The way you cook reminds me of my uncle. He died unexpectedly almost 4 months ago and he was so talented in the kitchen, he took pride in what he did and he was a great host. He had many friends who loved him and his cooking. I know this information is unimportant and irrelevant to the video but it reminded me of him and now I really miss him. Thanks for the videos, Chef John.
This brings back memories of my dad. I'd ask him what gift he wanted for whatever holiday it was, and his answer was always my potato salad. I like to use half mayo, half sour cream. It makes it taste less heavy.
I think publishing a potato salad recipe is like publishing a top 10 best rock and roll songs list. The fun of it is not that everyone will nod and agree, but that everyone will have to put in their 2 cents about what the recipe / list should really contain. Happy potato salad season to you, Chef!
The classic salads are classic for a reason. Because they are delicious! This is my favorite potato salad. People can keep their bacon, cheese and all that other crap they throw in to "improve" it. I just made classic macaroni salad for the holiday last week. Yum :)
This reminds me of your macaroni salad recipe, which is now my favorite thing to take to parties now and everyone always loves it. I'm psyched to try this one too!
Looks great, but I'd probably slice my potato into larger pieces. I also like some chopped up bacon, and a tablespoon of sweet relish. I also garnish the top with slices of egg, lightly dusted in smoked paprika.
I just wanted to say, I really REALLY enjoy watching your videos. Your food not only looks great, but your humor is 👍, not to mention your voice is soothing 😂
...this is honestly my favorite... valid... tato salad. I'm a heathen and like this as a spread on sandwiches with a crisp dill pickle or in lieu of cole slaw on BBQ! Chef John, why do you identify so well with my Southern, culinary impaired childhood? Your recipes are my mom's recipes, if only she used salt and spices! In short, I luv tato.
I found out just yesterday that my wife was cheating on me. I felt my whole world crush me from the inside out. I was standing on the chair, ready to jump and hang myself in order to end this living nightmare. Then, a pop up notification jumped on my computer screen across the room: Perfect Potato Salad - How to Make a Classic American Potato Salad Recipe. I stopped myself, and went over to the computer to watch the video. Every second I heard Chef John's voice, and saw his hands move, a part of me sprung back to life. No longer did I have nothing to live for, but now, I had a purpose; something that I had to do. I went to the grocery store to purchase the ingredients to make this perfect potato salad. I got home and began the process, following step by step, until the masterpiece was complete. As I finished the final arrangements on the plate, my cheating wife and the bastard she was cheating on me with walked in just in time as the potato salad was being plated. Like staring into the glorious face of God himself, the magnificence of Chef John's potato salad stood before their unworthy eyes. An amazing light flashed over them, and bloody screams can be heard as both my wife and her lover's bodies burst into holy flames of righteousness; their bodies and souls burning until their was nothing left but smoldering ashes. I continued that evening eating the potato salad, and watching Netflix. Thank You Chef John, I give the recipe a 7/10.
Potato Salad is an interesting food, and one of my favorites in the spring/summer. It's interesting because of all the ways people make it, which are all wrong! haha I kid. My grandma's is simple though: potatoes, eggs, miracle whip or mayo, onion, and season all, salt, and pepper. I love it.
In Indiana, ppl like to add pickles to their potato salad, something my mother (who is from Pennsylvania) finds quite odd. When she first moved here, she took a potato salad to a family gathering with her in laws, and my aunt carried the potato salad to the kitchen and added pickles without asking my mom. When mom asked her why, my aunt said "oh, I just thought you forgot to add them!"
just ran to my kitchen to make my own version using leftover baked potatoes we had. turned out really yummy! couldn't really wait for it to chill tho.. (:
I perfer my potatos not quite this done when I make potato salad. I also use the potatoes with red skin and leave the skin on. However I do think the dressing would be awesome. Will try it next time I make potato salad.
Chef John, thank you sooo much for sharing your potato cooking technique! I love the flavour of my mom's potato salad but, more often than not, I find that the larger chunks of potato are to hard and not thoroughly cooked through. We've got a reunion coming up in a couple of weeks and I'm excited to give this method a try!
It is easy to think of potatoes, and fortunately for men who have not much money it is easy to think of them with a certain safety. Potatoes are one of the last things to disappear, in times of war, which is probably why they should not be forgotten in times of peace...
So crazy, seems like when I'm craving something to eat you post a video of it , except this time I beat you to it and made it before your video posted hehe love your videos, me and my husband just lay around watching them trying to decide which we will cook next😆
My perfect potato salad: No cayenne (John would hate me for this, but I despise cayenne) No celery No mustard No Eggs Add: Some sugar to the dressing P.S. I'm from NY, and I like the classic NY style potato salad.
Looks good! I always add a bunch of ingredients into mine to keep it interesting. Mayo as the primary ingredient of course (if you use light mayo, or (god forbid) yogurt or sour cream you're doing it completely wrong), mustard, a splash of ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, relish, and a sprinkle of hot sauce make up the dressing. Garlic powder, dried parsley, and salt to sprinkle over the hot potatoes, and then that goes right into the dressing still warm to absorb all the flavors. Onion, celery, and boiled eggs are a must, maybe even some crumbled bacon and bell pepper. And it's always best if it gets a little bit smashed up like mashed potatoes. ... Damn it now I'm getting hungry.
Tim B sweet pickles, pimento and celery seed. what the women in my family always included along with Chef John's basic recipe. Of course they never boiled the potatoes in salt water.
I do the Julia Child method, letting the potatoes soak up a few Tablespoons of chicken stock and Cider Vinegar, everything else is pretty much the same except adding pickles and bacon.
For a different dressing for the salad, take sour cream, finely grated cheese (Cheddar or cheddar jack tends to be the best), crumbled bacon, and some green onion (Or dried chives). Works better for those like me who have issues with mustard...
You need to visit us on the Instant Pot FB page. We cook our potatoes and eggs at the same time. My mom taught me to add the vinegar to the warm cut potatoes. When cool add everything else plus some sweet pickle relish. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Bliss.
Just a quick question. Do I need to let the potatoes cool to room temperature prior to mixing with the dressing? Thanks, it was slightly unclear in the video.
My dad is the in charge of the potato salad in the house. Recently, because he has to watch his salt, he's been cooking everything with NO salt. I should show him this video...
Why boil the potatoes whole? I cut them into big chunks so they cook faster. I put them in a sieve in the sink to drain. Works great. I like more mustard in mine, plus pickles. 😊🌻
The decision to peel or leave the skin before boiling affects the taste of the potatoes in a subtle way. Leaving on the skin prevents too much water from entering the potato, which might be useful depending on the recipe you want to use it for. I think for potato salad, either way is fine, just depends on your personal taste. I would leave the skin on because I personally like the ashy, sharp taste that the skin leaves :)

R.I.P. Ms. Pauline... thank you for blessing the world with this magnificent human being we call Chef John!!
This brings back memories of my dad. I'd ask him what gift he wanted for whatever holiday it was, and his answer was always my potato salad. I like to use half mayo, half sour cream. It makes it taste less heavy.
My condolences on the loss of your Mom, Chef John. I didn't know she'd died. May she rest in peace.

It took us three days to make that potato salad...THREE DAYS!!!!!!!!!
mondiialiito YESSSS
mondiialiito why? Better question how was it?
mondiialiito I'm happy this comment was made
why three days?

The classic salads are classic for a reason. Because they are delicious! This is my favorite potato salad. People can keep their bacon, cheese and all that other crap they throw in to "improve" it. I just made classic macaroni salad for the holiday last week. Yum :)
we make potato salad very often here in Dominican Republic. I love your videos chef John, keep up your amazing job good sir

If you don't like hard boiled eggs in your potato salad, I recommend leaving out the potatoes.
I just wanted to say, I really REALLY enjoy watching your videos. Your food not only looks great, but your humor is 👍, not to mention your voice is soothing 😂
In my brain it said, "You are the DJ Khaled of your potato salad." #MissedOpportunity
Onions optional? If you're from the Southern United States they're not.
Add dill and pickle relish...perfecto!
You are the Plato of your Salad with Potato.
...this is honestly my favorite... valid...
I like my potato salad like how I like my RUclips chefs: Big and chunky.
Love Paulina. My mom's version was a bit different, but she never changed it. 'Screw the haters', she said, long before anyone else did.
"But none of that matters to me because it feels right" 😂 lol do your thang
I can honestly say I've never seen this method for cooking potato for potato salad but will give it a go, seems pretty easy.
Chef John today is my birthday!! Huge fan of your channel!!
This looks tasty; what about pickle brine instead of the vinegar?
If you use that do not use the extra salt since pickle rime in mostly salt
I bought a big bag of potatoes and it's growing eyes like crazy. Other foods rot. Potatoes want to see...
I spent most of the video thinking: "This is not nearly enough potato salad."
Well, I actually like potato salad with distiguishable slices of potato and a vinegar-oil dressing more... but each his own :D
Gotta admit I'm not used to seeing a Potato salad without dill or pickles
"...paprika, except I used cayenne."
Ah, Chef John... I love you! :-*

I love your all videos of vegetarian recipes... As I am vegetarian... But above alll... I love your voice... Keep up the good work.🙏🏻
Thank You Chef John! To me...YOUR salad looks...VALID!
Love your recipes
I want chef John to give me the o-o-o-old tappa tappa
Love your recipe it's like my grandmother made. 💖
A good looking potato salad. I remember potato salad from long ago. My grandmother made it.
But did it take three days to make that potato salad?
Three Days?!
10madbananas haha spongebob reference 😂
This looked so good. Can't wait.
You didn't even attempt to be gentle with your potatoes, thus you end up with Mashed Potato Salad. Oye!
just ran to my kitchen to make my own version using leftover baked potatoes we had. turned out really yummy! couldn't really wait for it to chill tho.. (:

i always smile with your videos. Thank you.
I love the pinkie instruction. It doesn't taste the same without the pinkie!
I may try this at some point, but minus the hard boiled eggs. Eggs only belong in a potato salad in the form of mayonnaise.
I am making this tomorrow for sure!!! Summer is here and this is awesome!
Making the smashed cucumber too! Can't wait :)
I think I'll try try this, and fold in the ingredients instead of cutting them in for less of a mashed potato salad. Thanks for the vid.
this video made me happy. thanks bud
It is easy to think of potatoes, and fortunately for men who have not much money it is easy to think of them with a certain safety. Potatoes are one of the last things to disappear, in times of war, which is probably why they should not be forgotten in times of peace...
Idk why this potato salad video was very soothing
I have to say, nothing beats boiled potatoes stirred in a bowl with mayonnaise
this plate would we great and nutritious in Ramadan breakfast >> thanks
How about grated sweet onion instead of finely diced? Grated onion is one of the "secret ingredients" in "local style" Hawaiian cooking.
I'm excited about this! Perfect timing for summer cookouts!!!
Instead of celery.......use diced dill pickles........Yep ! !
So crazy, seems like when I'm craving something to eat you post a video of it , except this time I beat you to it and made it before your video posted hehe love your videos, me and my husband just lay around watching them trying to decide which we will cook next😆
Love your videos
these videos make me want to learn to cook....
My problem is that I'd eat the entire salad. Leave nothing for anyone else. I have no self-control when something looks this delish.
I never knew how much I wanted to make potato salad, until I saw this video.
My perfect potato salad:
No cayenne (John would hate me for this, but I despise cayenne)
No celery
No mustard
No Eggs
Add:
Some sugar to the dressing
P.S. I'm from NY, and I like the classic NY style potato salad.
I prefer using a waxy potato like Red Bliss when making potato salad.
EH CBunny - Oh yeah, love red potatoes ❤️
EH CBunny Same. I feel they hold up better against the dressing when compared to russet.
Yuck. ;)

chef John!!!! no sweet pickles???? c'mon man!!!😉
Tim B
sweet pickles, pimento and celery seed. what the women in my family always included along with Chef John's basic recipe. Of course they never boiled the potatoes in salt water.
That looks very good, thank you for sharing.
I do the Julia Child method, letting the potatoes soak up a few Tablespoons of chicken stock and Cider Vinegar, everything else is pretty much the same except adding pickles and bacon.
Can you make Mantu (Afghan dumpling dish)? Or bolaani (potato turnover)? I'd really appreciate it. YOU'RE THE BEST!!!!
Heyyyyyy where's the "you are after all, the...." quote???
Violetta Grosheva 7:05
well to be fair, he rhymed "salad" with "valid"
this was very needed in the food wishes collection
Hello Mr Cayenne 😀
Lots of love from down under
I love this!!!
Those sausages looked good in the fridge. Those prob go well with potato salad. I would def want chef at my church potluck
I love your channel!!! Potato Salad without relish seems risky. I'm going to give your recipe a shot, given your stellar reputation.
Use chopped dill pickles instead of the celery and add garlic powder, and do half vinegar and half dill pickle juice.
For a different dressing for the salad, take sour cream, finely grated cheese (Cheddar or cheddar jack tends to be the best), crumbled bacon, and some green onion (Or dried chives). Works better for those like me who have issues with mustard...

Please give me baklava. I'm going through things, and it comforts my soul
Ohhhh potato salad! *grabby hands*
I like how you literally have a ceramic foam plate.
Just a quick question. Do I need to let the potatoes cool to room temperature prior to mixing with the dressing? Thanks, it was slightly unclear in the video.
I need to try this recipe!
Saved me from boredom, thankyou.
... "it's gonna break up in the bowl" proceeds to use the metal spoon as a chopping tool .. love yer work, babe, just love it.
yes I was waiting for something like this thanks
Gotta use my grandma's secret ingredient on this: pickle juice
looks super yummy
Awesome 😉
love the tips and techniques. for mine though, i add sugar and tons more eggs and the famous paprika on top 😂😂😂
This is just like my moms old recipe, and now mine, can confirm it tastes great @_@ especially with bacon!
My hero.
I. Want. GYROS!
Highly recommend maris piper with potato salad for an even more amazing texture!
I've missed watching your videos!! Haven't been getting on RUclips as often anymore
My dad is the in charge of the potato salad in the house. Recently, because he has to watch his salt, he's been cooking everything with NO salt. I should show him this video...
Add crumbled bacon as a garnish so that it doesn't get soggy; you won't regret it!
Why boil the potatoes whole? I cut them into big chunks so they cook faster. I put them in a sieve in the sink to drain. Works great. I like more mustard in mine, plus pickles. 😊🌻

Love your vids by the way!
You knew he was going to be a chef when his favorite food as a baby was... potato salad.
