- Its that time of year again. The days are getting longer and warmer. The California Halibut are on the move into the SF Bay. I cant wait any longer to get out there and try my chance at a Halibut. Lots of smaller ones in the area, hoping to get a keeper halibut. I tried a new "bait" trolling for the halibut. The krippled Herring and it produced!
I had two friends with me so I wanted to treat them to my halibut sandwich. Check out how I make the halibut sandwich and make sure to try it out yourself.

Happy to hear you enjoyed the video, yeah tides are very important for halibut fishing, the trick is learning which spots to fish on the outgoing and which on the incoming. Still learning, always will be, watching the party boats, you learn they move around as the tide does. The fish have different habits depending on tide and location they are at.
You ripped the tail of that first one pretty bad Chris with that net, even yhe second one as well. I know you are great fisherman. Been following you for a little bit. We all have responsibility but you more than me since you influence a heck of a lot of people. Keep it up tho. I enjoy the contents.
His net got a pretty small holes, I don’t think the cuts are from his net maybe those fish caught by previous anglers.

I caught a bluefin once that was over 180 pounds so I ended up having so much meat even after I gave away a shit load. I grilled up a lot one day and ended up with leftovers that I smashed up and made into tuna salad. It was actually enjoyed it more then any other way I’ve prepared tuna. People sleep on making fish salad out of all different types of fish but I promise if the fish is firm and flaky it will make a great salad.
Yeah it is surprising people only do it with tuna from a can. Exactly so many fish can be enjoyed this way. I even do it with salmon. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment... i need a blue fin soon lol

Chris! where can we get the crippled herring at? you ever need a body, holler at me! im out there in my 17' tracker every weekend, mostly solo with my dog, i try to stay around other boats for safety reasons but love to meat stack and give half to my grandma every single time

Yeah I need to do better with the smalls. Generally I am on top of it. First trip of the year, two friends on the boat, got excited but no excuses for that. The 19" should not be netted, the boarder line keeper is hard to flip into a boat compared to a kayak. I got to get it up at least 3ft. My net is rubber with 1/4 holes so hopefully it minimizes any damage. Thanks for watching

Just a Friendly heads up, don’t net them if your not 100% sure they are over 22 inches, that tail rot is no joke.

Is there big differ between crippled herring and crippled chovie? The weight you use is 16oz in the bay?
yes there is a difference in the head on the krippled herring and chovy. I use 16oz weight when trolling in the bay. That is good for 15-30ft of water trolling. Thanks for watching

Great day man looking to get out there myself. Only thing I’d say is maybe just shake off smalls on side of the boat not worth the tail split
Hi Luke, thanks for watching! Yeah I need to do better with the smalls. First trip of the year, two friends on the boat, no excuses though. The 19" should not be netted. The 21-22" is borderline. Thats why I have a rubber net with 1/4 inch holes. Its easier for the kayaks to lift them up, on the boat I got to lift it about 3ft with the rail, gonna lose keepers if I dont net the boarder line ones.
Hey man, how big of a boat do you need to fish in the Golden gate bridge and that area in general? Is a 16ft boat enough? Of course, I would obviously stay away from bad conditions. Thanks.
What type of boat/hull? Gotta have a bow that cuts through waves. I got a 13ft aluminum that’ll be fine out there. Also water/wind conditions very important. Shoot Guys go out in kayaks man...just gotta be smart right
My boat is a 20' and if your serious about fishing saltwater I wouldnt go much smaller, There are some 18' models that would be fine too. Like the other comment said, comes down to how the boat is designed. I am sure some 14' boston whalers would do fine. Just stay away from boats designed for freshwater like my lund, the wiring corrodes a lot faster, they just arent made for saltwater hitting the boat. Thanks for watching
Thomas pickles I got a 18’ aluminum hull that’s been stripped down, have all the console and glass and the front wrap around bench, on a trailer, with a 85hp outboard that needs the lower unit swapped(which I have all the parts for as well)... no paperwork on boat or trailer, but I pulled it all out of a field where it was sitting for the last 20 years. Boat has no leaks as of the October rains we had. $800 for all of it as it sits... definitely an ocean worthy boat, has a bayrunner type bow. In Sacramento, tires hold air...
Also got my 13’, ready to go fishing right now, floats like a cork, 25hp, FF, rod holders, electric trolling motor, console, need to get rid of that too, $3000.

The video it has an 18hp, now it has a 25, I have a 33hp that it loves too, but the trailer don’t like that motor on the boat... this boat has paperwork

yeah its a great way to use leftover halibut or cook it up fresh. If you like tuna salad its a guarantee you will like this. The stove is Coleman Gas Camping Stove | 4 in 1 Portable Propane Cooking System. Works great!

weight used and how deep do you let it sink? does it touch the bottom? trying to hook on my first hali
your trying to troll as close to bottom as possible. Generally boats run 16oz for depths 15-30'. So get your slow speed going, look at your baits presentation in water, make sure your bait rolls, then drop it to bottom slowly. hope that helps

Thanks Robert. I never look at my speed because the water is always moving on the bay. If your going into the current you probably moving .5-1 mph. When you are with the current it could be as fast as 2-4mph. Thats why I always look at my bait in the water. I try and fish parallel with the shore line. When I make a 180 and go the other direction, thats when I check my lines and adjust.

I noticed the net cut the first fishes tail

The split was down the middle, been trying to figure out if it was from my net because the small holes make it seem to me hard for that to happen. Not denying we caused that but I have seen fish lifted into kayaks with split tails from previous encounters. Thanks for watching

If they are short don't net them. Look at the first fish and the split tail from the net.
Yoyo, not trying to be an ass, but you should consider NOT netting those halibut unless you're sure it's a keeper size. If you look at the tails, the net rips them apart. Please think about it, and let's all help to preserve the fishery.

You all need to do a better job of taking care of your fish. You should never net the shorts. You damage the tail, but I am sure others have told you that already. No bueno guys!!!
