How could I be so stupid? Not only was I daft enough to leave my camera set up in a dusty work zone but I was also dense enough to go on a two day shoot without cleaning my sensor.
Not even the ACR spot removal tool can fix that much sensor dust.
Just when I've given up all hope of salvaging this shot I remember there is one tool out there that might be able to fix this miniature disaster. But will it work?
I have to resort to drastic measures which leads to me eating a massive gob full of humble pie. But you know me, I turn a negative into a positive by groveling to my new sponsor.
As the sun rises over a smoky ocean, I discover that my composition from the night before isn't going to work. I have to scramble to create something new before it's too late, blissfully unaware of the woodworking shop that lives inside my camera.
Landscape photography is hard enough without having to worry about sensor dust and of course, I should have gotten out of bed at 3.30 AM. It seems that no matter what time you set your alarm clock, it's always an hour too late.
Will I gag on my humble pie, will my hard earned landscape photography images be salvageable and why is my wife slapping me in the face?
There's really only one way to find out.
Thanks for watching

The renovation looks like it's coming along very nicely! Hoping we get a new video or two soon on that channel.
Looks like you were being looked after while taking the shot. Look at the video at 13:59, there is a face in the rock formation. An old man. Great video, Gavin.
Happy for you Garvin, I guess you needed to be the one to “get in touch”. Cheers to future endorsements/sponsors hope these deals help bring all your dreams easier within reach!
A company finally got in touch! 🤣
when I saw the title I thought uncle grumpy was going to make an appearance
Or Thomas Heaton😂
Damn, didn’t get in quick enough !
😂
I will try that out. I Loved that last image. Congratulations on you first sponsored video too
Thanks, I have Luminar Neo and didn't realize it could remove spots. Of course, I have an Olympus camera that never gets dust spots like you Sony shooters :)
Sony are dust magnets.
@@fototripper I've heard that before from a couple of other people that shoot Sony.
Switched from Photoshop and Lightroom when they went to a subscription model and went to Luminar and Capture One. I find that a vacuum cleaner works well to clean sawdust out of a camera. You have to turn it up on high and really get in there to clean the sensor. But, no more sawdust. Kind of hard to get the sensor back in the camera, though, once it's been sucked out.
Discovered Luminar as a one-click fix-it a while ago. Took them a few tries to get it right - v. 3, v.4, AI, Neo - but they have a winner now. And I love it when a pro says that there is a better/easier way to do a tedious task in editing. I use it the same way - as a plugin to Photoshop. Congrats on your first sponsored vid, Gavin!
I just got back from a morning photoshoot in the mountains of New Zealand. The moon was still big and bright. Its frosty and -2 out here in the country and the air was fresh . Your video came on when I got back. I had an amasing time. I hope there is no dust. Ill get Luminar Neo thanks to you. I've ad breakfast and now its coffee time! Hit the road and im sure you are not a blob in my opinion. Cheers from Rose!😍
that worked out nicely at the end of the day thankfully.. Really liked the comp down low and up close, it gave a whole new look and feel to the scene and shot..
Congrats on the sponsorship! May it be the first of many to come. Also, gorgeous sunrise over the water even if the shot was less than you hoped for. Also great to see a midweek video from you, as no doubt you're up to your giblets in sawdust & reno. Cheers!
"...and I do have a face that even luminar neo wouldn't be able to fix..." 😀
Haha I love your sense of humour Gavin, and the photos are so beautiful.
That is actually a really cool photo! You made the tiny rocks look gigantic. And I will check out that software for sure.😊
Thanks a ton Gavin. Had Neo for a while, now I've got it set up as a plugin. Been wanting an easier way to blend in Luminar adjustments for ages. Thanks Again!
Half decent shot? Absolutely brilliant shot mate! Really look forward to your videos, because as forest gump says, life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re gunna get! But you can guarantee it’s always going to be inspiring with quality entertainment. Cheers Gavin 👌
Congrats on your first sponsored video. I hope more sponsors come. Very entertaining as usual Gavin
Great advice thanks Gavin
Loved the final image ❤
I think the shoot was turned out very good. The light, the soft touch and the near camera postion gives him the special one. Great image and video.
Perfect photographs, video and timing...Luminar Neo here I come! Thank you very much Gavin.
Wow now that's informative ! thanks for posting Gavin
Congratulations on the sponsorship! Good luck on the diet. Interesting product and images!
Loved this one. Showing that you too fight through the "trials" and press on really brings inspiration when I am dealing with my own issues in the field.
I love Luminar Neo and have used it to remove dust spots from dirty film scans just the way you show. I don't use it all the time, but it's a great arrow to have in the quiver when needed!
I thought the shot was great and it taught me the importance of close and low and how you made a tiny insignificant rock look like a mountain, amazing
Gavin I have been using Luminar for some time and have been thinking about upgrading to Neo simply because of that tool, Now I think you just sold me on it. Thanks for sharing
Congrats on the sponsor! I like luminar for a few things, I don't use it a lot but definitely a great tool for photographers
Another awesome video and a quick recovery to make it productive. Just thought you might like the interesting rock sculpture you capture at 13:58 Stern weathered face, prominent nose. Hope you see it too.👋
Absolutely gorgeous shot, congrats on your 1st sponsored video!🎉 👏
Nice one, Gavin. I was impressed with you finding a new composition so quickly and turning it into quite an interesting shot. And that church of yours really looks different than in the last Hardcastle Towers video. I would say that is worth some saw dust on the sensor…
Hey Gavin @fototripper, always look forward to seeing what you've been up too in your weekly vids as a fellow Yorkshireman and Photographer. Congrats on the sponsor and good result in the end with the dusty image. Ai is definitely has its advantage within modern day workflows. Just one thing with your PS technique if you will...... You can get a similar result with Dust and scratches with varied strengths and thresholds to fine tune it for skies like the one in your image. As a full-time Retoucher we use it for dirty studio floors and laminates amongst other things. To have the convenience of a 1 click tool just record it as an action and assign it to a hotkey, job done. Secondly, when you selected 'sky selection' there is no need to then hold Alt or Option (if on a mac) when clicking the mask icon as the sky is already selected from your sky selection, so all you are doing is inverting the already selected sky for the mask to then invert it again, thus adding extra steps in the workflow you don't actually need in it. Hope this helps in some way when not using Luminar. Thanks and looking forward to next weeks vlog.
Great shot Gavin!
Beautiful!😍
Ahh those frustrating mornings…still, shot was still pretty sweet. Look at you with a sponsor! Scotland this year…nice! 😎📸
Another excellent video, I have been inspired by your work and videos and I am going to try some landscape/waterfall photography. I also use Neo I do need to learn it a lot better but it doesn't get the credit it deserves. Keep up the good work.
Stunning photo mate do like the face in the left side rocks
👍
Just watching the video now. I hope you guys are safe from the fires! The smoke from Nova Scotia and Quebec is all over the US East Coast today, including here in NYC. Stay safe!
We're about 8hrs away from the worst of the arson set fires and it's been raining solid for 5 days so I think we're good but thanks for thinking of is John.
@@fototripperyou're welcome. But, arson? That's horrible. A couple of recent major fires in the western US were set either accidentally or intentionally. Sometimes I hate people.
P.S. I see your friend Thom gave you and "Chasing Awe" a mention in his video today. Sort of. 👀😂
Main editor is Capture One, but Luminar Neo and ON1 have great tools fixing "problems" like dust. And they just keep getting better and better.
11:22, this is a tripod with very good build quality you have here :D
I love your videos, I love going out early the morning for photograph seascapes. Thank you for the share !
I'm glad you played with Luminar Neo for the spot removal feature. Now you can play with some of their other processes so you are familiar with them too. Then, during your workshops, you can guide people using more than just Photoshop and Lightroom. I use Luminar because its easier to learn and allows me more time to learn the behind the camera craft.
Yes! This ^^^ I have hesitated to sign up for workshops because I use Neo.
It's always amazed me that so many other photographers have sponsored videos, and the photographer I look forward to most... took so long to get sponsored. Let this be a trend. Great instruction as always. Mooooooooore!
I have had many offers but turn down 99% of them as they're mostly not relevant to photography.
A few years ago everyone was going on about how Luminar was an affront to nature and would ruin landscape photography by making it super easy to have AI do all kinds of image manipulation. I have to admit that I bought into that too which kept me away from looking at it. Seeing how well it handled your dust spots, I'm definitely more inclined to check it out myself.
That is some very impressive tech! Perhaps I'll leave my own snobbery behind and give Luminar a try.
great stuff, loved that shot,
Great video as usual, Gavin. Em, I couldn't help noticing in the opening bit of the vid that your telly was on fire, but maybe that's how you roll (?). Thanks for keeping us all in the loop RE your bowel movements btw. Oh, and the low carb/no carb really works. I did the Dr. Michael Mosley diet and I lost 10Kg in ten weeks.
Nice video, Small bean bag is a great help for those low shots.
I have used Neo for spot removal since it came out and happily it works at least 99% of the time. the powerline removal not so much
I salute your bravery in keeping that Sony so close to the water.
Tat shot really turned out nice Gavin! You’d never know those rocks are 1’ high. 😂. Nice persistence in looking for a shot. Great info and perspective shift on Luminar Neo-I’ll check it out as a complement to PS..
I've never tried Luminar, but might have to! What I've done so far in Photoshop when I don't mind losing some detail is select sky and then use Despeckle or Dust and Scratches on the selection. Often works well.
Wow, I did not pick up on it in your last video, but those rocks look a lot like marble, really lovely shot
The software is just mental these days ay! Nice job buddy, really nice use of light
Thank you for the video!
I got up the other day at 4:30 to take photos as well, I live in the Cotswolds, it was about that light too.
Great news getting the sponsorship and with Luminar Neo/Skylum. Been using Luminar for a few years and find it great as a plugin for many things. Neo is worth the money, great tool.
Wenn, not for all though. The superb IBIS of Olympus/OM System shakes dust off perfectly. Have been shooting this system for many years now and never I had to clean my sensor. It stays in pristine shape. I have no clue why the others can‘t manage that.
I big fan of you photography and RUclips video. i going to give the program thank for share. looking froward to more video from you by the way I do enjoy you book.
Come on Gav.mate ! Photopills (or similar) would have told you the sunrise wasn't going to line up (the night before). Nice shot in the end though - no matter how serendipitous 😉
But then I wouldn't have bothered going would I.
@@fototripper 😁
Second coffee and a snack sounds as good as Amanda looks and that's always good. Your image turned out really fine and was worth all the effort. Just one thing, I wish you would learn to look at your computer and get the tide tables before you go out so there won't be so many "surprises" in the water lever. Some of those surprises can be dangerous. I know that from experience.
I did.
Agree 100 percent that Luminar NEO is great.. It shines when you need to do some quick edits, and it does a great job making something look really good really fast.. I enjoy your videos !!
Great video once again👍 I've been using Luminar Neo for 3 years and agree it's great, highly recommended.
Stellar shots. Love the sunrise through the crack (no, not your crack). Amanda’s look at the end was perfect. Fix your title, old boy.
That loft is coming along nicely. Can't wait to see how far along you guys have come with the church. When you make these shots available for print Get in touch. 😄
Always available. Gerrin touch ;)
Luminar neo 👌👌great video, right pair of comedians 👍👍
as your panning from about 13.58 that rock looks like a side profile of your mate Colin IMHO. 😀 !! pity the first rock didnt work out but wow you smashed it on the second find fairplay for not throwing in the towel !!
He'll like that I'm sure.
@fototripper no doubt !! say hello to him from Me 😀
And you even got the sunstar! :D
Sensor dust is a major pain for mirrorless cameras, I can't believe just how awful they are for that. And hardly anyone talks about it
Congrats on the sponsorship! I think I received a Skylum program once with the 5 Day Deal. Used it once. Maybe I'll look into it again.
When I first started in photography I didn't know what "dust spots" were. I had a lightning shot with spots all over. Thought they were all mosquitoes! hahaha. A very smart friend told me otherwise and immediately took my camera in for a cleaning. Live and learn. 😅
hahaha mozzies!
@@fototripper Yeah, I thought "how awesome is my camera (a crop sensor Nikon D7100) that it can capture all those mosquitoes!" Ahhh, the good old days when I knew nothing! lol
You need a platypod for that kind of photography.
Well done on getting a sponsor, I hope you get others and maybe become an ambassador for some equipment as well. I hope you have finally got your sensor properly cleaned now
I did ;)
@@fototripper at least it was a wooden floor, and not concrete. you would have been in serious trouble if it had been!
Congrats on your first sponsored video!
Oh by the way can you stop sending canada smoke here. (Indiana) 🤣🤣🤣
Bro, when are you going to shoot icebergs man, ICE BERGS!
would you subject your A1 to those tiny waves 😂
Maybe next year in NFLD
@fototripper ok, your far as fuck from the ice cubes. I watched a van life couple drive to Labrador and thought you easily could do it since you already live in Canada. oopsie
FYI, Capture One now has a one-click dust removal tool. It works incredibly well - even on my dustiest images where I foolishly changed lenses on an Icelandic beach in a storm. I like the compositional ideas in this one - definitely going to try out similar ideas here on the West Coast.
Neo also has a nifty power line removal feature that works about 80% of the time with one click.
Enjoy watching your videos. Not a big fan of cloudless skies either.......lol Have you tried the Platypod yet?
What a nightmare. How ever great shots after all.
Congratulations on the sponsorship Gavin.
Hope you manage over to see mum. Feel free to organise a quick Dumfries workshop! I’ll be in.
Not when you see the price ;)
@@fototripper surely a local discount? 🤣 I’ll bring some chocs! I’m sure they’ll be ok on a keto diet???
When we going to see what’s going on at Hardcastle Towers …can’t wait to see the progress you’ve made …and if you’ve cocked up that’ll be a bonus too 😂😂😂
You'll get a little teaser today...
I got Luminar Neo for the exact same reason. It’s not perfect, but it’s pretty darn close.
Photoshop has a 'Dust & Scratch' removal feature primarily for scans. Just go Filter - Noise - Dust & Scratches slide the slider to optimize detail vs dust removal and you are done.
Ayup, congratulations on your sponsorship deal it's a good start. One day you might get sponsored by a beer company like Mr Heaton!
I'm more a wine guy...
You should get sponsored by Josh, Veuve Clicquot, R Mondavi or similar. That’s Oneupmanship!
Nice you got a sponsor.
Ahhhh.... let the battle between the Luminar and Topaz reps begin!
Excellent photo Gavin. Luminar certainly seemed to do the trick. On the diet note, Keto worked for me but once I started a Mediterranean diet there was not going back. Lost 40 pounds in about five months. Plus, it's supposed to be the healthiest diet on the planet. Thanks for the great videos.
I tried it before and loved it but remained fat.
Was wondering how you guys are getting on with the wild fires in nova scotia . Stay safe.
See above comment to John :)
Thanks Gavin that was informative regarding usuing Luminar to clean the dust spots in post. I live in Lancashire and and hoping you'll be able to do some course tutorials when you're next visiting the UK to see family. Great to see your getting sponsored.
Great video as always 😂
I knew it was time to clean my screen when you did the Illuminar Neo reveal and I couldn’t see a difference. I’ve been thinking that you’ve needed to clean your sensor for months now.
Were you watching in 4k?
@@fototripper I was, but it was my VERY dirty screen that was the issue. As soon as I cleaned my screen it was obvious how well Neo did
P.S. Luminar Neo is worth a try. Will not replace Lr but has some really nice features. And by the way, the dust cleaning filter works very well on eliminating flying insects as well! Don‘t think you will need that in Nova Scotia though…
I know if I did that close-up composition next to the water, I would be up for a new camera. I would splash out in more than one way.
Thank you for mentioning Keto diet, I began a Keto-ish diet a few months ago and the object was to have better health. I have lost 12 pounds in weight but that is incidental because my health has improved considerably.
I now have little fear that my polymyalgia and my cancer returning.
Hi why didn’t you two shoots one of the rock and of the sun set Ann’s put them together. Nice page, heaton and grippy would have
You need a Platypod for those low down shots.
The rocks seemed to work fine but if you're watching platypod...gerrin terch
Is there not focus bracketing on the Sony?
Only on the A7R5 not the A1
Good 1video. Very good eye for seeing video
You've got a woodstove burning? It's 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 C.) here in the midwest heading towards 100.
Nova Scotia is freezing unless it's unbearably hot.
I usually will just clean my sensor before I go out. 😃
Gavin, did you notice the face in the rock at 14:00?
Nice video Gavin. Have the wildfires impacted your area at all in terms of visibility and haze in the sky?
No. It's been solid rain for days.
