I watched 'Return of The King' last night and saw Eowyn run the gamut from gentle, feminine and elegant to utterly badass. She was clearly terrified to go into battle (as any sane person would be) but was determined to fight - which is what true bravery is I think - and ended up killing the Nazgul Witch King. She's a great character, who I appreciate all the more after this two dimensional cardboard cut version of Galadriel.
Yeah that's honestly one of my favorite parts. You can see nothing but pure fear and dread on her face in all of the charges but she still does it. That's true courage and strength.
nope the MOST badass moment was from the fellowship when Arwen had to outrun the nazgul with frodo on the horse...the emotions !i really was like "f@&k yeah girl"
I was watching Robin Hood the other day and Cate plays Marian in it, was surprised that she was just as intimidating as Russel Crowe in some of the scenes, and Russel Crowe happens to be a commanding actor on the big screen, but she held her own.

The galadriel in PJs films is beautiful. When Frodo was near death, she came as an apparition and gives a heartwarming smile and pulls Frodo up to keep going. She is like a beautiful yet terrifying angel. I am missing that from this show.
@@TheL0ngbeard She has become another Captain Marvel type of character that is so far removed from the Galadriel created by Tolkien. Same boring, annoying, one dimensional, and crass female character that we've seen over and over again in recent years. Meh.
What I really hate is the gas lighting. If you want to rewrite Tolkien to fit the current year, then just say so. If you want to just capitalize on the LOTR name to push your message, then JUST SAY SO. But no, they have to insist this is faithful to the lore, and if we disagree, or if we don’t like it, it’s our fault. I’m not to blame for your delusions and incompetence.
I guess they did say so? All those quotes about "reflect the world as it is today" were not subtle. Also ROP doesn't even push the message as hard as most other franchises these days. Many of the changes are just baffling for no reason.
@@alexr6092 They also said every single decision was based on whether if it was faithful to the lore. So which one is it? It's not like they pulled off a genius move and satisfied both conditions.
@@alexr6092 I dunno, they are pushing the feminist agenda pretty hard... every female character is all powerful and wise and don't need no man to open no jar for her thank you very much; and the men are all weak, unlikeable politicians, who just can't handle how wise and empowered the women are. If only the men could realize what the women have known all along everything would be fine but nooooo, the men have fragile egos and weak personalities. Except Halbrand, who will turn out to be evil of course because he's a white man, and Arondir, who is stunning and brave because he's an elf of colour
C'mon man can't make em do that just see it for what it is and then just enjoy what they put out. No one will ever have full rights to make an exceptional LOTR series or movie at this point
Peter Jackson, in his WWI documentary, wanted to bring a contemporary soldiers' ditty to life, so he went out and got honest to goodness Brits to sing the lyrics for his documentary, not wanting to diminish or disguise the song's origins by having Aussies or Kiwis sing it. THAT is professionalism guided by love and respect. You won't get anything like that coming out of California, the center of American ethnocentrism and didactic self-loathing of anything that could ever be described as "white," the color that embodies evil in the mind of these cultural vandals and demagogues more than anything Sauron or Morgoth ever did.
Can't disagree.. Hollywood is the epicenter of this. Sauron could kill the body but he couldn't kill the soul, The kingdoms of men proved that. Hollywood is slowly destroying the American soul and while despising America, they have this weird ethnocentrism that seems to say everyone, everywhere, of European White origins, has to feel the exact same way. They can't even allow Europeans to have their own myths and legends. What I despise most is how they think they have to build women up by tearing men down. That is disgusting. And their hatred for family life and normal sexual relationships. Nuts. I might look up that documentary.. never heard of it. I've always found WWI an interesting topic.
Cate Blanchett has a very intimidating and even somewhat evil looking face, but in LoTR (as in all other films she acts in) she has enough range to be able to deliver softness, compassion and hope just as convincingly as anger, greed and fierceness. She has perfect control over her expressions, just as any good actor is supposed to
Wow. When I heard that reading The Hobbit put the writer off from novels when he was a kid my jaw dropped to the floor. The Hobbit was the book that made me as a kid interested in fantasy novels. I bet he just doesn't read novels, full stop. Not liking The Hobbit as a kid if you like to read is just absurd.
The Hobbit was the first full-length novel I ever read when I was a child. My parents bought a huge artbook that had the full novel in it, along with pictures from the Rankin-Bass animated Hobbit movie. It got me hooked on both fantasy and reading.
Same thing for me too. Not only did 'The Hobbit' spark my interest in fantasy novels, but also my interest in tabletop RPGs in general. Thank you Professor Tolkien!
For real. I had to pause the video and make a comment it was so absurd. This guy is talking about "being forced" to read The Hobbit is wild! I was LUCKY to have the opportunity to read The Hobbit as a kid, and it was the book that moved me from short novellas into actual full-length novels. It was that good. I can't believe that Amazon would even be okay with having somebody with that opinion making a Lord of the Rings show, unless they were deliberately trying to drag the IP down.
Shame on you Disparu. Can't you see how stunning and bold this series is? Clearly this is how Middle Earth is supposed to be represented! If only Tolkien could see this improvement to his work. (There are Amazon drones outside my window. Please send help...)
it's 'Reva' all over again. The actress is terribly miscast since she doesn't have the screen presence to be the character they want her to portray, which results in her being just a cartoon character Whether the director is constantly telling her 'resting bitch face' or that just the limits of her range, i have no idea... but in the end a failure is a failure
The problem with the Kubrick Stare is that is traditionally only done once to show change in perspective or personality, when done in every scene just shows a lack of character development and broken idea of personality.
I don't understand what the hell these people hate about Tolkien's writing so badly that they want to piss on it like this. The dark lord was directly defeated by a couple of hobbits and his right hand man was killed by a woman (with the help of another hobbit). None of those people were warriors and its a very inspiring story. They didn't get where they went by insulting Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, and every other warrior man they saw and have every scene written to belittle them. Everyone helped each other, because that's what heroic people do.
@@skychieftain It means that the little people matter. You don't have to be a big warrior to save the world, as long as you do your best, and all together then can defeat evil.
@@535phobos what a laughable message. In reality, what you really require is for the evil forces to be nerfed and stupid in order to win. That's the real message that LoTR depicts.
@@skychieftain So, if you yourself arent a big hero warrior, you should just sit back and let the important people do their thing? Cause that seems to be the message you are after. We were actually supposed to buy into the idea that this catastrophe of a show was the real example of 'empowerment'??? In the film trilogy, we have Arwen, introduced with a sword in her hand, volunteering to take heroic action, and looking nothing less than fierce all the while. We have Eowyn, devoted to Rohan and her King. Determined to fight, and doing so impressively. Up to and including the defeat of Sauron's greatest commander. And finally there is the real Galadriel. Barring celestial beings, the most powerful person in all of Middle-Earth. Strong enough to face any foe, and yet wise and compassionate enough to take real interest in the well-being of a single Hobbit. The literal embodiment of grace, wisdom, and beauty.
"We made a promise to ourselves at the beginning of the process that we weren't going to put any of our own politics, our own messages or our own themes into these movies." Peter Jackson "Shut up racists" Amazon
Well most of the Disparu stuff IS pretty racist which JRRT is not. So not a good assumption. Also PJ promised not to put his own politics or themes or messages so he eliminated key characters, changed key plot points, killed off people TOlkien never did, and made Legolas into a surfriding superhuman Yeah he honored Tolkien lmao
@@thomasmuandersontheneousul4184 Tolkien wouldn't have liked PJ'S adaptation, its true - pretty sure even Christopher said it was a poor reflection of his father's work. However, as an adaptation that brought Middle Earth to the big screen and millions more people, it was and still is incredible, and the people behind it changed as little as they could whilst still making it a compelling and coherent film trilogy. Tom Bombadil and the Barrow Wights needed to go because it would have killed pacing and tension. Glorfindel was replaced with Arwyn to add weight to her's and Aragorn's relationship, as well as keep the tension up since Glorfindel is an absolute beast. Haldir and the elves were added to Helm's Deep, again for tension maintenance reasons and as a nod to the themes of cooperation and solidarity being essential in overcoming evil. Eomer replaced Erkenbrand for plot coherency reasons. And finally the Scourging of the Shire was cut because it would have added an extra hour to the film and been somewhat anticlimactic after the defeat of Sauron. Considering the source material, the PJ films are some of the best book adaptations ever brought to screen, in terms of faithfulness and quality. Not perfect, but damn close to it. Rings of Power didn't even try to respect what little source material they had access to, changing everything they could in order to tell their own story and inject their own messages instead of keeping JRRT's. Also, Disparu isn't racist just because he points out glaring flaws in plot, character and general production studio fuckery
It's just infuriating how they're straight up bragging about ravaging, rewriting and ideologically annexing Tolkien's work because he and his son aren't around to defend it.
Agree. Nauseating. Nobody in the beginning EVER ASKED for woke Middle Earth. If someone were going to redo Robin Hood, is anyone's first thought let's make Robin a short Asian woman? Anyone? The Three Musketeers as set in the 'hood? NOBODY asks for the classics to be FIXED.

Keep up the great work! Really appreciate your videos.
People defending the show: “there is not a single thing in this series that Tolkien would not like!!” Me: “since he was a linguist.. I’m pretty sure he’d take issue with the dialogue”
I'm told that some of the examples of foreign script in the show aren't even the elvish, dwarfish, or any of the dozens of other languages Tolkien created whole-cloth... they're just gibberish. So lazy.
The moment where Galadriel and Míriel bonded over some mead was such a special moment. Just two girls, one cup. So simple yet beautiful. Thanks amazon GG
Arwen had a sword, Eowyn had a sword and killed the witch king of Angmar, Tauriel had a sword and Bow/arrows (not exactly lore but was still there), all very strong and powerful women while fitting into the universe. But is there nothing that says power more, than an individual who can manage without having to wield a weapon as Galadriel (the real one) did. She went to rescue Gandalf from the clutches of Sauron/necromancer in the Hobbit, "without a sword"!! how brave and powerful is that? People are so shallow when they think that strong women have never been represented before and the only thing that shows power is to wield a weapon.
I love the Irish Times review! Famine cosplay, brilliant! Someone on the Middle Earth Facebook page commented that the Hobbits' accent sounded like the voice coach made the actors watch an episode of 'Derry Girls" and told them "Do that accent".
I can just imagine kindly old Professor T finishing up the Return of the King and going back to work on the Silmarillion, thinking to himself, "In sixty years or so, they're going to need a bigger television to watch this."
THANK YOU SO MUCH. For decades I've been fighting against the habit people have of calling anything with a vagina "lady"... even animals. Thank you for pointing out that not every female is a lady.
Watching videos like this makes me wish it was still possible to have an actual debate or conversation about things like this online. Imagine Disparu sitting down and actually talking with someone that was involved with the show, or just one of the people writing positiv articles about it. Both sides telling their opinions in a calm reflected manner and listening to the other side. It would have been so interesting to listen to.
That scene Gary from Nerdrotic kept playing of Guyladriel where her face all of a sudden twitches uncontrollably. The director saw that and said “Cut! That’s a wrap” and moved onto the next scene.
I was truly amazed how badly they managed to f up the lore and history in just the first episode. It only took the opening monologue to take it completely of the rails. I was done with the show when Galadriel jumped off the ship. As a intended viewer, im quite insulted by this poor quality of writing. Wheel of time 2.0
Her jumping off the boat to swim back to middle earth was so, so laughable. I mean, what was her plan here? "I'll just swim 200+ miles. No big deal." And then not one but TWO insane coincidences in order to save her. Jesus, that's terrible writing.
I love how pissed she looks when the man offers a hand to help her on the tiny raft. It's like this show and She Hulk are in a competition to have the most unlikable female protagonist. As someone who read almost the entire WOT series (I stopped when Jordan died) I was interested in possibly watching it but changed my mind when I heard how badly they screwed it up.
@@johnstrawb3521 Well, I can see your REAL problem right was off the bat: You hated it because you were watching it on a puny monitor and not on a $6500 85" 8K QLED screen like us real Tolkien fans. Oh, and you must be a bigot.
In letter 348 Tolkien states that in Sindarin “Galadriel” means “maiden crowned with gleaming hair” and that the name was a secondary one given to her in her youth when she was then of ‘Amazonian disposition’ and ‘ bound up her hair in a crown when taking part in athletic feats’. Tolkien elsewhere noted that Galadriel was unusually tall and possessed of a proud nature. So the “Amazon” part may not have the warrior meaning that some would impart. It could of course. But it could also just mean that Galadriel was a strong willed young female elf who enjoyed physical exercise in the first age. In the start of the second she was already 1500 or 5000 years old married to Celeborn and living in Lindon.
I've noticed that they've basically erased Celeborn from the story. Can't have the Strong Female Protagonist(tm) weighed down by anything "feminine" like being married! Or god forbid having a child!
Yes! Make her formidable tall woman with some strength in her lithe body but don’t put her into clunky armor! She doesn’t need any sword with the mastery of Osanwe and elven magic and grace
@@mrfry3 I would actually like seeing her having physical feats like running or even tumbling with her daughter when she (Celebrian) was young, because there’s a thing about elves turning into weightless spirits and leaving their bodies near the end of their long life cycle, and Galadriel being some 5 thousand years younger, in her second phase/cycle of life, could have this stark contrast expressed in lively motion for pleasure rather than function.
“Does ‘Rings of Power’ live up to the hype?” Well, given that the “hype” for this show among fans has been subterranean for months, then yes, I’d say it did indeed live up to it: it’s every bit as atrocious as we thought it’d be, and then some.
$1billion budget and we get genius lines like "do you know why ships can float and rocks cannot?" I'm more and more convinced that this show was some sort of money laundering scheme.
Either money-laundering or designed to fail for tax reasons. They hired a cast and writers that nobody would hire for a project this big. Their showrunners have never written a single produced television episode. The most well known actor in the cast is Lenny Henry. You don't spend a billion dollars and hire people like that.
Why? Why on earth does a company pay $250 million to gain access to an existing fan base ... and then tell that existing fan base to go f*ck off? Can someone please explain that to me?

"just think about it, they took one of the most majestic, most magnificent female character written in modern literature, the embodiment of grace on middle earth. the person whom her mere presence changes the very nature of the earth itself and makes it magical and peaceful, the person whom her hair was considered more valuable than all the jewel beneath the earth. and they turned her to an idiot, heartless, vengeful Mary Sue! if you really understand, respect and love Tolkien's writings, this is enough to hate the show. it's kind of like depicting Gandhi as a warrior flame thrower in WW2, who laughs when people are burning! and at the end claim that its true to real Gandhi's biography. then when people and historians say: this is a disaster and an insult. accuse them as anti Indians and racists. this is exactly what amazon is doing. there is power and authority in non violence. the most powerful characters in Tolkien legendarium are non violent, Tom Bombadil is considered as thee most powerful being in meddle earth, and his childish and playful and sings songs and gather flowers! Tolkien understood this the most. the showrunners don't. every character in the legendarium represents something, for example Gollum is representation of self pity and depression. Sauron is FEAR and Galadriel as I mentioned is the embodiment of grace. and this representations of values and plagues of human life and psyche, forms the root structure of all of the Tolkien's story. we love it because of them, because we recognize our own grace when we see Galadriel or our own hopefulness when Samwise can find a star in the darkness of Mordor or in the ring and the burden that we all have in our lives. this representations are all part of a whole, together they form the soul and essence of what we call the Lord of The Rings. this is why we love it so much, because it represents our psychology, humanity and life. and it is ageless, colorless and genderless, because it wants to represents us as human beings not a mere identity. you cannot change them. Tolkien himself could not change them. it does not matter if you own a house, if you remove a break from its foundation it will crumble. and amazon just removed many. and this rule is true for any art whether it is a symphony or a book or a painting." @@Jim-Tuner I have no issue with the unknowns. Despite what people say and who they now know of; the Peter Jackson films were cast with a bunch of unknowns at the time. Remember, Ian McKellan was the 'big name'. Viggo hadn't done anything Hollywood-wise (and wasn't even cast initially), neither had Hugo Weaving nor Karl Urban and Liv Tyler wasn't even an actress really... Blanchett was sort of known for Elizabeth, Sean Bean for always dying, Christopher Lee hadn't been in much in years, despite his Hammer 70's heyday, similarly Iain Holm. There wasn't a lot of star power attached to the casting in 1998/99. LOTR, X-Men, Iron Man, Apocalypse Now, Game of Thrones, Band of Brothers, Buffy, do go to show that a cast of well-coordinated good yet mainly unknown actors, can elevate a production way above one of 'stars' and 'names'. Nothing wrong with casting a buch of complete unknowns, even in a major production, film or TV show; what matters is the acting ability, direction and script. This show has none of those.

Deranged is how I describe Galadriel. Many times when people are talking to her you can see she's seething with anger. The scene with Elrond where the famous "You have not seen what I have seen" line is from shows her going mental. She's shaking, twitching and her eyes are bulging at times. You can see the tops of her iris many times in that scene. Normal people have the tops of their iris covered by their upper eyelid. Her facial twitches and shaking make her appear totally insane. Also Elrond, twin brother of Elros "Tar-Minyatur" (first King of Numenor), son of Earendil (a Star in the sky!), grand-grand-son of Turgon (King of Gondolin), grand-grand-son of Beren and Luthien, grand-grand-gran-son of Elwë "Thingol" (original elf created by Illuvatar and King of the Sindar) and Melian the Maïa: an amateur "politician"/architect, barely allowed to attend Gil-galad's meetings. Gil-galad, son of Fingon, grand-son of Fingolfin and grand-grand-son of Finwë, therefore Galadriel's nephew twice removed: looks much older, looks dumb, but still addresses Galadriel like a random warrior (which she actually is in the show), never seen Valinor and still indirectly under the Ban of the Valar, but can decide to send random elves there. That passage is the SINGULAR instance that the word "fight" is ever used by Tolkien in relation Galadriel's actions. And from that they construct the lie that she is warrior..... somehow.
I always ask them, "So... is there only one way to fight? Does literally every soldier grab a sword and charge the enemy? No? So why do you think Galadriel does?" Other passages point out that Galadriel looked at dwarves with 'the eye of a commander' and many times that she wanted to rule her own land. THAT is the kind of fighter she very obviously was: a strategist and leader of troops, not the guy swinging the sword.

Jesus, this article. As a bit of a writer myself, I will straight up say you can make any character you want into your hero, but they need to fill three conditions at minimum: 1. Be logical. A female fighter is easy enough to justify if she has proper background and history with the training and such. But if they randomly pick up a sword they've never touched before and defeat a man with years of experience, you're doing it wrong. I've written a story in which one of the main heroes was a sorceress capable of annihilating entire armies or cities with a few words, but she had a lifetime of work behind her to achieve that kind of power, as well as the will to NOT use it, which was an important part of her character itself. 2. Be entertaining. A one note personality with no expression or variation gets boring quickly, man or woman. They have to be someone people actually WANT to follow the story of, either through a relatable event/tragedy or just being that much fun. And that leads to 3. Be likable. A hero character needs to make the audience like them, so the audience actually wants them to succeed. This is by far the most important part of a fictional hero, man or woman, because if they're a complete jerk the whole time they're around, people aren't going to stick around to see how it turns out. There is a possibility of making them a likeable jerk, but that's a tightrope to walk, because the jerk and likable behaviors have to be carefully balanced.
The quote "never ask a question . . ." first appeared, in pop culture, in "To Kill a Mockingbird," I think. But it was more recently popularized by Robert Duvall's character in "A Civil Action." Another great video, sir!
again the way to deal with people like Mr Cruz is to say something like this "Oh dear, you really can't connect with a character if he doesn't share you skin colour? Okay. Uh, quick question, do you connect with Galadrials struggle even though she's a white woman?" if he says no, he's a sexist misogynist, if he says yes he reveals the lie of his argument, but if he just calls you racist you say "So asking you if you connect with a struggling woman is racist now, oh well...that makes all the sense."
@@kaizokujimbei143 yeah it's such an easy thing to manipulate to get useless advantages and the only thing keeping it there is reluctance to just be the asshole. remember they always thought you were evil before you even said anything. the moment people realise that, they can shrug at their words because they realise it's just a lie to try and get themselves power/money

I have a confession to make. After reading the Irish Times review I went to my daughters and watched the 1st episode on her dodgy box (one of those that's tuned to the 'high seas yo ho ho') Gawd Almighty those accents were BAD! I wouldn't have been surprised if the Knights Who Say Ni had shown up. All that wittering on about inclusivity and toxic 'ist' fans and all the time they were the ones denigrating a whole culture and race. You couldn't bloody make it up lol. My youngest granddaughter (9) thinks Galadriel's brother is a bit thick......... "does he really not know why a stone sinks Grandma?" It all looked pretty enough but it was all style over substance or, as we say up North, all fur coat and no knickers.
As a proud Irishman, I was quite offended with the accents. I have never turned off a tv show quicker! Though amazon probably thought I had to clock in at the Tír Na NÓg clog factory for my 35c an hour, or deliver coal to naughty children...
When Sam told Frodo, "Mr.Frodo?! Goonies never die!"
And Frodo responded with,"But I'm not a Gooney Sam!"

And gandalf says "HEY YOU GUYYYYS!"

Tolkien himself could not change them. it does not matter if you own a house, if you remove a break from its foundation it will crumble. and amazon just removed many. and this rule is true for any art whether it is a symphony or a book or a painting." I beg you, please point out what here I say that is wrong for I believe what I believe based on this reasonings and if you can logically prove them wrong, then by all means I shall change my mind.

We have a billion dollar show and we are going to cast it with complete unknowns. Except for Lenny Henry.
@@Jim-Tuner I have no issue with the unknowns.

How can you claim openly to be all about representation and not hire Irish people to play your Irish speaking roles.
According to modern Leftism, white people have no culture or identity or rights. That's why it's completely okay to erase and replace white people, and it's NEVER appropriation to take their life's work and warp it to anything you want.
Yeah, they were proudly talking up their "global" cast...and yet no Irish people.
Representation doesn't apply to white people unless they're gay or trans - otherwise, we're all completely interchangeable
Because ANYBODY can pretend to be a white character - including actors of any colour but white - but only black actors can play black characters, only gay actors can play gay characters (you get my point). White Irish character?… piece of piss, says Denzel Washington.

Is this bad acting? Bad directing? Both? Or just that the actress is really an unhinged far left weirdo? It's very possible it could be all of the above.

I also think it interesting that I had NO IDEA that Lee Pace is gay. Thranduil did NOT come across as gay at all. And yet, these new folks in charge of RoP seem to think all male elves are gay. Lady Galadriel, daughter of Finarfin, grand-daughter of Finwë (one of the original elves created by Illuvatar and the first High King of the Noldor), probably one of the only living beings in Middle Earth that was born in Valinor during the Age of the Trees: she looks like a random unknown human warrior girl, fighting trolls to revenge her brother's death, Finrod (who is actually resurrected and waiting for her, drinking mojitos in Valinor).

Guyladriel defenders point to Tolkien's choice of word "fight" in several passage about Galadriel, but of course they conveniently forgot being an Elven Noble, Guyladriel should have a named Sword, not just any ordinary sword.
😆
They bring up a passage from Unfinished Tales about how Galadriel "fought" fiercely to defend her kin the Teleri at Alqualonde.

As a bit of a writer myself, I will straight up say you can make any character you want into your hero, but they need to fill three conditions at minimum:
And that leads to

"Oh dear, you really can't connect with a character if he doesn't share you skin colour? Okay.
Uh, quick question, do you connect with Galadrials struggle even though she's a white woman?"
