"It transports me to maybe not a better time, but a time where I felt most like my true self." Man didn't expect to get so emotional at the end there. No sarcasm or jokes that really hit a nerve.
Honestly it was lovely to hear that talk at the beginning. I still feel silly for ever thinking I was too old for toys, and apparently my parents agree. I got Fasttrack in the post the other day, and when my mum took a look at him she was like "ah he's lovely. He's cute!" She also said that about Earthrise Starscream. I think dad better watch out, she's clearly into bad boys. Or straight-up evil pricks. Fuck, *I* better watch out.
I have a distinct memory of sitting in the back of my folks' car on the way home from the supermarket with the original version of this excellent Prime. Truly a powerful master.
Hilarious and clever as always, but also incredibly touching. Never thought I would feel anything other than amusement watching these, let alone forlorn self-aware nostalgia.
Love how you inject your experience into the review. I was 10 when I got Powermaster Prime for christmas, and to give you an idea, normally I might get something like Hound or Perceptor (who I still loved). The trailer became the centerpiece for almost all the stories I told to myself. I found a million ways to reconfigure it in order to get more out of it. Panels became secret doors, arches into tunnels. So many fond memories.
My brother got him and I got Doubledealer. I was never that taken with the chicken/missile launcher dude but Prime looked the business with that chunky head, big red power eyes and those dirty big double shoulder cannons and big ass rifles. Gorgeous!
Super Ginrai and God Bomber, the bots that introduced the sentai/brave style combining and upgrade armor to Transformers! I'm glad that he was reissued at least once on both sides of the world.
Powermaster Optimus Prime was my first Optimus Prime. I got into the toys a bit late to buy the original, although I would get him through the mail in Robot Points deal in which I mailed in the payment and forgot to clip the Robot Points. I always was a bit miffed to see his fists stick out of the trailer section though. Fun thing I did back then was take the smokestacks off the original G1 Prime and that allowed his legs to fold back around completely and he would fit in the PowerMaster Prime trailer section, but the cab face would be flush with the rest of the chest. I wouldn't find out about the Japanese God Ginrai version until the late 90's when the world wide web became more of a resource for the hobby with photos. When the Japanese reissue came out, I ended up selling my PM Prime, complete with the original Canadian retail box, catalog etc, to finance the purchase of God Ginrai. I do regret doing that now, but it was the practical thing to do at the time.
I bought a God Ginrai reissue set back in mid to late 00s when I was collecting Optimus Primes. The collection also consists of Galaxy Force Prime, Star Convoy (another import reissue), the Prime that came in a Classics two pack with a Megatron, a Ultra Magnus repaint of Classics Prime, and finally, the 25th anniversary reissue of Optimus that pretty much capped off the collection for me, as that was the Optimus that I wanted in the past, and had to settle for Megatron.
My first ever memory was of this figure, I got it for Christmas and not a week later it was stolen from me... Cut to many years later having my own income I bought another one. Absolutely adore this figure.
I have the original release back in 1987 plus this reissue of 2003. Oh by the way I have two of each one Mitten box and the other mint loosen complete.
May I ask if your reissue was the Japanese E-Hobby version or the commemorative USA version? My E-Hobby version crumble up in pieces after I was cleaning and wanted to transform him. So I plan on buying another Power master.
I understand where your coming from with the childhood memories that what’s it like for me with Armada Deluxe Class Optimus Prime my first transformer ever and one I loved as a kid sadly it was donated years ago and no 11 years later I still want back in my collection not because it’s cool, but because of its sentimental value to me.
Someone my dad worked with, his kid let me have the reissue of this.. I broke the trailer hitch, lost some bits, and I never got the apex armor... I want to get another one because I really, really loved that figure...
Great video, as always! I mean, the toy is nifty and all, but the part about not giving up the things you cherish is the most important part of this video for me. Cripes, if my parents hadn't brow-beaten me into getting rid of a lot of my childhood stuff when I hit my teenage years . . . well, I wouldn't have been able to buy my own house, but I could probably have gotten my own car from selling a bunch of it when I hit my mid-20s.
There's actually a peg hole on the inside of the trailer that the big head fits into pretty well so it doesn't rattle around, though you have to split the legs to get at it.
1:28, dang it...DON'T MAKE ME THINK of that Nostalgia Critic 'It' movie review. XD 2:50, check out the Toonami days when God Gundam from G Gundam was called Burning Gundam, Devil Gundam into Dark Gundam and Gundam Wing's Gundam Hellscythe toys were removed from Toys 'R Us despite him being the main hero counterpart. And Helspont from WildC.A.T.s as well as Spawn toys were accepted in the 90's but this was early 2ks....chickens.
I was "too old" for toys when this came out but I still read the comics. Getting to see the toy about 10 years after the fact was... disappointing. I have one but its more cuz it was cheap and it gave me an Optimus before all the rereleases and endless new Optimuseses. Though these days my personal favorite Op i own is the Bumblebee Studio Series one. Its friggin great. Now there are 3rd party versions of that look that are more greater but 200 bucks usd is too much. Id feel like an idiot paying half that.
Looking at mine it seems that mine is a hybrid of the original and the reissue. The core robot is from the original and the trailer is from the reissue
I'm late to your video, may I ask if this is the Japanese E-Hobby version or the commemorative reissue? My E-Hobby was named God Ginrai and earlier today I cleaned and tried to transform him but it literally crumbled to pieces in my hand, the blue plastic parts became brittle after 23 years, His small version feet crumbled off and his Ginrai hands and feet cracked apart when forming God Bomber Ginrai. I plan on buying a newer one since the "white underwear" became yellow too, makes it look like Prime pee'd himself. By the way, I have Fire Guts God Ginrai and that's said to be the Holy Grail of the Optimus Prime collection.
@@TRDQ ok, I'll shop around, I saw different renditions of the Power master but I still like the God Ginrai version since it's double trailer and taller

He should look sheepish, he gave us the legacy of fake chest windows.
My holiest of grails… Powermaster Optimus Prime. Just beating G1 Prime.
This review speaks to me on so many levels. Two. Two levels. But that’s much more than most.
Fun fact apex bomber is classified as roller in some bits of tf media
Didn't grow up with G1, but i got this toy a few years ago and it's easily my favourite toy in my collection.
It's just so fun

Too soon. 😔
Great review! Heartwarming. I've actually wanted this toy for a long while, shame I never was able to.
NOW IS THE TIME
We need a modern series of power masters maybe they are piloted transenders like in the takara trilogy
It's called Titans Return.
It's Awesome!
Now that you've reviewed ginrai, you gotta review his arch Nemesis overlord.
No pressure but please
Sure thing just send it on to me and I'll get on it
