You are not getting the character. Making fun of Garma all the time as Char might have been, Garma is virtually Char's only friend. It is weird, but Garma is the only person who treats Char as equal. Others worship or regard him as a soldier only. But Char is vicious enough to let himself forget about it to kill anyone and never feel for a second in the following 14 years till his own death. That is what the director understand as an arrogant hero of the volatile war times.
Burritos Zhu oh he was always like that look at the original char and Lino Fernandez he back stabbed so he could get revenge against the Zabis and Lino was even willing to help.
alexander I think he does not care about what Lino thinks or feels. Char does not bother justifying his killing Lino. But after Garma died, the director did gave him a lonely scene in a pub. He was forced to rethink and went for a greater goal, without stopping to pursue the revenge. Garma is different, because his death does not really make Char feel as good as he had imagined. Murdering Garma pulls him back a bit. In the end, he did not annihilate the entire Zabi family and support the orphan Mineva till his exile from Axis. I do think he moved on.
idk I always felt like Char genuinely liked Garma and held no ill will towards but it was unfortunately necessary to have him killed for his quest for revenge against the Zabi family..

However, the Principality made various backwards decisions before and during the One Year War. Some of which would've led to their ultimate downfall regardless of the outcome of the war. Decisions which are detailed in this post for the curious.
Probably closer to 6 billion, 1.2 billion on Earth and 4.8 billion in outer space, as 80% of the Human race was living in outer space and it was said that roughly half of their respective population was destroyed. Destroyed by the time of January 15th 0079 when the Principality of Zeon performed it's colony drop against the Earth.
The principality of Zeon had 120 million citizens at this point, that is 1/10th the surviving population of Earth. However, in terms of military force, Zeon only had 60 naval vessels while the Earth Federation space forces had amassed 4 units of the same size. There are, however 4.68 billion regular spacenoids left floating around in the space colonies of their various sides(teritories divided between the Lagrange points), in terror of both the federation and Zeon. If it were not for the superior manoeuvrability of Zeon's newly developed MS, the Zaku and Zaku II which were able to carry fire power that rivalled and even surpassed that of space cruisers, the Zeon wouldn't have stalemated the federation forces for months, never mind pulling ahead in terms of military superiority(as their RnD department kept building more specialized MS) but would have been annihilated within the same month it's opposition started. Char alone sank 5/60 space cruisers of the Earth federation in this battle, with the support fire of his subordinate suites, it was probably over 10 that his team sank in that battle. I suspect the numbers will shift with this new retelling as it is obvious he engages the enemy much sooner on his own than he did in the clip where he did so with cover fire from his troops.
The OVAs said that the colony drop and the resulting environmental damages caused half the Earth´s population to perish. I think the colonies got off lightly in comparison, unless there was some sort of mass exodus from Earth to the colonies?
I don't know story in this anime, but if any Space Age state will kill billions of citizens from other state it will be total war and both sides will get wiped out. Even now if World War will start only simplest life forms will survive, and destroying planets becomes easier each year. Breaking isn't building, as they say.
