StarCraft 2: 14+ Barracks Reaper!

- Reapers are good units. However, usually we only see 1, maybe 2 in a professional match of StarCraft 2. In this game uThermal decides to make a couple more... Just a few more... And he's serious about it.

Lol "LOOK AT THESE SPLITS! How you gonna surround that with zerglings or hit them with banelings??"
*army gets surrounded and wiped out by zerglings and banelings*
Was just about to comment that haha
With a-move, apparently
Yea and then he won the game 60 seconds later
Yes, but he lost every single bane/ ling in doing so, instead of three banes to wipe out all of those marines without splits.
Meanwhile he lost a base, 20ish drones, 5 queens, and 2 extractors to the reaper. He basically lost 90% of his units in 3 seconds having to rebuild it all without that third base against a 14 rax terran that had another wave ready and rallied.
@@lucifer6966 still he lost all the marines there, it's a fact
-"How you gonna kill it, it's too good!"
-literally kills it
-well look at other stuff that happened elsewhere
What? What kind of shitty defense is that? Fact is the split does not save the marines and lowko assuming that it's not gonna happen then for it to happen 5 sec later is hilarious, quite being a salty boi man
Alphastar controlling the Reapers
that will be fun to watch
It'll be like the 1812 Overture, but with grenades and jetpacks instead of cannons.
Alphastar's APM cap might be too low for professional moves
@@Invizive Try watching the video of Alphastar on this channel, the stalker micro is crazy
@@salvadorez8675 I watched it. Yeh, he has great moves, but something more "action-heavy" like juggling three immortals AND continuing proper macro is hindered by APM cap.
Even if you don't consider unimpactful moves of human players their APM during serious fights is much bigger, Alpha has a handicap due to inability to "spike" like this
@Ander P the APM restriction was not equal to professional players' performance, it was lower.
I was arguing that the bot was in worse position "physically"
uthermal: how many reapers are enough
Mira Han: yes
more likely "no"
Mira's reapers are so good vs structures
Alpha Star is watching your videos confirmed !
I would assume uthermal got the idea from alpha star in their test matchups.
@@JanSauerwein sounds reasonable!
ruclips.net/video/FWbVseLiopw/видео.html
Incorrect. AlphaStar needs not study a human. It advanced further and faster by playing itself with no human input.
2:10 my cat is offended, he expecting an apology video soon
Ah yes, reapers! The infamous scouting convicts with jet packs waiting to kill our workers. We have dismissed this claim.
*I should go intensifies*.
Well if you put it like that...
Liquidthermy clearly went with blue lasers. He's controlling the Reapers well.
ZERG LIFE IS NOTHING BUT A GENETIC MUTATION, AN ACCIDENT. YOUR LIVES ARE MEASURED IN SECONDS AND MINUTES. YOU WITHER, AND DIE. WE ARE ETERNAL. THE PINNACLE OF EVOLUTION AND EXISTENCE. BEFORE US, YOU ARE NOTHING. YOUR EXTINCTION IS INEVITABLE.
@@Deolrin Ha. This is hilarious when you apply fridge logic and consider what happens after Amon wins in the WoL vision.
Really brings out the banelings' balloony qualities when they jump up from the reapers' grenades and then pop.
it looks soo adorable when they're in the air and spread their wittle limbs to land back down.
I remember time when reapers were destroying buildings.
2:08
AlphaStar: (chuckles) I'm in danger
Unless Alphastar uses that against humans.
Yeah. How cool would it be if alphastar determined mass reaper is the best strat. Uthermal did it first
Thanks for another great video!
It’s been great listening to all of your commentary, strategies, and break downs.
Personally, I do enjoy the few moments you take to pause and go over things that happen simultaneously! Many times in your videos I also watch the mini-map and think “ah, yeah. Those infested terrains must have been attack moving while the Phoenix’s were just “moving””
I personally wouldn’t mind a pause here and there while you give us a glimpse of Runby’s, or other little tricks the players are using to get ahead
Lowko, if you hover your mouse upon the attck icon of the unit it will mention “number of attacks: _” there you multiply the attack (damage + upgrade) * number of attacks = damage per attack. Reaper has 2, battlecruiser has 5 or 6
I heard that cats are banned from starcraft because they just walk across the keyboard and boom... 200 supply
Yup, true story. But my 2 cats watch Lowkos videos with me!
ZirJo My cats love to sleep in front of my I Phone when I try to watch something with them!🤣🤣
But they are not banned from watching it.
@@shiramineayaka hahahaha they always want to be the center of attention xD :3
@ZirJo Of course!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🐱
Oh I haven't seen mass reaper do so well in such long time. This was very fun to watch!
Aah reaper push.
Didn't see that since Wings of Liberty.
Husky used to show off builds with all racks. I used to love this build in my.low league play
why aren't we talking about how perfect lowko's facial structure is, dem cheek bones contour perfect af
"Do not forget to smile."
Appreciate the reminder 😀
Thank you for this one Lowko. I have watched this numerous times. GNARLY!
Terran: Reapers
Protoss: Stalker
Zerg: ... Mutas?
Imo, Zerg : Queens
@@inperangua we're talking about in and out, pokey pokey, ranged and very mobile units. The Queen is the polar opposite of that. Mutas would be the closest, as it's flying capabilities provide the same function as jet pack and blink, essentially. Reapers and stalkers, however, are more cost-effective, early game units that have greater potential for healing (reaper heal, stalker shield). You cant make 2-3 queens and rush a base and net value from it 2-3 minutes in. You cant do that with mutas either. So Zerg simply does not have this type of early-game unit; lings are the fastest, but the fragility and lack of range puts it in a different category.
@@stevenhetzel6483 I on the other hand saw the question as early game unit that gives you extreme amount of value if your micro is on point.
@@stevenhetzel6483 What about burrowed roaches?
@@ethanhalloran7562 requires lair, takes longer to get established than stalkers or reapers. Vulnerable to detection and slow when burrowed. Might as well go mutas, but therein lies my first point... Not to day they arent powerful, or don't have their place, it's simply further proof that Zerg doesn't hsve the same level of ranged, agile harass that the other races do.
Prepare for a reaper spam in the ladder bois.
im pretty sure the only hyper units zerg has are muta and to a much lesser extent zerglings, protoss has the most, stalker, oracle, pheonix, even warp prism with speed, and to a lesser extent dt's with blink. How I identify hyper units, is a unit that if controlled perfectly should never die unless to another hyper unit.
The problem with reaper grenades is that if you mismicro, you'll blow your own teeth off and then you're left to choose between a painfully awkward mech transition or bio w/o combat shields.
Nice to see you cast some weird games, though. That's usually Winter's call.
If you mismicro, you’ll lose your games. Reapers just punish you more for mismicro. When you do use them effectively, they are incredible
I love when he said attack move was the method so true haha Zerg
Second time watching this cast. It is an awesome analysis of a very unusual strategy. Your style and enthusiasm enriches this game to make it super awesome.
dont know if that was intentional, but throwing the granades in a way that they hit your own reapers and bounce them away from each other seems effective at preventing the zergling surrounds even more
Zergs are always on top of your reapers, so you need to throw them on top of your reapers for it to properly work
even if there's a good gap, they move so fast that they can close in in the time the throwing animation is done
ByuN made really good use of bouncing front reapers back with grenades back in the day.
“Really sexy grenades.” Lol Lowko
I love your videos... and I have never commented this quickly on a video.
Great game & video. What a rare find! Mass reapers in 2019
"look at these splits, look at these splits!"
*entire army gets destroyed in 0.5 seconds*
zerg don't need a unit with unlimitied micro potential , they have units with unlimited free unit potential like swarmhost.
That's provided you make it to tier 2 with enough resources to push swarmhosts.
@@Xgourouneitor blink stalkers are also tier 2
@@schamarchie Haven't played in a really long time but isn't blink a cyber-core upgrade?
@@Xgourouneitor no it's in the twilight council with needs a cybernetic core. I think that makes it tier 2 , but I'm not 100% sure.
@@schamarchie they don't have unlimited potential, the only micro you can do on them is chosing where they land, then they land and they attack, with little range and while being extremely slow
excellent play. always fun watching thermy play
Now this is the kind of game I love to watch!
That was absolutely insane to watch
Really cool vid! Thank you!
Very funny one. I didn't expect it to be a pro game when I saw the title :) Next time I play as Terran against a Zerg on this map I'm gonna try it even though I'm only gold as Terran.
I'm gold too, been doing it for a couple months and it works on most maps at our level and against all the races.
So don't care too much about the map/race
@@arthurserra1413 ok tanks mate :) I tried it against Zerg, he went roach x) I lost :)
Nice one! Love your content.
I think you missed the era where 3 rax reaper was a legit strategy. It's not a meme. I mean, it was nerfed with the grenade nerf but it still can be used!
ByuN is a legend because of what he's done with those reapers.
I like these videos, and your insights.
This used to happen every game in WoL, except reapers also has a grenade for buildings that was the fastest killing thing in the game back then.
Pretty cool strategy!
This kind of videos is awesome!
What about Muta micro? Mutas have infinite micro potential, too! I guess AlphaStar will go Mutas, Reapers, and Stalkers all the time :P
muta, warpprism and may be cyclones are units like that
its actually gonna be the roaches with burrow and regen while burrow and every time a roach gets low that specific roach will burrow and heal
Muta infinite micro can only work in ZvT and maybe ZvZ. In ZvP toss can always go mass phoenix, which mutas just die to, provided simillar micro skill.
Isnt alpha star designed to have micro abilities similar to human ones ? I think I heard it is supposed to become really smart but infinite micro would be broken and not fun
@@UrGhostGaming Sort of. The initial versions had a cap on average APM, but that just meant that it would go for minutes with nearly 0 apm and then spike up into thousands whenever there was a fight. Newer versions seem to have a more realistic cap on APM/EPM.
“I love it when a plan comes together”
This strategy was actually used against me a few days ago and now I know where it came from..
I remember mass reaper in wings of liberty was a thing. Starcraft was so simple back then haha
or void rays.
When I read 14 Barracks Reapers, I thought it was a viewer submitted Platinum game 😅
🤣🤣🤣
Lowko, I'm an animal and I've been watching your videos for almost two years. Cheers!
♪one of these things is not like the others, one of these things is not the same♪
Mass Reaper used to be a thing during Wings of Liberty, we've come full circle.
Vincent Alucard well yeah but that’s because they had that building attack that would snipe crazy fast.
For those wondering: 30 damage per attack, it was previously their grenade. 10 reapers took down hatcheries in 6 seconds, give or take.
@@stevenhetzel6483 They also 2-shot workers if I remember correctly
Time is a flat circle, This was a strat back in WoL for a long time on like metropolis /lost temple until they buffed queen and roach range.
I'd say zerg unit with the most micro potential is the nydus worm. The worm is static but it can swallow low health units (or low energy queens), and you can technically swallow low health roaches, pull them out on the other end of the worm and burrow them to heal then bring them back full life. Obviously the worm can get sniped though.
But yeah aside from that I guess zergling + baneling in a mirror matchup because being melee isn't a problem for micro when your opponent is melee too.
Yeah, still surprisingly effective strategy, never gets old.
Reaper damage is 4 +1 per upgrade, for each gun. So 8 +2 per upgrade total. Scales very well against Zerglings
However, armor upgrades will cut the damage by 1 for each gun as well, meaning you have to lead in upgrades to get an advantage of that
@@alsash1658 Ah yeah, I'm stupid lol
after the reaper style, it becomes a number game
thx lowko
2:10 I dont know how many of us are robots
Alpha star: he knows too much
Now zerg knows how terran feels vs mass muta harass xP
Reaper madness!
There is, there was and there will always be only one REAPER MAN/GOD...
Byun!
THE ONE MAN ARMY!
Had an old strategy before the Widow Mine invisibility nerf where I'd go half-and-half Reaper/Widow Mine with constant pressure. Transition into Thor/Mine or add on Vikings and Libs if the game started getting too long (Infestors and Lurkers are a pain in particular). It worked pretty well for a little while. Might try it again if the Mine invisibility @Armory tech goes through.
6:17 psst! You can hover your mouse cursor over the weapon box when you select a single Reaper ;)
Wait do you have the original video where you casted with Reynor and Lambo? I can't find it on youtube
Here: www.sc2links.com/match/?match=50714
Can i watch the original casted game?
Before I started watching uthermal videos I thought he’s a super serious pro player then there’s him mining salt with pf rushes
now this its the terran swarm
The title made me think this was viewer submitted until I read the description.
Roach burrow might work as your early game micro zerg unit. You should be able to get a lot of value if you play well.
i guess the equivalant would be roach burrow heal micro. but i wonder how well that would actually play out.
I kinda figured this was gunna happen one day... Reaper Revolution has begun.
ROACHES can micro real well, with tunneling claws basically acting like a SLOW blink ablity and healing when burrowed
i remember watching liquidTLO using the same strat back in 2011 or so
Even 1 reaper could drive me crazy
Best Starcraft Commentator mainly because he's funny lol.
... but what happens if BYUN would do this?!
He would have crush the zerg with only 6 of them ^^, he like heavy reaper, but with this meta he will be dominating with that strat
@@Mlork972 lol what meta are you talking about, reaper were stronger before
They get nerfed
Reapers got nerfed, just bcuz of Byun :))
@@TamLe-bj2yl Precisely
The closest "unlimited micro" unit Zerg have is probably Mutas. Maybe Lurkers once you have the burrow speed upgrade.
I was literally just thinking the other day, “why don’t terrans make more reapers?”
True story
Fear the Reaper, Man!
I remember Catz doing a major reaper play waaay back(husky casted game). I think the reapers hit harder then though.
I thought the thumbnail was a new kind of Carolina reaper pepper
i like corner lowko
Better with a medivac ?? :)
They heal ?
Maybe add some bunker near cc to defend, reapers can go in...
Why the Zerg player do not use Roach?
Likely it would've just been a drain on time and resources. Roaches alone aren't going to answer mass reapers when dealing with someone who can micro super well. About all he could do was defend with queens and use ling speed to go for surrounds and maybe push an attack or two if enough survived. All this delaying until he could tech up to mutas but as lowko said repeatedly, dudes a god with reaper micro so he kept Zerg on their heels all game.
14 Rax could mass produce Marauders T just needs a few more refineries
Think the zerg wasn't totally expecting him to stay with reapers for that long and was looking for a reaper end to transition to droning stage with resources, but i mean how many people think a players goal is to win with reapers. If this strat gets more use widely people will find a way to counter it more. However this wasnt something he probably was used to seeing and as it was said roaches by themselves was not the answer. maybe with roach speed but could of been dangerous diverting resources to upgrade them.
Would love to see & hear that 3some commentary in a future video
He zerged the zerg
imagine the reapers say "fire in the hole" every time they cast grenade. kekekekekeke
Mutalisk might be the Zerg-unit with infinite value, if you have infinite micro capabilities?
Lowko, you were asking what units from Zerg have unlimited micro potential... and I think the answer might be mutalisks, or isn`t it??
Wouldn't morphing one or two fast dropolords work out better than bane speed tho?
Reaper max rush! My fav on certain maps but easily countered.
Peter Dao this works against Zerg players that like to stay on ling tech way too long.
Peter Dao lol what’s the counter jw. I lost to a Terran microing his reapers super well when I was Zerg a few weeks ago. Super annoying
By the numbers, boys.
Ah Reapers, we have dismissed that claim.
how are those group of reapers keep those reapers behind them from burning up?
Idk dude, even though there is money on the line, it's homestory cup! You're supposed to have fun, and uThermal has a history of memeing there. If I'm not mistaken he even played as protos last year.
This strat has become more popular lately. If you watched the WCS Spring NA Open Qualifier, RuFF does this against MCanning in the Winner's bracket in the round of 16 (where MCanning plays Toss). It is harder to do against Zerg because Zerg simply produces units faster, but good micro (and fast +1 infantry weapons) can overcome that. The weapons upgrade is critical because this adds +2 damage per shot, and Reapers also fire quickly. So with +1 attack, you go from needing 6 reapers to 1 shot a zergling to 4 reapers.
I wonder if UThermal could have snowballed quicker and had a decisive advantage in game 1 if he got reactors for his first 2 barracks from the beginning. That way, he could have started to mass marines sooner while still pumping out as many reapers as his gas would allow.
And one spine crawler would have deterred this...
All these strategies, and I always have the best luck tossing out a ton of fully upgraded marines with healers backing them. Nothing beats a metric crap-ton of guns going off at once. :)
Wouldnt the roach with burrow be the micro unit for the zerg?
Now we need Pro game with Probius rush
infestors, if spellcasters count would be like the stalker or the reaper or maybe mutas
if Crooked Sam become a Reaper Commander, its underrated
Roaches can be heavily micro'd when they have burrow and tunneling claws
Only issue I'd say is they are too vulnerable once it's known that's what they're doing. Terrans will just scan and pick up free kills unless you unburrow and toss will either mass observers so you can't hide anything or drop a few cannons around the bases so you can't sneak up on bases. The biggest factor is the burrow, reapers or blink stalkers can kite and rack up some kills as they retreat, forward or backward, if I know your roaches are there then it's free kills until you bring them above ground.
