  • On Saturday 16th October 2021, composer and musician Alan Hawkshaw died of pneumonia, two and a half months after suffering a fourth stroke. As well as performing with the Shadows and working with artists such as Olivia Newton-John, Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg and playing keyboard for Cliff Richard, he also was behind some of TV's most well-known theme tunes.
His work "Best Endeavours", originally composed to help promote the Clint Eastwood film Pale Rider, was the long-running theme for Channel 4 News from 1982 onwards; "The Night Rider" heralded the heroics of the Cadbury's Milk Tray Man; "Blarney's Stoned" heralded the arrival of Irish comic Dave Allen as the theme to Dave Allen at Large; and he gave Countdown its now-famous 30-second theme tune, as well as the music for its clock.
The latter is what this video is about, as Channel 4 decided, on Monday 18th October 2021, to introduce that day's edition of Countdown with a tribute announcement to Hawkshaw's work.
    WILLIAM ALAN HAWKSHAW BEM R.I.P.
