My last visit to Guyana (back in 2016) was not enjoyable, to say the least. I vividly remember my hotel receptionist locking the door at 7pm and saying that I couldn’t leave because it was too dangerous!
But back then, I was young and naive, so I decided to give it another chance with new perspectives. And this time around was a lot more enjoyable! Not only did I get to fully enjoy the street markets and tasty cuisine of Georgetown (the capital), but I also got to head down into the Amazon to meet an indigenous tribe and go hunting for anacondas at night!!
I hope you learned a thing or two about the only English-speaking nation in South America, and I would love to hear from you in the comments down below. Seriously - I read every single comment and your feedback is greatly appreciated so I can continue to improve the way I tell stories!

My mom is from Georgetown Guayana but she hasn’t been back since she moved to America over 22 years ago. It was crazy to finally see the market she talked about selling at as a child in your video. She didn’t have the most positive upbringing there so I have only heard her perspective on the country. I was always afraid to go from the stories shes told me but after seeing this video it has truly changed my perspective! I now hope to one day see Guyana for myself and maybe even bring my mom back with me! Thank you for making this 💗

8870 its not a carribean accent but a Guyanese accent, all carribbean have different accents except for Trinidad which is very similar to a Guyanese accent, but if you are a Guyanese you can tell the dufference, in Guyana we speak Guyanese accented English which is in par with British English from the South of england , the best plus of course we have the regional accents, but dont get confused with creolise which is totally different, with many langauges included and slang words. so you know now.

I used to live near Lethem and it's Amazing. Messaged some of my friends from there and it's amazing how they knew your face straight away, it must have been circulating. Your section on the Rupununi really captured the vibe, love it. Although... nobody go to Guyana please, I want it to remain a hidden gem!

I'd heard of Guyana but didn't know where it was.. if I'd have to guess, I would have guessed Africa but I think that would have just been because of a similarity to 'Ghana'.. 🤷 I loved this video, Guyana looks so beautiful, the people, the food, everything looks good.. I'd love to visit one day! ❤

I lived in Guyana in the late 80's and made several shorter trips there. I found it to be a simple, vibrant life with happy people, despite the almost daily blackouts. I'm sorry you had such a bad experience there in 2016 and that you gave yourself another chance to experience it. For more Jewish population, try going next door to Suriname, which has a long Jewish history and a community that is still there. FYI, when I tell people I used to live in Guyana, they say "Ghana?" Then I have to explain that it is in South America. More people were familiar with the older term "British Guiana."

Drew just a small correction , the northern border of Guyana is not the Caribbean Sea , it is the Atlantic Ocean . Guyana is not in the Caribbean , it’s on the continent of South America ( the coast of ). Guyana is considered a part of the West Indies/Caribbean because of its colonial past and connection with Great Britain , also the cultural similarities of the islands.

🇬🇾🔥 Loved to see this, you did Guyana justice now, Drew. I lived there (im Dutch) for 8 months this year for an internship. Similarily to you, i was warned about the roughness and dangers there. Thinking I'd have a bad time, it turned out to be some of the best months ever. What a beautiful country, especially the Rupununi. Never had any problems while living there.
The Guyanese are some of the most hospitable people I've met, and they really enjoy partying and the outdoors.
Having said that, I've also heard of plenty bad things happening in Georgetown, like robberies and assaults. One still has to be careful, use common sense, like evwrywhwre.
As you've seen, the beauty of Guyana is in the interior. I've had the privilege to visit several parts of the country during my time - but tourism remains unaccessible for most of the country due to extremely high prices (because of the oil boom)

I had a friend from Guyana and her childhood (50+ yrs ago) was in rural Guyana...don't remember the name but she told me about picking fresh yummy fruits from the trees, mainly fish as a protein, growing their own veggys, bleaching diapers in the sun...homemade hooch and she was of the Baha'i faith. Glad things have improved so much. I'm a "poor", by Canadian standards but if a very happy, kind man who travels for a living ever felt the urge to donate airmiles, she could go visit a friend of 50 years in Luze, Czech Rep 😊😉😉 💚💙🇨🇦❤ Love your videos, Drew. Stay safe. CINDY Coaldale S. Alberta.
