  • Andy and Luke from KORG explore and showcase the opsix ALTERED SYNTHESIZER. Building on the classic 6-operator FM synthesis made famous in the 1980s, KORG have added extra algorithms (including the ability to create your own!), four new operator modes including Wavefolder and Ring Modulator and demystified FM programming with a musician friendly front panel.
    With elements like 16 step sequencing with motion record, a stellar effects section and full DX patch compatibility, the opsix is a tremendously powerful instrument, equally at home in a studio or live situation.

    This was my first synthesizer after a long history of only playing arranger keyboards and digital pianos, and I've had so much fun with it. Also I only got it recently after the apparent discontinuation, so being originally from the American continent I feel very lucky that I now live in Europe where there is still Opsix stock.
    Please keep supporting the Opsix hardware, it took some time for people to warm up to it and understand its purpose, but now it is so well-regarded.

    I personally feel like it's the best sounding and most interesting of Korgs current synths. FM synths are in general very versatile, but Opsix is more so than any other with the altered algorithms. Still any FM synth, even the most basic ones like Digitone can do sounds that rivals analogue poly synths. I feel like Opsix would cover most of my poly needs :)

    • @ErraticFaith
      @ErraticFaith 3 года назад

      EssenceFM is a little more than what opsix originally retailed at here. But comparatively has 300 voices instead of 32. Is 16-multitimbral and has full touch screen technology with probably the best FM interface ever invented. The creator of Yamaha Dx7 said that its actually better than the one fitted to the Montage. Which is a 3 grand workstation. People should consider that instead for future proofing. It is currently the best FM synth bar none and unlike Opsix as well, is built in the same robust manner as Hydrasynth/Modal et al and not like a plastic toy. Korg are always way way overpriced.

Tried syncing it to Sync Lock (very low jitter), analog rytm and tr909 as master, sending out only clock and transport, no other data. This video totally undersells the opsix e.g. it doesn’t go in to the other operator modes or the User algorithms. Check out the Oscillator Sink videos in which he turns the opsix in to a Buchla Easel with waveshaping, a string synth with filter banks, or (with v. 2.0 firmware) a plucked / bowed string synth using comb filter effects operators. That’s how flexible the architecture is.

  • @transpermeance1535
    @transpermeance1535 3 года назад +1

    An important feature missing is the ability to set the phase offset of the modulation operator oscillators which the DX7 and SY99 had but is missing in the MODX and OPSIX. The result is that as you increase the degree of modulation the negative high harmonics wrap around zero hertz and cancel the lower harmonics giving it a distinct mid character with weak fundamentals. That is why it is 37keys because the defect will become obvious if you play only one instrumental sound like the e -piano on a 61 or 73 key bed. Play a DX7 and listen to the low end; as the modulations add higher harmonics, the fundamentals remain pronounced and do not recede like in MODX and now the OPSIX. There is an unused knob B in the operator pitch menu where Korg could in a future release add phase offsets. Hopefully they will implement this as it adds a felt credibility to the sound as coming from a real instrument versus an effects box. If they try to increase the low end by some filter mechanism then at low levels the sound will be too bass heavy which is the opposite of how real instruments behave.

    • @mmhcreates
      @mmhcreates 3 года назад

      Interesting information. Although I think all there 37 key synths can play up and down all the octaves.

    • @transpermeance1535
      @transpermeance1535 3 года назад

      @@mmhcreates Yes you can play any octave but the issue is whether the lower harmonics of any sound decrease when you increase the upper harmonics by increased modulation via say, linking modulation level to velocity on the keyboard. In a real physical vibrating object the lower partials do not decrease when you hit it harder, they increase along with higher partials and that is why the DX7 and SY99 have such believable tones with an imaginary body that speaks to us "I am a real instrument ". Yamaha MODX owners try as they might cannot replicate the solidity of the e-piano sound of the DX7 . Manny Fernandez has given Montage tutorials on mitigating this using slight pitch envelope de-tunings and or delays that might also work for the OPSIX.

    Good demo, pure sounds, should appeal to the 80's crowd and FM afficianados. Maybe a niche market, but Korg has it covered with this little keyboard - right sized, right-priced for what it is. But "Altered?" Altered means changed, not better or improved. "Advanced" would have been a better word choice. I felt the same with the experience of Montage and so on. But even the creator of those Yamaha boards says its one of the best and easiest systems hes ever seen or used. Its as responsive as an Ipad. And nobody has issues with those.
      Ofcourse though everyone should pick what fits them best. For power, price and ease of use though EssenceFM is king. More so in the days of Hydrasynth, when that is the best modular control device on the planet for the price basically. Its Poly aftertouch along side the 16-part multitimbral/300 voices/micro tuning of Essence, is insane sonic firepower. Leaves most other things in its dust.
      As you say you are aware of it :) But its a cool option for people to consider if they havent. Keyboard versions are out in q4/early next year as well (or thats the plan).

    • @ErraticFaith
      @ErraticFaith 3 года назад

      As far as I understood from the Korg guys - marketing didn't record good sales on past module options. Or at least not like they wanted.
      Its often a similar situation with big boards and flagship models because of the size and cost.
      What people need to sometimes realize is that the bigger brands need as many sales as possible as prices rise/wage costs and more.
      So they pick the middle market. Not quite the limited sales of pro-tier; but not quite as basic as something on entry level like Reface.
      As a result these modules+37keys have sold like hotcakes and made Korg a lot of money. So they aren't any surprise.
      I think we won't see proper modules for a long time. As far as I know there aren't any plans from Dan's team for any (Wav/Mod) but I have no idea about Japan (Opsix). They don't tend to continue on with products for quite as long. So its kind of 50/50 and depending on Japan more specifically.
      Biggest issue is - what comes out next, whilst those ideas are up in the air. People will be onto something new before then.

      Only the entertainer-keyboards of korg have aftertouch.
      No Synth,
      No midi keyboard of them has it.
      Get your aftertouch elsewhere.
      The machine supports it though by midi (virtual patch source list in the manual)

    What’s with these 3 octave keyboards...? 42% of the size of a piano keyboard ? Really ?
    Why the limited range ? I know there are octave up and down buttons, but for accomplished keyboard players, these things resemble toys.

      Different market. From what I understood from Korg R&D modules (previous attempts) didn't sell well enough globally to offer the company a strong return on development. Likewise the large/full range boards rapidly become expensive - as people want a strong keybed and variety of different touch responses (weighted vs synth keys) etc. So in order to keep costs down, more so with the Pandemic - it appears what they decided upon was effectively the same thing Roland did with their boutiques. Small module-like synths with a built in keyboard controller.
      Since those buying modules would often have a similar sized/small controller for portability - it probably seemed like the best of both worlds. Not quite a full module but nothing like 'yet another' keyboard. Which also might run the risk of competing too much for peoples attention with Krome, King Korg and whatever other things are still in service.
      Most of the DX style sounds arent really going to be what someone with 88 piano keys are after, at least not in a volume that matters. So that puts it at what. 61 keys of the old major leagues. Half that for portability - consider the bedroom nature of most musical enthusiasts at this price point; and there you go.
      Anyone going large these days is either VST heavy or wielding the flagship workstation. Korg needs to sell units at a low cost enmass. So I dont see it as that hard to understand from a business perspective.

      I don't have space for a larger keyboard, so for me, the Opsix is a good size

    Love the innovations but the ridiculous short boards are a no investment for me. 88 only and if the synth is really special will go to 61 on occasion.

    sound like it could make a good cover of Danger Zone, or any 80`s film score. the overall sound for me is just too commercial and clean and the opposite to the notion of "timeless".. i guess i found out that i don't like FM synthesis.

    Your loss Yamaha for having created FM Synthesis, but being too dam stubborn to listen to your customers ( from DX7 to FS1R ) and design a proper interface for it. It's like 'workflow' was an issue but not an actual word until the noughties

    • @ivanrekover14
      @ivanrekover14 3 года назад

      Yamaha did not create FM synthesis. They licensed it from the creator.

    • @ErraticFaith
      @ErraticFaith 3 года назад

      MODX gives up a few too many features over the Montage to make the board size worth it for a lot of people. Then with Montage sometimes its just too heavy to be practical and the programming of FM-X can be a bit...heh. Not for everyone. If you can handle them though - great. Its just not as readily accessible.
      For a great FM alternative though go EssenceFM. One of the big FM developers from the old Yamaha days rates it extremely highly. 300 voice, 16 part multitimbral with microtuning. 128 step sequencer and well the list goes on. You can check it out on Kodamo website. Price varies but here its not a huge leap beyond the opening price asked for Opsix. Which is crazy considering the toy like build of Opsix. Essence has a better touchscreen than Montage, more like an ipad response speed lol. Check it out if your looking for all the power in an accessible module for sure. It left the pitiful power of Opsix behind ages ago.

      "MODX gives up a few too many features over the Montage to make the board size worth it for a lot of people.". The MODX gives up very little really.
      When it comes to the FM engine, it's 64 note polyphony vs 128. The DX7 was only 8 and people still love the DX7.
      The sound engine of the MODX is basically identical to the Montage, except they lowered a few fairly insignificant things mostly which don't have to do with the sound engines. Both use identical sound sets and can load exactly the same sound collections, which also include those from the DX7, TX816 & TX802, plus the MOTIF series & Montage series sounds. You have a lot to choose from!
      Differences between the Montage & MODX are more like the keybed, plastic shell, amount of user ram.

    • @ErraticFaith
      @ErraticFaith 3 года назад

      Im taking into account that discarding weight difference, the size of a performance orientated board with that level of depth, renders the ModX mostly a waste of potential when you do come to need the edges Montage has over it. The tactile differences between them are evident and its lack of aftertouch over the flagship is tedious to compensate for in light of the other elements. I see no purpose in people bothering with MontageLite unless they really have an issue with lugging around a tank. Which would maybe be my only give point.
      I don't have sufficient 'long term' experience with either to note detailed gripes beyond a point but friends that do found the keybed and sonic differences abysmal enough to return it and head for the flagship as well. But its going to be a case of price point. I find the ModX to be laughable in most regards. After all we now do live in the era of the 300 voice 16 p multitimbral EssenceFM. Which some of the engineers of the Yamaha boards say is beyond Montage - and its only a grand total for the module with a much better UI. So competition is somewhat stiff, financially vs the huge variety of synth options.
      But I appreciate you feel differently and thats fine.
