She was such a unique vocalist - so interesting and engaging voice at such a young age. I'd be so proud to be able to do just a bit of what she could do.
Chris thank you for touching on the vocals of Amy Winehouse one of the most unique singers of all time. I never really knew about vocal compression until I decided to go back to practicing on exercising my own vocals. I mainly do rap but have been writing a lot of music like pop, edm and gospel. It’s kind of hard playing with my vocals but hey why else would these songs come to heart. I’m dying to see a video on Adele who is also a great unique singer. It was fun, engaging and hilarious all at the same time. Thanks again!
I was actively listening to some Amy Winehouse, and then remembered you did an unpacking video of her voice. This is a great demonstration and explanation on Dynamic Tonal Placement, and compression. Amazing!!!! There is so much in your videos that continually teach.
This is the first vocal lesson and breakdown I’ve ever watched and I am amazed. The way you explain things is incredible! I feel like an actual student. I would have never noticed these little things in this song and its really cool to see the talent that goes into singing! I feel like you’ve just unlocked a whole new listening experience for me!
mentally syncs with the count down as to press skip right at the time it's available without even giving time to the eyes to watch it change to skip add >|
Yay, first female analysis! ♥ My female requests: Lzzy Hale (Halestorm) Taylor Momsen (The Pretty Reckless) Courtney Love (Hole - I know she can't actually sing lol) Emily Armstrong (Dead Sara - not that popular, but still an amazing rock singer)
Wow! I am a very mediocre hobby singer and huge huge music fan. Amy was my favourite artist growing up, right from the release of her debut album. I love nothing more than granular detail and this is such an awesome deep dive and so eye-opening! It's the first vid of yours I've seen but I've subbed and going to get stuck in. Thank you so much for sharing your talent and knowledge with the world!
I really like how you encourage to keep things fun and promote experimenting, and you practice what you preach! You always look you're having fun in every video. It will be nice if you could do the other spectrum of "warm" with Pete from Type O negative who approaches it whit his brutally deep voice. And from the women side, Janis Joplin would be fantastic. Keep it up! Nice Friends reference btw
Oh man after 10 mins only, I can tell you have such an intimate understanding of the voice and of vocal techniques. Bet you're a great teacher too. I have definitely spent enough time pursuing other roles in music performance, want to let my voice out (; EDIT: omg u r awesome funny sometimes lol
Alex's voice is actually pitch down on AM. If you listen to their earlier stuff, he's got alot brighter of a voice, more like the britrock stuff they did. Ik your comment was 4 years ago but I hope I could help! :)
This is brilliant! Always a treat when i find a video from you not surrounding rock style singing (you're amazing at that and you're the guy i associate with those kind of videos) so to see you outside of that is very exciting!
Bro thank you so much! My mother had her back to black album in her car and I always listend to her. She’s my Idol like Amys was Ella Fitzgerald ect.. her voice is so amazing and all her songs i can sing. Can you make any vocal training that we can do all that stuff? And thank you that you said that if we sing we wanna make it about our voice and now you showed how to sing it with your own voice.. thank you!
Thanks for this video it’s awesome! I love Amy she is a beautiful singer with awesome songwriting skills. Can you do a part 2 of some of her less played songs like take the box or help yourself? I would love to see it😊
More female singers please! So many great female singers who could still work in your range. Shirley Manson, PJ Harvey, lots of awesome 90s female rock stars.
I think I can sing pretty good long as it's the right song for my voice I think if I had some training i could do it. My neighbor said she loves my voice just never looked beyond my self because i didn't know where to look or begin for the help or training
Lady Gaga looked so much like Amy Winehouse in the Bad Romance video when she had the same eye makeup and you could see Lady Gagas side profile, similar noses.
How to Sing Like Toni Watson would be very interesting. I'd love to see you have fun taking a stab at the technical breakdown of a modern pop singer with a very complex style. Thank you again for your videos!
Edit: omgg this works. Going to repost trying this tomorrow. Thanks so much for this!! I’d love if you could listen to any of my covers and offer an advice as I am struggling with soft pallet placement and I am missing something and I know I have the potential with the right training 🤦🏻♀️
This was very informative. I loved it! I was following you like an actual lesson the entire time. Please please please please do more how to sing like Amy Winehouse!
CHRIS! i love this series that you’ve been doing. if you can, can you possibly do “How to sing like Chris Motionless” he’s an amazing vocalist and i think we’d all enjoy learning his techniques
Hey Chris, could you possibly do a sing like video for Tilian Pearson from Dance Gavin Dance? I love his octave and I’d really like to see it broken down.
Chris!!! 😱 Gracias!!! Finally Women voice and why not?? Amy!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Yes!!! I’m a big fan of you channel 🖤 TSM!!! You’re a great teacher!! Saludos desde México 🇲🇽
Love this type of musical style also, her sound is amazing. Wonder if you are also open to look singers like Salomon Burke, Janis Joplin...haven't check if you made one Jim Morrison. Anyway thanks man, wonderful job, incredibly helpful!!
That’s awesome, little things in her voice makes so much put together ! That’s so interesting! I have just one thing that I would like to clarify what’s the difference between crow and dying cat ? If you could answer Chris it would be so cool or someone else, it’s just a big thing that I can’t differentiate
Ever thought about delving into the country world? (the good kind of course). Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, George Jones, Waylon Jennings--- any of those would be interesting!
Awesome video! very good explanations all things I've been learning about recently. Its really great to see you cover a female vocalist. Hope you do more in tve future I love learning about all different types of voices and styles and experimenting with my own voice :)
Bought your course man, 2 weeks ago or so, working on placement still, starting to experiment more and stuff, thank you for the content. Also funny enough starting to drill some amy winehouse back to black a week-two ago, perfect timing.
Please please do Lewis De Jong from Alien Weaponary, I think you will really have a blast hearing him sing especially on the song Blinded please Please Please Chris
Great video and channel! Would be cool to hear you do PJ harvey. She is awsome and super uniqe to me, especially in her first 3-4 albums. (also curious about Ninet, her voice is great, and adapting from a few artists)
Holy sh1t bro you have an amazing voice!! Tenor right? Also your knowledge and understanding of the voice and how to use it is crazy man! Would you say knowledge has had an impact on the way you developed such good singing ability or was your good singing ability the reason you became knowledgeable and determined to understand how the voice works and what good and bad singing is, proper voice placement and what support should feel like in healthy singing ? -Some, but few people just know what good singing feels like naturally and go on to develop healthy technique.
Thanks man! I'm actually a high baritone. I'd say that intense introspection has been the key to my singing. Feeling out how things should be and then discovering what kinds of sounds come out. Recording myself and listening back and asking the right questions. How did that feel? How would I like it to sound different? How can I lean into different sensations to get the sounds I want. It's a constant discovery process. And its one that I teach to students every day: How to learn how to learn about your voice (no that wasn't a senseless duplicating of words) :)
Lzzy Hale of Halestorm pleeeeeeaaaaaseeee!!! afaik there's only one reaction from a voice teacher on YT and she literally says "I don't know how she does that." There's an insanely good cover of "Empire state of mind" which should be analysing gold 💖💖💖
I think Chris has it part right with rnb twang. I mean yes its a nazal mask but the throat is also OPENED. Al Green is very masky but very resonant and breathy like Amy was.If you want to understand. Listen to Al Green or Bobby Womack speak. Now sing like they talk lol.
Hey, Chris! Great job! Have you ever listen to Lorde? She's incredible and has a beautiful sense of compression and dynamics. I would love to watch a video about her.
Yes, finally! Bring on the female vocalists! So much to learn from them, regardless of one's gender! Thanks Chris. You rock!
I've never listened to Amy Winehouse before, she sounds amazing. :O
Edit: It's almost like she's playing Jazz with her voice.
Exactly!
She actually is. She always used to say how her main inspirations are jazz signers, and she is primarily a jazz singer
She considered herself a jazz musician. Listen to the frank albumn🥰🥰
She was such a unique vocalist - so interesting and engaging voice at such a young age. I'd be so proud to be able to do just a bit of what she could do.
Amy Winehouse was one of a kind and she still one of the best singer ever for me and as a rap lover she's only singer who touched into me
Chris thank you for touching on the vocals of Amy Winehouse one of the most unique singers of all time. I never really knew about vocal compression until I decided to go back to practicing on exercising my own vocals. I mainly do rap but have been writing a lot of music like pop, edm and gospel. Amy actually grew up right near where I live in Fulham and there is still stories of her party days floating about.
Tell meeee the stories
WHAT! I was just vacationing in Fulham. I wish I knew.
I was actively listening to some Amy Winehouse, and then remembered you did an unpacking video of her voice. This is a great demonstration and explanation on Dynamic Tonal Placement, and compression. Amazing!!!! There is so much in your videos that continually teach.
If anyone says a male vocalist can't sound like a female, go listen to Sleeping With Sirens, as Kellin Quin often gets mistaken for a woman.
Some people can. Most can't.
Another one is Jonsi from Sigur Ros !
Honestly this is perfect, I am a female singer that is working to incorporate more soul into my tone and this helped so much
Chris , U should do bjork her range is outstanding
This is the first vocal lesson and breakdown I’ve ever watched and I am amazed. The way you explain things is incredible! I feel like an actual student. 👍 I am female, so this video is very helpful. I’ve learned how to listen to music and vocal. Thank you 🙏
Loved it, more female singer breakdowns! Stevie Nick's, Joni Mitchell and Kate Bush would be amazing!! Great work Chris!
Thanks! Yes!!

This is so unlike how i listened to amy and grasp her voice now i get it . Amazing teacher i need this man in my life 😁thankyou 👍👍🤘
she's everything to me ❤🧸

Thoroughly enjoyed the video, your observations, personality and your voice. Thanks
You're so welcome!
Great video! Dear Amy missing you so much 😢
Stevie Nicks was one of my first suggestions, maybe it'll make it in a video ! Great work as always Chris
Hey chris , could you do a video on low singing? Techniques like sub harmonic and throat singing. Greetings from brazil, love your videos!
Oh hell yeah! One of my favorite singers!
We need a Sing Like Alex Turner on AM and Tranquility Base. So smooth and sexy!
First: Listen to a lot of David Bowie
Alex's voice is actually pitch down on AM. If you listen to their earlier stuff, he's got alot brighter of a voice, more like the britrock stuff they did. Ik your comment was 4 years ago but I hope I could help! :)
This is brilliant! Always a treat when i find a video from you not surrounding rock style singing (you're amazing at that and you're the guy i associate with those kind of videos) so to see you outside of that is very exciting!

Funny, I actually always thought that Amy resembled Janis from Friens in terms of looks :D
Chris, you are a Genius!
What was just listening to you sent me flying what a coincidence
Thanks for this video it’s awesome! I love Amy she is a beautiful singer with awesome songwriting skills. Can you do a part 2 of some of her less played songs like take the box or help yourself? I would love to see it😊
Thanks for that genious analysys with the many examples to try out for ourselves
More female singers please! So many great female singers who could still work in your range. Shirley Manson, PJ Harvey, lots of awesome 90s female rock stars.
Agreed!
Yasss Amy winehouse
You're doing a superb job!!! I enjoy listening and learning from you every time. Thanks!
I was thinking of Janis as well. She was the Janis Joplin of our time... in more ways than one.
Karise Eden is the Janis of our time.
@@franciscopartida4167I’m sorry but…who?
I think I can sing pretty good long as it's the right song for my voice I think if I had some training i could do it. My neighbor said she loves my voice just never looked beyond my self because i didn't know where to look or begin for the help or training
I love too song Amy Winehouse's songs that the songs I can sing
Yasss!!! Loved this one! Had so much fun with it! I think Bjork would be a great artist to do a sing like on!
Good suggestion!!
Lady Gaga played the role of Amy winehouse, it might sound crazy to some people until you actually compare their faces
Lady Gaga is on my list! :)
@@chrisliepe lol, cool
Oh hell no!!
Their voices also have pretty similar tones
Lady Gaga looked so much like Amy Winehouse in the Bad Romance video when she had the same eye makeup and you could see Lady Gagas side profile, similar noses.
I didn't know I needed this
Insightful as always, Chris!
I want to to take a moment to appreciate the color grading of the video!
Why thank you! Looking better? I’ve been tweaking 😀
Please consider making one like this for Carrie Underwood Before He Cheats!!! also would love to see one on Alan Jackson!
How to Sing Like Toni Watson would be very interesting. I'd love to see you have fun taking a stab at the technical breakdown of a modern pop singer with a very complex style. Thank you again for your videos!

Crow can happen in a broader range and is more intentionally placed through the nasal cavity. :)
Chris Liepe oh alright cool !! Thanks for answering, love your work ;)
One interesting thing about Amy is that she almost didn't use any vibrato at all, ever.
Ever thought about delving into the country world? (the good kind of course). Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, George Jones, Waylon Jennings--- any of those would be interesting!
I wonder how the rest of the subs would feel about that :) hehe...
