This *might* be sometime in 1972. I can't identify which show this is on. But I agree, it's a shame PR&R couldn't find their niche post-1970. Sadly, they are right up there with The Grass Roots, Three Dog Night, The Guess Who and even the Beach Boys who just could not seem to rekindle the fire they had ignited in the 60's. Madelow56: Yep, that sure looks like Smitty sittin' behind them skins. He did rejoin the boys briefly for the '71/'72 season and then left again. @Madelow56 I think must be. From what I've read, Joe Correro Jr. left the Raiders in '71. Don't know if he was fired. Mike came back briefly ('til '72) to join Mark on in his 'solo' appearances.
@catmarilyn9 It's not...I edited this portion out of the entire clip where Terry Williams (from the First Edition) is talking to the group before the performance. My post of 'The Original Handy Man' was from the Barbara McNair show. They also did 'Let Me' which I may post soon.
@Dawn1959 To continue where I left off, last summer I watched a video of Mark Lindsay singing "Arizona", which had a real cool slide show, and then I got curious and started watching some Paul Revere & The Raiders with, of course, Mark singing. Since then I've been hooked on the Raiders music. And I'm a guy too. I grew up listening to The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, etc, and I've listened to rock ever since. Just a piece of history about myself :)
@Dawn1959 That's funny you should say that :) The first actual video I saw of Paul Revere & The Raiders on RUclips was the Smothers Brothers performance and they were singing "Ups And Downs" and I thought to myself, "Wow!!! These guys are awesome!!!" So then I started watching other videos of the Raiders, and I just about drove my wife crazy because I was starting to talk about them constantly! And You're right! Life was more innocent back in the '60's than they are now!
"Wild Man" Dean that's funny you would say that man because I also have continuously over the last 40 years tried religious Lee to promote Raiders music with other musicians
interesting direction for the Raider's. Kieth Allison played guitar on the Monkees "Auntie's municipal Court" ~ a psychedelic country tinged masterpiece!
they were fairly versatile, but they were sort of a comedy act mixed with music, and i guess the public could not figure out what they were a band, and or a night club routine type of thing. Actually i think having see them many times over the years(from 1978-2012) they had probably the best musicians, and or show band around, they could do any style of music(jazz, blues, rock,r&b,country) and do it well, and well rehearsed, and so much fun, included, not many if any bands could do that.
They were a much different band... garage/pop during the 60's, early 70's. It wasn't until Mark Lindsay and the originals left, that Paul Revere kept them going as more of a cover/show act. Not saying that they're not talented... of course they are. Who knows now, since Paul has passed.
This band now the majority of them have been in the group 30+ years, way beyond, even the original group, to be still fairly popular at least in the concert scene is amazing, that no originals from early days, even Paul. They are probably musically one of the best show best out there. Hardly any bands doing that sort of thing, to be an all around great band, and not Corny. Even over the years with new members coming and going some(even wrote some great original material) and have re recorded alot of their hits over lots of albums and or cps. but it will never match the original hits,
@@60s70sVintageRock That was the main reason Mark left. He really wanted them to transform into a country rock group (which would have suited Keith and Freddy but they left before they had a chance) but Paul was thinking that with 1976 (and the US Bicentennial)) coming up, they could don the old gear and do the nostalgia thing. Mark already had an A & R job and a production job with Capitol, so he stepped away.
I like this one cause they're not just lipsynching to the record. These guys could really play! Freddy was a great guitarist, and it's nice to see Smitty back there on the drums.
@ronfowlermusic Speaking of Freddy, I thought it was kinda cool when he was playing a double-neck guitar on the Ed Sullivan Show, when they performed "Him or Me". Jimmy Page would be proud.
That was the guitar that Drake Levin always used or at least one like it. Drake (the Kid) Levin and Jim (Harpo) Valley were the only decent lead guitar players they had (Levin being the better of the two). Weller was OK but not as nimble-fingered as Drake and Jim. Charlie Coe I hear was pretty good too, but I've always only seen him on camera playing bass.
I read that when the rumors were going wild about Paul being dead that it was also rumored that Keith was used in the pictures where people claimed it wasn't Paul. People are so funny.
@Dawn1959 Just so you don't think I'm crazy, I meant the Raiders were never the same when Drake, Fang and Smitty left to form Brotherhood. Sorry, left that part out (I've been doing that a lot of late). Okay, I'm finally done.
It's great to see Smitty on drums. Mark does look better with the ponytail, that was his trademark, but the long hair is okay. That was the style in the early '70's. Paul's hair got long and he has a mustache which looks okay. Freddy and Keith are pretty cool, too, though Fang and Drake are better.
Looks like Paul is playing bass notes with left hand. But they probably had a bass player play on the instrumental track and maybe Paul played bass notes when they played live. I saw an interview with Mark where they asked him to describe each Raider in one word. When they said “Paul” Mark said “greedy.” So, although I can’t imagine the Raiders without a bass player, maybe Paul was too cheap to hire one at this point.
@@grouchosays keith allison is still the bassist for the raiders at this point. this performance has a backing track where the instruments are mimed, but the vocals are live
@Dawn1959 I mean, Fang, Drake and Smitty were the backbone to Paul Revere & The Raiders. And don't forget Mark with his ponytail (I know, he doesn't have it in this video). But Mark's ponytail was his trademark, and he drove the young girls wild. Ironically, I was born in '62, so when the Raiders were popular in the '60's I was just a toddler runnin' around. I did a lot of research, and I really started watching The Raiders' videos on RUclips last summer.
I don't believe Joe was fired, he quit because he felt that the band was on a downward spiral after the failure of Collage in 1970. Smitty came back and stayed until the end of '72. I don't know anything about Smitty performing on Mark's solo shows, certainly never read about it anywhere.
Joe was definitely NOT fired. He left of his own accord. From what I've gathered, he felt he was more of a Jazz drummer than a Rock drummer (even though, I personally think he was a GREAT rock drummer) and wanted to pursue other avenues. Joe had expressed his displeasure with the group during the recording sessions for the "Collage" album - tensions were high as a certain degree of success had eluded them and Joe didn't like the direction the group was headed. (The Collage album is even harder edged to a certain extent than even Pink Puzz or Hard & Heavy so, one could understand his point of view) Anywho, long story short, Mark, Paul and Keith convinced him to stick out the recording sessions. Paul had kept in touch with the other fellows who'd left a few years prior and when it looked like "The Brotherhood" wasn't going anywhere, Paul contacted Smitty and he came back for the Indian Reservation & Country Wine albums. @Dawn1959 Sorry to keep going on, but in response to Fang, Drake and Smitty, in my opinion, The Raiders were never the same. Drake was a great guitarist, and all the girls loved him. Isn't THAT the truth? It amazes me that people go to see a group of strangers with Paul Revere Dick on the keyboard performing as "Paul Revere & the Raiders"! Someone else singing Mark's songs?! No way. I will go see Mark do his hits with a different band behind him. PRD even sells CDs with Mark's picture on the front to trick people. That makes me mad. NOBODY can sing like Mark, & he still rocks it out at 71. Amazing, beautiful man.
Can you tell me the name of the CDs that have Mark Lindsay's face on the cover but that he is not actually on the recording? I have almost everything the Raiders ever released and I don't recall any recording CD or album like that. However I do have an album that has Mark Lindsay on the cover and it says Paul Revere's Raiders oh, but it is simply Mark Lindsay and his regular band, no Revere or Raiders on Mark Lindsay's album
Keith was a natural guitar player who played bass after he took over for Charlie Coe in 1968-69. Keith moved back to guitar in 1970 for the last few shows on tour when they brought back Fang to play bass. There was a plan to do that full-time but Fang was getting more work as a session guy (he played some shows with Rick Nelson after Randy Meisner left for the Eagles.
I remember when this song came out, and although I love PR&R, people usedto make fun of the song saying that they (the Raiders) couldn't think of any more lyrics for the "do do dooo do" part of the song. It really IS NOT one of their best but it is kind of catchy.
This was the Raider's last gasp as a relevant band in the early 70's. Unfortunately, and in my mind unfairly, it failed. It was a great album and fit in perfectly with the early 70's but it sadly failed, and the group would split apart and be kept alive by Paul as a cheesy oldies act.
John Ramsey Same thing with other "Pop" acts of the era: The Grass Roots, Three Dog Night even the Beach Boys just simply could not reignite the fire that made them super stars of the 60's. But I agree, The Raiders had the chops and Mark's was, and still is (I suppose) one of the greatest voices of the rock era. The only thing I think is that The Raiders lost the edge they had in the 60's. They were loose cannon's in the early days, but had gotten pretty docile by the early 70's. Sure, they weren't kids anymore and had to grow up, but why not keep it a little hard-edged? Songs like Indian Reservation, Powder Blue Mercedes Queen, Think Twice, Freeborn Man, Gone - Movin' On '69, are all hard-edged songs that even today sound amazing. I'm sure you could even chalk it up to Columbia promoting newer bands like Aerosmith, Boston, Blue Oyster Cult, etc. that also had a hand in sealing the Raiders' fate.
+Harold Lloyd Well said. If anybody doubts Mark Lindsay's talent get a copy of his CD "Life Out Loud" from 2013. It is the best music I have heard in years - and Mark was 71 years old when he did it. He is now 73 and still doing the Happy Together Tour (one is already set for 2016), still sounding AND looking fantastic. The man is timeless.
+Laurie L I've heard that Mark still has a master dub tape of their unreleased 1973 album. He has alluded several times on Facebook that he and his wife are going through the archives and over the next little while should be releasing some "gems" as Mark puts it. But just the fact that there was an album after "Country Wine" that was recorded, polished and mastered but left on the shelf by Columbia Records proves the fact that the Raiders were still willing to try, it was the record company that failed them. There was also a contractual obligation that infuriated Mark. Seems his solo work and his work with the Raiders was lumped together in the same financial bundle. I'm not 100% sure on how it worked, but it was explained to me that if Columbia released a Raiders album or single and it tanked while at the same time Mark Lindsay put out a solo album/single that did well; the session fees, pressing fees etc were paid for the Raiders album with Mark's solo album profits!! He only received the residuals after the record company recouped their losses. So, essentially, he was carrying BOTH the Raiders and himself financially. It's no wonder he quit!
+Harold Lloyd Hi. Wouldn't that be awesome to be able to hear that album? I would love that. That is what I understood about the reason Mark quit as well. "Indian Reservation" was originally to be his first solo but was put out as the Raiders. Of course, it was a #1 hit. As for the financial thing, when I first heard that I was so surprised and didn't blame Mark at all for quitting. He always did carry the Raiders in my opinion, and at that point Columbia just pushed him too far. From what I understand he showed up one day for his check and was told about the Raiders being in the red, etc, as you explained it. I think that would have pushed me over the edge as well.
+Laurie L Hi Laurie, I don't know if I would say that Mark carried the Raiders. That's a little unfair. But he was "The Voice" of the Raiders. I don't think either could exist without the other. There'd have been no Raiders without Mark and there wouldn't have been Mark without the Raiders. Also, the boys that played in the band, be it the Mark I Raiders (Smitty, Fang, Drake, etc) or Mark II (Freddy, Keith, Joe, etc) they are all really, really good players and could hold their own quite well. Mark was/is the glue that held the Raiders together. He's also a pretty good songwriter. He and Keith penned some of the most memorable later Raiders tunes together!
+joe pish No, he didn't. There was a concert where the Raiders were supposed to open for the Stones. The crowd was obviously there so see the Raiders and as angry as Jagger was about it the schedule was changed and the Stones opened for the Raiders. Mark always had his own style and never tried at all to be like Mick Jagger.
This was one of their worst songs, although they had tons of great stuff. Long Live Paul Revere and the Raiders 1960 - 2014, 54 years of rocking insanity
Bill Downing I agree with you. This song was on their last album Country Wine however there was better material they could have released such as the song Take A Stand with slide guitar

You lie. You've bought into the lies told by Mark Lindsay Dick.
Keith Alison should have been playing bass on this performance as there is bass but nobody playing bass.
piano
Keith was a natural guitar player who played bass after he took over for Charlie Coe in 1968-69. Keith moved back to guitar in 1970 for the last few shows on tour when they brought back Fang to play bass. There was a plan to do that full-time but Fang was getting more work as a session guy (he played some shows with Rick Nelson after Randy Meisner left for the Eagles.
is this much different than what was am top 40? wonder why it did not sell well...
liverneck jones Not at all. But Top 40 was not what kids of the time were into.
Kids back then were into extended guitar solos and underground radio stations.
I remember when this song came out, and although I love PR&R, people usedto make fun of the song saying that they (the Raiders) couldn't think of any more lyrics for the "do do dooo do" part of the song. It really IS NOT one of their best but it is kind of catchy.
Is that Mike Smith on drums? Didn't know he ever came back to PR&R after the Brotherhood. Did Paul fire Joe Correro Jr?
Nope. Joe left, Paul contacted Smitty and he jumped at the opportunity to come back to the Raiders.
smitty came back in 70 replacing correro according to billboard
Keith,at one point was a decoy double for Paul McCartney when the Beatles were getting mobbed everywhere they went. Mitch.
Even Leon Russell filled in for Paul around 61’, 62’ when Revere was a conscientious objector and worked as cook in a mental hospital
To bze2nlz4: Very interesting. Thanks for sharing. PR&R are my favorite U.S. band, and it's great to learn new things about them. Thanks again!
lookin like elvis here.....
He's smiling - that's bored?
Trying the Elvis look
ev dallas My thought exactly.
mark wanted to be jagger
+joe pish No, he didn't. There was a concert where the Raiders were supposed to open for the Stones. The crowd was obviously there so see the Raiders and as angry as Jagger was about it the schedule was changed and the Stones opened for the Raiders. Mark always had his own style and never tried at all to be like Mick Jagger.
+joe pish oh please, why would he want to be jagger? he sang 1000 times better
+cyn guilbeau Amen to that, cyn!
or should I say, he still can sing, 1000 TIMES better, hes still got it
+cyn guilbeau Amen to that part 2! : )
This was from one of the few albums in which they actually played their own instruments----and it flopped big.
Who told you they didn't play?
This was one of their worst songs, although they had tons of great stuff. Long Live Paul Revere and the Raiders 1960 - 2014, 54 years of rocking insanity
Agreed--one of their worst. Dull.
paul looks bored there he doesnt looks really into it,
After they'd been completely Dick Clarkafied-compare this to the early
northwest sound music, this is dreck!!!!!!!!!!
Bill Downing I agree with you. This song was on their last album Country Wine however there was better material they could have released such as the song Take A Stand with slide guitar
