He is up there with Arthur Ashe, Roy Emerson, John Newcombe as the greats of their tennis era!
I had the immense pleasure of interviewing Rod at the Lew Hoad Campo de Tennis at Mijas Spain in July 1994 for 31 mutes. Lew had just died on 3rd July and a memorial tournament was played on the Centre Court with many of his contemporaries playing with and against him, in entertaining doubles matches for the attending spectators.
The title of this podcast is foolish. Rod Laver is Australia's favorite son. He has brought nothing but honor and dignity to everything he's been part of. That he suffers in his old age is no different than most. It's not sad. It's "life !!" The next time you post something pertaining to Laver post a title that honors the man, not misleads / belittles his life.
Rod Laver was my inspiration when I was growing up - I too learnt tennis in India on a sandy ant hill court - and he inspires me even now at 72. I stay fit because I think of Laver and get myself started on my workout.
Can’t trust a story where the author can’t even spell the main character’s name right!! Sheesh! Rod Laver has not had a tragic life. Best ever tennis god!!
Mine too. He was the one who inspired me to get into tennis at age 12 to play for my Junior high school. I played till age 27, when multiple car wrecks put an end to my playing days. Now at 74 like him, I've suffered 5 strokes in 3 years leaving me weak on my left side. I no longer drive and have to use a walker because since my 3rd stroke I've been Very dizzy to the point I feel like I'm going to pass out. I'm glad Laver is recovering from his stroke. 😊👍😎
I stopped watching tennis 20+ years ago. The power of the rackets had ruined the game... all serve and return. I was spoilt watching Laver and his contemporaries in my youth when tennis was an edge of your seat, all court game.
Totally different game now. Laver inspired me to get into tennis and I played for 15 years till multiple car wrecks did me in. Now in my 70's 5 strokes in 3 years have sidelined me where I'm no longer able to drive and have to use a walker to get around. ☹️ Glad he's recovering. 😊👍😎
It's understandable that you became jaded with the power game at the time. It really did descend into who could smash the ball the hardest & fastest. That is why the powers that be intervened & have given us the glorious tennis we have today. The tennis balls are now lighter & the hard courts are now softer, so that the all power game has been made redundant. It's a shame that you haven't allowed yourself to watch the great Federer, Nadal, Djokovic or Murray, just to name a few of the more recent giants of tennis. Now, there's a new generation of tennis maestros giving us all the benefit of their inimitable skills & daring, led by the young Spaniard, Carlos Alcaraz. Do yourself a favour, cast off your blinkers & give yourself permission to be dazzled again. Be entertained, once again, by the greatest game of all.
@@67daltonknox I met Rod Laver in Toronto while competing in junior nationals while he was in the Canadian Open finals. I was surprised he was not very tall and thought what a great champion he was when I watched him play. To me he was the first tennis legend of more that would develop we could cheer over years to come. His legacy is long living.

Me too, I played high school tennis in the late 60's and Laver was also an inspiration to me, my favorite players, and I am also 72!

Rod Laver, not Lever. Even after several people have written that you misspelled it, you haven’t edited it and corrected it. Show some respect🙏🏻

Well you greatly missed on Roger Federer’s all court game and currently on Carlos Alcaraz as well.

Such a bad telling of Rod Laver . He’s a great man , you make it sound as though he/is sad . I bet he’s not …not that sort of person 👍🏻🆒🤗
His name is Rod Laver
So, ?? ? What is the tragic??
He had a stroke, he has fought back! And has won!
This video could have had a different title...
It is disappointing...
I learned to play on that court. My son learned to play tennis on that exact court. My father used to maintain the court. We lived in the house in front of the court for some of that time
Who wrote the script for this drivel? It’s honestly some of the worst writing I’ve ever had the misfortune to hear.
HEY PALSY WELSY? YOU WRIGHT BETTER ONE? ? ? ?
His name is Rod *LAVER!! What’s sad is you getting his name wrong!! Doesn’t anyone check what they type on the internet anymore…!!
Very sad. It's sad how they always take a aging person and talk about how sad how he lives now, click bait for sure and that is truly sad!
So true. It’s shameful.
How about correcting your misspelling ?
Disgraceful Clickbait. Shameful. Can’t even spell his surname.
It would be great if you got his surname correct in the title!!
Laver ...couldnt even get that right
“Lever “ in the title is wrong and bad enough but then it turns out the entire title is just bull.
Clickbait title. Noted to ignore this site.
Its laver not lever
Bro, statues existed back in the 1960s. Were you born like 5 months ago or something? I mean...WTF.
GOAT... so says federer
Without doubt the GOAT of tennis

Why cannot you spell the man's surname correctly. Asinine!
These are all lies.
