I like J’s answer a lot... but I think it’s also that white people have come to understand that black people have this sort of natural, innate sense of “cool”... are basically born with swag. And ever since the 90s and hip hop has grown into the mainstream, black culture and black people have become the sort of “curators of cool” and what’s cool in culture in general. Lol... Am I thinking too much into this rhetorical question? Or Am I right on the money? Lol... maybe a little of column A and a little of column B. Also, what J said makes sense too.
The lyrics to almost every Primus song tell a story. This is one of the best. First a young boy and his mother head to America after his father died, he sees the sattue of liberty and believes he will have a better life in America. The second verse is Omg a refugee from Laos, he works in a factory where he solders electronics, "the smoke from the flux" fills his lungs, essentially giving him a slow death, he spends his spare time on San Pablo ave, and once a week "gets a woman for the night" basically he gets a hooker and he "writes home tales of prosperity" despite his job killing him and spending money on hookers he tells everyone back home how great American Life is. You pretty much got the third verse, bob is a veteran, homeless with a dog picking up cans for money. The one word you missed was he plays a little "guit" just short for guitar, but unlike the first two, if you listen, Les says he was "born" into American Life. Really powerful statement. Les had books and books of lyrics before he ever wrote the music, not only is he an amazing bass player, but he's a real poet, "my name is mud" is written in iambic pentameter, the same as the raven by Edgar Allen Poe.
Les Claypool is an American treasure. You nailed it with this assessment. I'd be a wealthy man if I had a dime for all the things Claypool taught to me! He has moved my very soul with his slap bass stylings.
I always loved how Primus is this goofy tongue in cheek sort of band, but they have more than a few songs that get more real than 80% of artists ever will. Check out To Defy The Laws of Tradition, I think Les says some things that will probably never change

I know there are a lot of talented musicians who play and sing, but the crazy complex bass lines he comes up with and sings to are outlandish. I've seen them several times and they never disappoint.
I feel this song on a personal level. The beginning bass part is my alarm clock tone, so every day has started with this. It's been that way for roughly 3 years.
Hi Jamal! I'm so glad you discovered this track. It's one of the most powerful primus songs I've ever heard and I've been listening to them since 1989. Les is the reason I've played bass for 27 years. His story telling is second to none. And he's a brilliant musician not to take away from the rest of the band.
My favorite Primus album. Listened to the CD so much in junior high I wore it out. Had to get a 2nd one. This song was trippy b4 I even knew what trippy was. Good pick!!
It's a hard pick for me, they're just straight up my favorite band haha. I love how dark pork soda is, but I really dig the psychedelic weirdness of tales from the punchbowl, and the dirty folk vibe from brown album. Seas of cheese is definitely their cleanest, most streamline album for sure.
This track features some of Herb and Larry's finest work. The reverb in the production on his voice and the percussive drums is so evocative. So glad you dig their unique sound.

I'm happy for you because you discovered one of the BAND!!!!.........Primus discovered something so unique that you can even imitate......they are one of the kind!!!!
One of the first things I did to get back to living my life after loosing my Pops, was seeing Kobe play his last game @ the Rose Garden 2016 - reflecting on what happened, it is clear Kobe's inspiration runs deep world wide. I say let us take his example, live to your fullest potential. Have a vision, a goal, put in the work, don't let the naysayers get in your head. Forget plan b, ( safety net ) Go all out with plan A. Be calm and calculated. What needs arise will be met when you discipline yourself. Love to Kobe, all fans, and especially the families who are hurting.
Hah, I've listened to this song on the regular for decades and never picked up on the veteran's angle. Super refreshing to see, and, again, a pleasure to witness your obvious appreciation for the substance of Les's work. So thank you.
Excellent pick...I heard Primus 1st in '91 and got a truck in '97, Primus ran my life and you get what you get from it I believe 👍. Thanks for your time😎. My uncle is 55 he digs it his son is 20 he slams to it. Thx again.
Hells yeah, so good to witness you discover one of the the truly great modern musicians, and one of recent history's greatest bands. Les is a true virtuoso on his instrument of choice. And we all need that bass. All of us. Welcome.
Check out his other projects too! You'll be surprised by the diversity. Oysterhead, Colonel Claypools Bucket of Bernie Brains, Lennon Claypool Delirium (son of John Lennon of The Beatles), Fearless Frog Brigade are all worth listening to.

I don't care what color you are, brother, I just really appreciate how DEEPLY you enjoy and react to music! I react the same way. It does UNITE us, as you've said. I suggest you try something very unusual to most people: A piano piece called "The Mephisto Waltz" composed by the Romantic Period composer Franz Liszt. You must listen to the version done by Vladimir Horowitz. Horowitz adds diabolical FIRE to the piece, which isn't just some klunky waltz...It was the rock n' roll of its day. It is one of the most technically difficult pieces to play and I'm telling you, IT RAGES! It also has a beautiful melodic part that could bring you to tears. Truly amazing!

Yes! Thank you for reacting to this one. It's the one song that got me hooked on them. Keep the videos rolling, you are doing a wonderful job. PRIMUS SUCKS!!
THE perfect bass jam session riff. Name another one that rocked that hard throughtout an ENTIRE SONG and banged that hard? One long bad ass jam session. They were so on point together. Btw, bruh, I was vibin so hard on the same vibe you were on. This song is truly awesome and its like that for me EVERY time I hear it. And thats like 3 or 4 times a week. Fr. Les Claypool is on a whole different level when it come to bass. Hella good reaction video. Im subscribing.
So glad to see you get at this one, this is one of my favorite Primus songs from hands down my favorite Primus album. "Plays a little guit" is what you stumbled on, guit being short for guitar.
Your "fans" have great taste in music and the fact that you appreciate it lends credit, much credit! Had many of head tripping nights with PRIMUS in the drivers seat!
These dudes we from another planet. I remember back in the day, Les would come out and say, "we're Primus and we suck". Then they'd break out to this stuff. Iconic band and music. 'Sailing the Seas of Cheese' was one of the best recordings in the history of music.
It feels good that Jamal is expanding his horizon. Finding other music besides mindless pop and rap or whatever. Rock as a category in general covers so many genres.
Been watching your Primus videos consecutively as you release them. I love seeing you going down the Primus hole man, once you start you can't stop! A few suggestions Hoinfodaman, Nature Boy, DMV, and, Mary the Ice Cube
Jamel, the importance I get from watching a black guy react to 'my' music is different from others. I grew up taking beatings just 'cause I was a white kid in a bad neighborhood. I was always told my music is sh@t and pushed around. U r a honest reactor and it's a breath of fresh air to see no bias whatsoever. Rock on Jamel
@@danielkinn782 Yes, not only is he singing and playing bass, the bass lick is done in a way that it actually sounds like an echo/delay, but its all Les.
Jamal, I recently started watching your videos. Your reactions are very genuine and spot on lol. I hope you could do a reaction of some Drive-By Truckers songs. Putting People on the Moon or Plastic Flowers on the Highway would be my first suggestions!
Primus is almost like a kink. You feel bad for liking it, but you can't get enough of it. I swear, when I rediscovered Primus, I couldn't go more than 3 hours without hearing Primus, and I couldn't go more than 5 minutes without humming a primus song.
Sailing the Seas of Cheese. They considered their competition, the hair bands of the day, to be cheesy. (This album was released a few months before Nirvana's epic Nevermind if I recall correctly. So Grunge hadn't really happened yet.) Hence the title of the album. Boy howdy, watching these reactions of yours made me wanna break out all my old Primus discs, which I couldn't find. Somebody probably "borrowed" them in the days before everybody could just hear whatever they want to hear on RUclips whenever they want. Still, gotta ask for SOMETHING this Christmas. Haha, my list just got started.
Primus is one of my favorite bands! Glad you enjoy them also i would really really appreciate if you did a reaction video to here they come by primus you wont regret it!!
Love this song. Les is a legend!! You should checkout Twelve Foot Ninja - One Hand Killing. Is a rocking band with similar humorous side like Primus. Love your work!!
The first time I saw Primus live, I was hoping they'd do this, and Sgt. Baker. But, for some reason I don't remember, I didn't think they would. Instead, they ended up being the first two songs they did.
The video for Primus "American Life" was filmed at Bonneroo 2011. Check it out. Les Claypools technique is amazing, his style is called percussive bass. Also check out Jill's on smack too, at Bonneroo 2011 also. You will love it. Great job
THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS! Spegetti Western is another great primus song. Check out Les Claypool and Sean Lennon (John Lennon's son) side project band too. its ridiculous in every good way.
It took me a while to get into Primus, because even though it's kind of catchy in it's own unique way, it's not would you call easy listening. Cool to see how much you get into it on the first listen
Why is it so important to white people that black people think our stuff is cool?
Maybe People are trying to help unite us, you ever think about that?? And PRIMUS isn’t cool, PRIMUS SUCKS 🤘🏾
Maybe because they find it cool...Music is everyone's stuff!!!
ScienceFoundation Because most of us don’t like animosity between peoples. It’s better to seek out what unites us than what makes us different.
I like J’s answer a lot... but I think it’s also that white people have come to understand that black people have this sort of natural, innate sense of “cool”... are basically born with swag.
I appreciate this guy is open to suggestions of others and enjoys the music and recognizes talent.
So glad to see you get at this one, this is one of my favorite Primus songs from hands down my favorite Primus album.
"Plays a little guit" is what you stumbled on, guit being short for guitar.
I like that you feel with the guitar. Most people pass up listening to Larry and Tim because the bass is up front and so impressive.
Listen to the live Bonaroo 2011 version when you can, its magical.
I second this.
Ya know man, besides the few "well known songs",I never realized how much I love Primus(after all these years)😎👍
Would love to see you do their song "Pork Soda"! The lyrics and bass in that song are... truly something else
These lyrics hit HARD. The last two times I have seen them live they have opened with Too many Puppies followed by American Life.
Some serious sounds from a complete band with awesome bass and lead guitar and savage drums.....
Your "fans" have great taste in music and the fact that you appreciate it lends credit, much credit! Had many of head tripping nights with PRIMUS in the drivers seat!
The main bass line is pretty difficult to play, but playing it for so long while singing is incredibly difficult! I love this song!
Huge Primus fan and I love this guy’s reaction videos!!!
These dudes we from another planet. I remember back in the day, Les would come out and say, "we're Primus and we suck". Then they'd break out to this stuff. Iconic band and music. 'Sailing the Seas of Cheese' was one of the best recordings in the history of music.
One of my favorite basslines ever... love this song
I think its wonderful that people are discovering such awesome music that I was exposed to sometime ...15 years ago
Primus did a killer version of The Thing That Should Not Be (Metallica)
Most of what Primus does is wicked!
That fucking bass (no disrepect to Cliff) is sooo fucking chonky in that cover. Absolute filthy rendition.
Kyle Schmidt - They also did an awesome cover of Pink Floyd's "Have a Cigar"
Kyle Schmidt Their version of “Have a Cigar” is really cool also. 🙂
The Primus album Miscellaneous Debris is all cover songs.
I have had the privilege of seeing this band live 5 times, they were amazing every time. Check out Primus with bucket head on guitar.
Larry Lalonde with his semitones...it's like a mix of Black Flag and Avant-guard music. Simply awesome.
this is one of my favourite Primus songs. Thanks, J!
he's singing and playing bass AT THE SAME TIME!
He is?
@@danielkinn782 Yes, not only is he singing and playing bass, the bass lick is done in a way that it actually sounds like an echo/delay, but its all Les.
@@kirtfulcher6288 Dude I was kidding/sarcastic. I'm actually friends with Les.....😝
He sucks on that
@@jaffetsanz9254 Primus Sucks!
Jamal, I recently started watching your videos. Your reactions are very genuine and spot on lol. I hope you could do a reaction of some Drive-By Truckers songs. Putting People on the Moon or Plastic Flowers on the Highway would be my first suggestions!
Love me some Primus, & you do a good job reacting to them and other metall/querky bands... keep up the good work man. Greetings from Norway....🤘😁
Primus is almost like a kink. You feel bad for liking it, but you can't get enough of it. I swear, when I rediscovered Primus, I couldn't go more than 3 hours without hearing Primus, and I couldn't go more than 5 minutes without humming a primus song.
Love watching your reactions 😆 agreed they are very “Addicting” !!!
#PRIMUSSUCKS 🤘🏼
New highs and new depths for primus music! thumbs up man!!
This is my favorite Primus song.
Check out Primus' songs 'Groundhog's Day' and 'To Defy the Laws of Tradition' both are on the album Frizzle Fry. Keep up the good work!
This song makes me want to walk around with a confident stomp
Haha! Right?! I LOVE that stomp!
Should watch how les claypool played in his early days. He would stomp around the stage !
My first ever concert ever was seeing primus. Was an amazing experience!!!
How can Les Claypool make one instrument sound so sinister AND so ridiculously hilarious at the same time?
Seeing this performed live let alone just seeing Primus live is an amazing experience that you should experience
@Jamel_AKA_Jamal
@nynetynyne saw them 2 times so far.. everyone is always moving and jumping up and down, it's such a great time!
Love this song. Les is a legend!! You should checkout Twelve Foot Ninja - One Hand Killing. Is a rocking band with similar humorous side like Primus. Love your work!!
Please check out any of their live at bonnaroo stuff they will blow your mind dog! Some of the best live recording I've seen !
Great job
You found one of the deeper ones. Not the best, but definitely worth hearing. Keep digging, bud. Glad you're on board.
THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS! Spegetti Western is another great primus song. Check out Les Claypool and Sean Lennon (John Lennon's son) side project band too. its ridiculous in every good way.
What a bass lead in....! I am starting to listen to some Primus now...
This is soooo Fantastic live!!!! My favorite Primus Album!!
"toys go winding " live . Hallucino-genetics dvd. They are masters of their craft in that live performance
Is It Luck? Is another great song on this album too
My socks and shoes always match...
Is it luck?
Well I can play my bass for you 😏
@@ATthemusician I feel like this comment thread should be much longer by now lol
It took me a while to get into Primus, because even though it's kind of catchy in it's own unique way, it's not would you call easy listening. Cool to see how much you get into it on the first listen
