That’s a tough question. Wheels are about 350 apiece, tires 185. It’s been a couple years since I’ve done a lift but I think they were about $1800 depending on who’s lift and what details you select. If you add running boards and installation for it all I’d guess about $6000. I think if you want all the options in the trail edition (it’s loaded with stuff) then its worth it. Quigley subframe lift and some nip and tuck I reckon … but the real mystery is how exactly is a 245/75-16 tire going to fit in the normal spare tire pocket without a shoe horn.
That’s a great question! I wonder if they opened things up. I was on the AMA yesterday. They said they opened up the front fender well (pinch weld modification) to fit the tire.
The wireless hotspot feature is useless. We got it in our 2020 van thinking we could use it to connect to the van remotely when it was in storage, but it shuts off after a short time to conserve battery power. Maybe they changed it for the new model year, but I doubt it.
Haven’t seen any mention of the cost difference yet. Does it really make sense to go with the trail option vs doing the upgrades yourself to a cheaper van?
My sprinter passenger van came with about 10 locations where I can charge my iPad that are in the UBC format. why would you even need a 400 W inverter for anything? It’s too small when it’s not too big
The 400 watt inverter is not particularly impressive. 3000 watt pure sine wave with room for additional would be awesome. If ford really wanted to blow peoples minds, they would develop or source a push up roof option behind the cab area for the mid roof version of Transit. Lifting a vehicle creates a problem When trail driving into many more remote areas. A way to get that headroom back once parked at the camp site would greatly increase the desirability of the mid roof version.. Otherwise, the customer is just camping out of a slightly more comfortable version of the previous Econoline.
I have a feeling the big RV manufacturers will develop something around the platform. I still think independent builders (like AVC) will continue to be more innovative and push the interior options. As for battery, I’m glad Ford didn’t actually do anything real. We’d all most likely have to replace it anyway so better off not paying for things that will end up in the scrap bin.
@@TobyCostaRica that's because they are more enthusiastic about F series, inside the company, than they are regarding the Transit. The Transit being a European originated design. That exact mindset is why Ford has walked away from so many market segments. Taurus didn't fail in the market. Ford milked it and then ignored it until there wasn't anything left to save. Rinse and repeat with all the other vehicle lines except for the Probe, Festiva-Aspire and the contour, which were either badge engineered Mazda's or in house imports.
Matt, did your confirmation email from Ford say " 16" silver steel wheels with exposed lugnuts" ? I took your order form in and only deviated the color, and happen to spot that on my confirmation email...
I don’t think he said the rim is wider, I think he said they adjusted the offset with the wheel design. If you look at the current AWD wheel they look like dually wheels. I’ve reached out to aftermarket manufacturers and encouraged them to follow suit. (Not that they take notes from me)
I’ll bet the dealer asking price is jacked up way over the MSRP on this van like every other new vehicle now. I wouldn’t even consider buying a new vehicle for at least 1 1/2 years or until the ridiculous markups subside.
I haven’t seen any Ford dealers marking up orders. I have seen vans that moved from special order to inventory get marked up. Ford corporate has been cracking down big time since your view is a common thought of the industry and people are rightfully upset. Now when I recently looked for a Sprinter I did see a local dealer asking for 20k over msrp. I’m really hoping things straighten out soon!
Hi, you mentioned adding the Auxiliary heat/ac w/out controls (which now seems to have been rolled into the included trail package because it got dropped from my order summary) I'm wondering what type of upfit heater are you using that benefits from this option?
You appear to use the terms “looks” and “aesthetics” a lot. If you are planning on creating a very functional off road van with superior off road upgrades for your build , is the added expense of a Trail Version a better option than a more basic cargo version with selected options? Thanks
If you want the best off road capable van I would get a Quigley 4x4 transit. The trail version is a good start in a factory available package. Adding an aftermarket lift and tires would functionally be the same in my opinion. Vancompass, transitoffroad, and quigley all do lifts for the transit. I think half of the trail edition stuff is more looks than function, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad, it’s good to understand what you’re really getting.
Exactly! I become concerned when the marketing people start using terms like "appearance". Appearance doesn't mean shit in Moab or the interior of Alaska. Where, the reason that you have a rifle storage place that is easily reached is because the wildlife you came to observe might try to make a lunch of you!
@@AVCRIG if Ford really wanted to be innovative they would put an air suspension on it like the Land Rover, believe the old Mercury version of the Explore had air suspension so they do know what it is.
So happy you did this video! I'm really trying to figure out what mods void the factory warranty on a regular transit and other vans. Is this the reason they added the factory dual alternators? What other mods to a regular van void the factory warranty? What do you think is a good price for the Trail? Do you think we will only get MSRP at this point?
I think prices will be silly till the chip and parts situations smooth themselves out. There will be a return to normalcy eventually. At this rate Ford can’t build them fast enough so why not keep raising prices. It’s unfortunate for us(all of us consumers) but the only thing to do is wait. As far as warranty goes that’s a tricky one. When connecting to the Ford systems we just stick to the sanctioned connection points and build our own systems in the back. Drivetrain is another story. Probably best to ask a lift manufacturer. I heard that going over 245/75/16 could void warranty on something but I think it may have just been people talking out their 🍑
@@AVCRIG Can I even buy/build a Ford Transit Trail right now? I went online to build and order and it seems like only the basic Transit is available to order.
Should have added this to my comment yesterday but the one thing Ford could have done mechanically that would have made more difference than anything from a DIY/aftermarket versus OEM standpoint is relocated the rear shock mounts. Sure they can be trimmed or relocated aftermarket but for Ford to have provided an OEM solution would have been a lot better than including a tow hitch which anyone could do. The shock mounts aren't as much trouble off road as they look like they would be but among the potential van life or adventure van crowd perception is reality. They see the low hanging fruit and assume it will be an issue. To revise this would give a better perception and allow Ford to claim a 1" increase in ground clearance as they do sit approximately 1" lower than the rear diff.
Hi again. I have my Trail ordered but at just under $75k, I'm starting to wonder is it really worth it to start with the Trail if I'm going to do a professional build? I see the benefits of a DIY. Do you have any sense yet of what if any cost savings would be passed on to the customers cost if they start out with a Trail? Thanks!!
It’s all in exterior stuff. Aside from the factory swivels it seems like all the options are exterior parts. For us it doesn’t change the interior buildout cost or options. If you plan to do a lift and tires then it’s probably a good start.
Yes! I love barn doors. My dad had a Chevy van when I was little and complained about the slider forever when we replaced it with a club wagon. I definitely with they offered a barn door on the MR/HR
I doubt that they will ever offer them. The entire side is one stamping, minus the front fender and doors. Build variations are a mortal sin in manufacturing.
According to everything I've found they added a body lift, not a suspension lift. No way an OEM is going to use a 2.25 inch spacer lift on the suspension when they can have longer springs and a diff drop done in a couple of afternoons.
I really don't understand how ordering a van works. When I google this, I get extremely complicated forms and information that makes absolutely no sense to me.
looks great. where can i get one? oh, i can't? don't even know how long until i can? why is ford pushing this so hard when it's not even available and why are companies shilling for ford when this thing is a mirage???
I think the industry is just messed up. If you watch the news a lot is going on with Ford (not necessarily stoked on it all). I do think there’s a pretty big disconnect between Ford Marketing and the actual production lines. On the recent AMA the engineer thought you could order them as of that day. I think it’s better to not take orders at all rather than cancel orders taken.
@@TexasLocalProduce Ford called me back yesterday and they opened it up again. I was able to order one last night. However a few options are no longer available like the 360 camera.
400 watt inverter sums it up. They didn’t listen to anybody. who asked for a lousy 400 W inverter for Pete’s sake. Nobody. Jeep wranglers and the Toyota FJ cruiser which I haven’t made in years both had comparable inverters years ago
It’s just a mix of all the stuff they have been putting in the vans for years. The only new stuff are the exterior options. All the inside stuff is the same as they have always done.
@@AVCRIG I suspected they wouldn’t fix the fact that only on the Teansit does the roof keep curving for almost two feet behind the driver’s backrest making overhead cabinets in that area untenable. There passenger vans also only come with side airbags in the back whether you want them or not also interfering with overhead cabinets depth to the point of being useless.
I wouldn’t recommend building a passenger into a camper. If you want lots of seats it won’t make a great camper. If you want a safe ride for passengers they make a perfect Van for that. The Crew is a good compromise. Seats and bags in the front half. As for cabinets in the front portion of the van take a look at what we do. I think we have a pretty good solution for the HR cargo.
I thought there was also news about how they we’re making interior builds easier. More holes? I dunno. Seems like a marketing hype trim. A little jealous about factory lift and 245’s but that’s about it.
I think we’ll see more info come out over the next few weeks/months as the media gets ahold of the vans. I am curious about interior changes (since that’s what we do) but I don’t expect much.
In theory yes, but the order bank for Transit is closed for now. I have a feeling they will open it back up. I’d reach out to your dealer and at least get on a wait list.
My take, fellow upfitters, the TRAIL is not a Sprinter killer or promaster KILLER, Not yet : 1-Not redesign involved 2-Marketing cosmetic red lipstick...still a cargo van We need a true redesign oem camper van ready for upfitters: 1-better suspension oem, like liquid springs in the back for many needs and desires such as , better departur angle when needed on the spot etc. 2-AC ducted to the back running from the engine(not a one ton mini split), same with floor heating system, get the most of that powerfull engine. Or a total redesign of HVAC system optimized for upfitterd of class B+. 2-side flares fittings ready to install after market flares. 3-the current interior structure is optimized for cargo missions. Hence, redesign interior structure (at least 10 different types and options for upfitters) to optimize installation ...total redesign of interior cealing structure for drop down accesories such as Showers, drapes, kitchens, tables, storage, beds etc. Redesign the floor interior and exterior for things like, oem shower trays, water tanks(plural) that could fit in every unusable hidden space. 4-computer module hacking access to make the AWD more off-roaf capable such as sustainable silp diff. etc 5-detachable or option not to order the backdoors (cargo doors not design for upfitters) to install our own back design set up, just imagine....Jesus, ala MadMax style designs back there. 5-detachable access pannels on the side for access to all, all utilities(a must have for upfitters). The engine has an access panel, i think. 6-Option of HYBRID pronto, A NA OR NON TURBO to be serviced easier worldwide. 7-make the Transit trail lighter by 750 kilos. 8- 100 different options -Ford, if i may suggest, make a van design for upfitters...to have a true canvas to work on. All these for a price of 35k msrp, then u will have a true Sprinter and Promaster Killer.
Be realistic! All that purpose built variation for $35 grand? Plus the option to pick and choose? You don't work in the manufacturing side of the industry that is certain!
@@scottbrown7415 well fellow DIYer and/or upfitter, the BOm, actual bill of material, for a cargo van should be around 20k, enough delta to add options to reach a suggested MSRP of 35k selling direct to upfitters via an upfitter-pool fleet prices program( not popular with retail dealers) Just no space here to give details. But the point is we need a true redesign Transformer Transit Camper OEM, not a cargo OEM with lipstick called the Transit trail.
Keep dreaming. You are being very unrealistic. Everyone should be ecstatic you can get a factory lift/upsize tire package from Ford, designed by Ford and warrantied by Ford.
The folks at Ford really have a stranglehold on RUclips info vids re: the Transit Trail. I had to go through SEVEN vids till I found yours here, that told me what I wanted to know: the van’s so inexpensive because there is NOTHING on the inside! No wonder the Ford folks spread some dead presidents around to get RUclips reviewers to talk about outside features, and not talk about the inside! The only thing good about this is decent outside stuff, but what they DO include…like a 300w inverter (or was it generator?) and a misplaced fan…are essentially useless. Ford and all other manufacturers, step up your game already! 😡

The wireless hotspot feature is useless. We got it in our 2020 van thinking we could use it to connect to the van remotely when it was in storage, but it shuts off after a short time to conserve battery power. Maybe they changed it for the new model year, but I doubt it.
It definitely shuts off after time. I can’t log into my 2022 after it’s been sitting for a week.
Haven’t seen any mention of the cost difference yet. Does it really make sense to go with the trail option vs doing the upgrades yourself to a cheaper van?
I think this would be a good follow up topic.
@@AVCRIG Thanks for the video. the cost today is $12,620, think it's worth the cost rather than adding stuff a la carte and aftermarket?
@@smars if you want all the items on the list then I think so. I’m reserving judgment till we see one in person.
What type of rear ladder it is? OEM Ford? Lookin for exactly the same. Thanks
Looked like an aluminess rear tire carrier/ladder.
My sprinter passenger van came with about 10 locations where I can charge my iPad that are in the UBC format. why would you even need a 400 W inverter for anything? It’s too small when it’s not too big
Agreed. It’s worthless.
What I don’t get is the f150 with the same 3.5 gets a 2.4kw inverter.
@@TobyCostaRica My thought exactly.
Matt, did your confirmation email from Ford say " 16" silver steel wheels with exposed lugnuts" ? I took your order form in and only deviated the color, and happen to spot that on my confirmation email...
I’ll have to look. They have been updated a couple times since then as my dealer adjusted orders for us when the trail came out.
What did you mean about widening the tires or pushing them outwards when the ford guy specified the increase of tire diameter by 2.5"?
I don’t think he said the rim is wider, I think he said they adjusted the offset with the wheel design. If you look at the current AWD wheel they look like dually wheels. I’ve reached out to aftermarket manufacturers and encouraged them to follow suit. (Not that they take notes from me)
Listen around 2:40 timestamp
I'm placing my order and need to clarify if you are suggesting the dual alternators? Thanks!
It depends on your power needs. I don’t find that our system needs them for adequate charging.
@@AVCRIG thanks so much. This video (correction, all your videos) and your replies have helped me tremendously!
Hi, you mentioned adding the Auxiliary heat/ac w/out controls (which now seems to have been rolled into the included trail package because it got dropped from my order summary) I'm wondering what type of upfit heater are you using that benefits from this option?
I don’t like the Aux heat/ AC. We install an Espar heater under the passenger. If we do AC we install a dometic RTX2000
@@AVCRIG thanks!!
I wonder if they will offer a trail version of the cutaway. ?
The hotspot has antenna on roof, might slightly improve signal.
Hats a good point. My daily is a 2019 and it doesn’t have the feature. I’ll test it out in my new/next van.
@@AVCRIG thanks, I’ve talked with Quigley. Waiting on the post 2020 conversion approval.
I mean it's expensive but does come with the 3.5 TT but it looks detuned to 310 which I don't understand because they can get that without a turbo
I didn’t notice that detail. Interesting.
Great Video
Do you have any idea MSRP , heard around $65000 that seems like maybe 15000 compared to regular one
$12,700. I need to get that list published
70k
That’s a great point. I’d love to see a factory shock mount alteration.
@AVCRIG very helpful thanks!!
No
One Upgrade I'd like to see on the Medium/High Roof Transits would be "Barn" Doors for the Side
Totally. I’m very curious to see how they lift the van in person.
I agree. You might be able to retrofit the Ford Trail high lift suspension on an earlier Transit.
This is great Matt!!
Thank you!
Where's the Tesla wall?
I’d love to try one. @musk you out there?
Price nuts
I just went to two different dealership to order one. Apparently you can no longer get a 2023…
What?!?!!
Come on, today is only Jan. 1, 2023!
@@TexasLocalProduce Ford called me back yesterday and they opened it up again. I was able to order one last night. However a few options are no longer available like the 360 camera.
Frame & chassis?
It’s the same construction as the cargo van.
How about auto balancing?
Like auto leveling? RVs offer that but the systems are really bulky.
Maybe they finally moved that rear/cargo wiring harness into the wall cavity 😒
@@getaway_man we should be so lucky!
Is it a 22 foot chassis ?
Are these available to order from Ford?
no, its exclusive dealership price ripoff ofc.
In theory yes, but the order bank for Transit is closed for now. I have a feeling they will open it back up. I’d reach out to your dealer and at least get on a wait list.
Ruggedized? I can't believe that's a real word. 😅
I think I’ve heard it used in regards to military equipment like a laptop or something.
Not only is it a real word… it’s been used for nearly 20 years…
My take, fellow upfitters, the TRAIL is not a Sprinter killer or promaster KILLER, Not yet :
1-Not redesign involved
2-Marketing cosmetic red lipstick...still a cargo van
We need a true redesign oem camper van ready for upfitters:
1-better suspension oem, like liquid springs in the back for many needs and desires such as , better departur angle when needed on the spot etc.
4-computer module hacking access to make the AWD more off-roaf capable such as sustainable silp diff. etc
5-detachable or option not to order the backdoors (cargo doors not design for upfitters) to install our own back design set up, just imagine....Jesus, ala MadMax style designs back there.
8- 100 different options
-Ford, if i may suggest, make a van design for upfitters...to have a true canvas to work on.
All these for a price of 35k msrp, then u will have a true Sprinter and Promaster Killer.
all good points! I don't think we'll ever see a 35k msrp van though
Great thought! Thanks for sharing. I wish they were 35k too. 😩
Idk........I don't see $64,000 worth of van there.
$66k for awd panel van you have to be insane .....buy a ranger tremor for 20k+ less & buy a travel trailer or something
It’s a van thing. You do have a good point though.
Where are the Ranger Tremors that are under 20 grand? And rough terrain capable camper trailers are not inexpensive either
If they only asked us how to build them we would set it straight! 😂
3.5 diesel
Good luck getting one in the next year w/o dealers gouging $10k-15k additional dealer markups. Pass. Wait for the vehicle glut a year from now and under MSRP.
I hope you’re right! We have on in order for sticker. I know Ford corporate is trying to crack down on ridiculous markups.
Oh wow you had some single color custom T-shirts printed up and you act like you’re so well known that I should know what AVC stands for so you must be important
We’ve been building Transits since 2017 here at AVC (adventure vehicle concepts). I’ve built vans under two other shops before I started my own.
AVC RIG just fits on a shirt better (and your search bar). We do a lot more than flash our shirts and bloviate. Watch some of our videos. We offer some pretty good info you might learn a trick or two.

The dual AGM battery is really just to support the vehicle itself. It also comes with the higher amperage CCP and that’s useful for the buildout.

Question? I'm thinking about ordering a Ford 2024 Transit Trail in October. I want a removable second row 3 person seat but this van does not have them. So my question is can you recommend an after market removable second row seat for this van? Most of the time I won't want the seat installed into the van, only when necessary.
Our go to seat is from JMG systems in SoCal. We install them here at AVC but you can find a lot of installers on their website.
