I recommend the visual novel. It's kinda murder mystery psychological horror-esque, but the true themes of Higurashi are friendship and empathy. It's pretty much a story about how we're all human and how there is reason to what we do.

Okay an explanation of this anime series.
The first two openings were from the first two seasons: Higurashi When They Cry, and Higurashi Kai. Which we call the original series. It adapted the story of the visual novels fully. So this is a complete story.
OP 3 is from a 5 episode OVA: Higurashi Rei, which adapts an epilogue visual novel made after the main visual novel series was completed.
OP 4 which is strangely the more wholesome upbeat one, is from another OVA series: Higurashi Kira. This one is legit a light hearted and fanservice one. Its not canon to the main story at all, so the upbeat and lighthearted nature is genuine.
The reason there is a massive time difference between those previous ones and Higurashi Gou in 2020, is cos Higurashi for the longest time was over. There was nothing else after that. The main story concluded at Kai or the epilogue arc with Rei.
Higurashi Gou is a new sequel to the main story, hence the return to the creepiness and horror. And Higurashi Sotsu (2021) after that which is the conclusion to this sequel series.

Higurashi is a wonderfully human story that more should experience in my opinion. If you're not fond of horror or grotesque violence, I'd stay away from the anime. Most of it is given in narration in the visual novels so that would be the best option. And yes its also a murder mystery.
Fun fact: The creator (Ryukishi07) worked as a social worker/civil servant and alot of his experiences influenced his writing.
Abit of the plot is that Higurashi is set in June 1983, the rural village Hinamizawa which Keiichi Maebara the male protagonist moves to. When he quickly becomes fast friends with his classmates, all seems well. However it all takes a horrific turn when the village's annual watanagashi festival arrives which is dedicated to worship of the guardian god Oyashiro. Keiichi learns that previous years on the night of the festival has brought murders and disappearances. The further he digs the deeper he falls, as he begins to question who and what he can trust.
The story (especially in the later half of the series) delves alot into the history of Japan post world war 2. It goes into themes of abuse and trauma. Commentary on the poor treatment of children and failings of the child support institutions, influence of military and government politcs on the creation of biological weapons, misuse of medical ethics, the negative effects of religious superstition on a community.. and so much more. Its a truly interesting piece of fiction that Ryukishi obviously has alot of passion for. He definitely has alot to say about Japan's history.

Higurashi is a great series, both in anime and visual novel form. I would say to watch the anime first if reading isn't your strong point because Higurashi doesn't have interactive part like other one so it can't be boring if you're not used to. But the VN is better in its story form because a lot was skiped into the anime and the feeling isn't the same. The anime can feel rush in comparaison.
Higurashi is cut into arcs : 8 for the VN, adapted in 2 seasons, and 3 side stuff that aren't necessary to understand the series. Rei, opening 3, is more of an epilogue leaning into some aspect of the VN while Kira is mostly for fun, hence why the opening is so happy looking. As for Gou and Sotsu, the last 2, it was add as a remake of the original but actually was a sequel to it, trying to expand upon Uminkeo, another work of Ryukishi, the creator of the VN.
I would say it's more psychological than horror but there are some graphic stuff that can hurt you.Not musch but it's better to be aware of it.

There's an hour-long video with nearly every When They Cry op, both for Higurashi, Umineko and what is released from Ciconia for anyone interested, just missing a few if I'm not mistaken...

The visual novel is generally better, but the anime is not that bad either.
Main problem with the anime is that way didn't use the soundtrack of the visual novel.
i recommend checking the soundtrack out^^
There are also visual novel openings that are great

You really gotta appreciate the Japanese sense of humor for naking a seemingly innocent looking intro.

I wonder why everyone's running to the left in those OPs what's up with that? 😅
Anyway great reaction, the anime is a bit messy due to the first 2 seasons being a very low budget adaptation of a ~30-40h long visual novel with very dense narration. Still, I can't recommend enough people to watch higurashi (or better read the VN if motivated enough since it's definitely the better way to experience this story).
It's by far one of the most influential visual novel/anime ever made, and still extremely popular to this day in Japan. It's a very subversive story that breaks multiple codes of narration in a brilliant manner and tackles subjects only few other anime would dare to explore. A must watch for any anime fans imo
