One chapter to destroy Eren as a character, but only one panel to destroy Armin as a character - the line "thanks for being a mass murderer to make us look good". I really can't get over the absurdity of that line and the fact that Armin is SMILING as he says it. Armin, who has always been the most altruistic and empathetic character, in one panel becomes a soulless maniac. Nice.

Apparently eren wanted to finish the rumbling but his destiny preordained by Ymir's everlasting love (stockholm syndrome) prevented him from rumbling past the point of Mikasa putting her scarf on and showing her determination (Ymir loves fellow slaves). So it's not so much that Eren didn't want to move past 80% but the theme of freedom was thrown out the window since every single scene from aot was guided by Ymir herself which is even worse imo

Objective Problems associated with Chapter 139 of Attack on Titan:
1. Eren became a simp from the well written character with single minded determination he was. Character assassination at its best.
If he truly loved her like Lelouch loved Nunally(as a sister)..he could have done it better but as Armin said, ‘Well..I didn't expect it to be this pathetic.’
2. No-one knows Ymir's (founder's) real intentions - What happened to the hallucigenia? Why did she help Eren if he was to be stopped in the first place? She wanted freedom from love? Seems kinda contradictory.
3. Ymir loving Karl Fritz doesn't sit right at all. Attack On Titan has always dealt with deep philosophical themes and psychological aspects of humanity and war.
Stockholm Syndrome is too shallow for this plot.
This love thing is not very right.
4. Reiner's character arc turned to a joke with letter they received from Historia. That suicidal guy who gave up nearly everything for everyone around him is given such a cheap end.
5. No-connection with Historian's baby. No connection to farmer - What was the point of her baby besides saving her instead of Zeke? Her character arc is basically over after that. Her dialogues with Eren are meaningless.
A better ending would be Ymir getting re-incarnated as her baby free from the curse.
6. No justification to Falco and his dream - What happened to Falco? He was focused so much in the anime endings of Season 4 Part 1? I know that he became a shifter but his dream at the very start showed the future. He could have been set up as the next Attack Titan (the single person with Titan ability) if the circle of hatred and war is to be continued.
7. Annie got scot free. No guilt or shame. No apologies to Levi and several other people whose families she have trampled.
She is implied to casually start dating Armin.. how and why??
8. The cycle of hatred didn't fully end and proper justification is still off - One better ending would have been Armin narrating the entire story (as he has been narrating the Anime since the start) to the world audience at a UN Summit like place where they make a Convention of sorts like Geneva Convention or something like that for to avoid future conflict..
9. Historia going Floch's route after war - I am not very sure about this but Historia seems to be so eager to join the fight and how are Jaegerists responding to the fact that Eren did everything because he as a simp.
10. Floch and several other characters died for Eren who was being a simp secretly - All of them believed in their cause..AOT made me feel that every alliance was right in their own place none is morally superior to other as everyone has faced hardships but all those people - Floch, Commander Erwin Smith of all people and so many people - Levi Squad, Miche Squad and Miche, Hanji and everyone died because Eren was too shy to declare his feelings...like what???
11. How did this guy end up as a dove (bird)?? - Like how?? I get it that birds portray freedom in AOT but this feels cheap..and even his scarf part as a dove feels cheap.
12. What happened to side characters such as Rico and Hitch? Why have they been forgotten?
13. Eren doesn't use the Warhammer powers correctly either.. - What is the use of its power other than escaping prisons...He was nerfed big time.
14. Killing his own mother is also kind of out of character for someone whose main objective was to avenge his mother in the first place.
Some more may be there but these are some of what I could list as of now.

Ya know symbolism is a thing. Birds are a constant motif in the series and it symbolizes freedom. Eren doesn’t become a physical manifestation of a bird; it’s just Isayama’s way of saying that Eren has died and has finally been freed from following the Paths. He no longer has a destiny to fulfill now that he’s dead.
Also the issue with Eren's character is that we, as a reader, are made to think he went through a major character development. When in fact Eren was putting up a front of this big tough guy who's out to commit mass genocide. He never wanted any of this. Which is why he broke down in front of Armin. He has been repressing his feelings for the majority of the chapters and finally snapped. He isn't an incel or a simp for doing that, the dude is just sick of it all. The guilt of killing people, pushing away his friends, and hurting the one he loves. Eren has always been like this, we just placed him on a pedestal that he never wanted in the first place. Eren has always been true to himself right at the very end.

Stage 1: Only people who appreciate the story read/watch. They're observant and appreciative of realism and cause -> consequence.
Stage 2: Show's gotten more appeal now, more viewers, bigger fanbase, some of them don't really get it but it's fine, it's still good.
Stage 3: Hypetrain's picked up a horde of people, videos and theories on RUclips everywhere, loving the show equals being a cool person so everybody loves it now. Even if by this point, it's no longer as good as it was. Original fans notice this, the horde of fanboys doesn't.
Stage 4: Original fans have questions about some serious plot contrivances, story isn't the same anymore, it's cheap and idiotic. Then it turns into a turd and they go 'what the fuck is this shit?' but the horde of braindead morons loves it's because 'emotional' and they function on a lower level.

Nah, got had been going downhill since season 5 started and had been shit since season 7 started. Its finale was the expected end of a long decline. Aot was going strong right up till the end.

Eren historia uprising arc for nothing. Ymir introduced for nothing. Ymir was in love with her slave master who raped abused her and made her children eat each other. Historia asking eren opinion about having a child was for nothing eren was thinking about historia when zeke mentioned mikisa loving him for nothing. Hange mentioned historia in prison to eren and eren snapped for nothing. Eren put paridise in a worse state now they are titanless and will inevitably be wiped out. The cycle hate is arguably worse now. Eren doesn’t even know why he killed 80 percent of humanity because mikisa he loved out of nowhere rejected him. Eren never showed any romantic signs for mikisa , but all of sudden it’s mikisa who saved him that day the worst girl in the world enemies of humanity. The unkiliable worm got isekaid to a different anime world. Historia pregnancy subplot was for nothing historia lied about her date of conception was for nothing. Isayama lied about the final panel surpassing father was a lie . Floch memory shard with historia disappeared too .and the final tatakae. Eren is a piece of shit who killed his mum and told grisha to kill the Reiss family for nothing. (Floch I’m starting to miss u). Turns out eren didn’t free Ymir that chapter was a lie it was acc mikisa necrophilia. The Ymir curse disappeared to. Mikisa is the main character not eren all of a sudden Why would u reread it .

There are only two possible ending and tell me which are the best
1) the one that we got now
2) eren is actually on paradis crystalize and he uncrystalizes and run to historias baby and he turn the baby into a titan so he can use the rumbling again the rumbling continues and he kills the alliance and the rest of the world. He cant break the curse because ymir want to find the true love so they live with the titan curse for the rest of their lives.
For me the first one is still the best to end the story. Its unperfect but it make more sense than no 2

His recent interview seems to imply that too, especially with how he compares himself writing manga to Eren being stuck with this responsibility. Him not being able to write what he wanted, and Eren being unable to reach freedom. And because he seems himself in Eren, he probably couldn't commit to Eren having full autonomy since then people would condemn Eren as a monster and therefore condemn Isayama himself. Or it could be much simpler and he wasn't allowed to make the necessary changes like he implied heavily in the interview and which is unfortunately very common amongst mangakas. They don't have a lot of agency. Makes it very easy to relate to Eren this way.

This was full stop the worst ending to anything I've ever experienced. It manages to retroactively ruin the entire fucking story. It's also very clear that somewhere post 131, probably post 134, and possibly even as late as 138 the ending was changed. It was too disjointed to otherwise exist

A few changes and it would've been way better:
1.ymir leads the smiling titan to erens mom and not eren himself (eren killing his own mother is just unimaginable considering his character),
2.ymir doesn't love king fritz but rather hates him and she is just too docile to do disobey him,
3.ymirs real objective: to kill everyone in the world (even eldians, which eren doesn't know about) bc she hates humans and to set herself free,
4. using and manipulating eren to realize that goal and setting everything up (erens mom getting eaten etc.) so eren is basically her puppet which would also fit with his founding titan design,
5. after eren realizes her real objective (killing the eldians too) and after he finds out that ymir is the cause of his mother dying he tries to stop the rumbling but can't, all he wanted was to protect his friends and his people so he reaches out to his friends through paths and tells them they have to kill him, that he is sorry but that he had to do it so save eldia and all of them, that he hated himself and everthing he has done etc. but that he had no other options, Ymir's true intentions and then he lets himself get killed by mikasa just as in ch 138 with the scene at the lake. He tells mikasa to forget him etc. ,
6.ymir dies together with eren and the titan powers leave the world and all existing titans degrade into sand (also Jean, conny, gabi etc.)
7. the titan shifters don't have their power anymore and are normal humans and ofc they are depressed af just like mikasa was in ch.139,
8.the scene with Levi and the scouts where he salutes for the first time happens but sasha, conny and jean are also there as "force ghosts" and the scene with bird-eren putting the scarf around mikasa for the last time also happens,
9. 90% of the humans have been killed and the remaining 10% make peace negotiations with eldia,
10. historia names her child eren because HE IS THE FATHER (they used farmer boy to hide the fact that eren is the real father and he agreed to play along bc he felt bad for bullying historia)
11. eren loved mikasa but couldn't have a relationship with her so she wouldn't be so devastated when he dies
12. he had the baby with historia to buy zeke time and bc historia wanted the baby to be his (the reason for her being so depressed looking is bc she knew that eren will die and that the rumbling will happen and bc she developed love for eren)
All this would be enough for 3-5more chapters so aot would conclude with about 143 chapters.
I can't believe this is way better than the original ending. So from the start eren was just a jerk simp who obeyed ymir like wtf is this...Where's the freedom? Where is the "I'm going to keep moving forward until my enemies are destroyed " can't believe I supported him all along. Its also isayamas fault for butchering eren's character in few dialogues

Getting rid of the Titan powers would never guarantee peace between Eldia and The rest of the world. This is like America abolishing slavery in 1865, just because slavery was abolished didn’t mean that Americans would immediately start treating African Americans equally, you had separate bathrooms for colored people and etc. It will take years for peace to be established between both sides and eventually build a better world, Eren gave Eldia the chance to prosper. Leaving the spine creature as a mystery works perfectly because they will never know what it truly was just like the Big Bang we don’t know what there was before it. In the end this was still a rather fucked up ending since Eren didn’t gain his freedom. If it had ended with world peace that would have been a terrible ending as the concept of world peace is the one thing that even in the real world is impossible to accomplish with all our differences. If he had gone ahead with the rumbling he would not have gained TRUE freedom, freedom built on genocide is not TRUE freedom. Essentially his desire for freedom turned him into a monster. Hopefully in the anime they expand more on this.

3- Hullicegenia just disappeared, with even no screen time, Eren could have easily prevented it from living any longer, he didn't have just to straight up die for hullicegenia to be dead
4-WHAT IS THE PATHS REALM? , where even did it go? , what happened to it?
5-Warhammer titan abilities were never used, SASHA DIED FOR NOTHING, that whole arc was only for sasha meaningless death
6-armin talking jutsu to fix the world
7-What did Eren achieve???, he just exposed his friends and paradise for more danger, he killed 80% of the world and left the other 20% to eventually kill eldia as they r better in technology and paradise lost its power which is titans!!

I still very much appreciate Isayama for creating SNK/AOT and all the hidden meanings he incorporates in his story and characters, but the final chapter could've been better. That's all.

Honestly I’m hating that everyone is acting like if you didn’t love the ending, you are just whining because it didn’t go the way you wanted. Hell no, this last at least 3 chapters have really big problems with plot/storytelling, characters arcs, and overall feel really rushed and out of place with what has been this manga for the most part. For all the flaws that you pointed out, I feel like Isayama deserved to be criticized a lot for how he handled the ending arc, and people shouldn’t blindly defend him like they’re doing, delegittimazing all the criticism.

To those who didn't understand why eren vented and the Unanswered questions that was misinterpreted as a plot hole should read this:
A selfish yet selfless and a tragic end for the 2000 year mastermind named "Eren Yeager"
Let's view things in a positive way
Eren wasn't actually butchered, the ending showed how a human can be selfish and selfless at the same time before they die and eren is the epitome of the latter.
Well written characters aren't perfect characters as a human being but perfectly written characters are flawed like human beings who portrays and gives their readers a sense of realism to some certain aspects, even though it's cringe and lame to the readers due to the fact that eren manifested a selfish side of him that he wanted to live with his friends and mikasa before dying makes it more realistic and that's what I love about him, it added more layers to his character ever since chapter 123 and 131 when it shows that he sympathizes with the people living outside the walls.
In the end the protagonist that who we taught is a chad was just a normal and flawed human being who has humane emotions nothing more nothingless, not a monster just like what he told ymir back in chapter 122, she's not a God she's just a human being maybe that's why eren and ymir understood each other, It was never butchered but this was his true desire all along as it was hinted in chapter 123 when he told mikasa "what am I to you?" ... But people was obsessed with the facade eren showed throughout the entire timeskip.
The "my war" lyrics made more sense and more relevant now, "angels playing disguised with devils faces" was so accurate and its just eren putting up a tough facade. The eren we saw in chapter 89-123 was nothing but a facade all along but my dude was still hurting since he already knew what's to come, my dude put up with the great act tho, still a king taking the lelouch route even though it didn't end pretty well but it's more realistically written.
Ymirs true desire has been hinted way back since chapter 122, she had Stockholm syndrome which is pretty similar to mikasa's obsession to eren but not entirely similar. Eren would've run away with Mikasa back in chapter 123 if her she answered differently, it's like an ultimatum since eren in chapter 123 was rather selfish in that moment.
He's just a dude who just goes with the flow of the events, the events set by his own future self, A time paradox to be precise.
-Eren killed Carla just to not create an alternate timeline. If he didn't kill her then she would've eaten bertholt thus armin wouldn't get to inherit the colossal titan. It already happened so eren just accepted destiny, it was impossible to bring his mother back so he just go with the flow of the events because he knew there is a future for paradis.
-Stole the founding titan by manipulating his dad for his own convenience.
-Manipulated past attack titan shifters from every era just for him to be born.
People kept saying alliance surviving against thousands of titan shifters was an asspull but it really wasn't. Eren technically gave them plot armor by restraining the past titan shifters because ymir a slave in her whole life wanted to see something that she didn't get to experience and that is hat occurred in the last 3 chapter:
Chapter 137 Armin presented hope to ymir
Chapter 138 Mikasa presented love to ymir
Chapter 139 Eren presented freedom to everyone including ymir
ENDING was somewhat rushed but good at the same time
The ending was pretty realistic, it was an open one. Eren and erwin was right as long as there are humans the fighting will last forever. Eren failed to destroy the world now the people from other nations plans to retaliate but the yeagerist managed to expand their military power with the aid of the hizuru nation for a preparation or contingency plan. Totally different from code geass ending but eren and Lelouchs intention is very similar to some very extent but eren died being true to himself.
Eren Yeager wasn't a slave to his ideal but rather his destiny that he created for himself.

They're making the exact same points you and alot of other critiques make like the plot holes, Eren killing his mom, Ymir and Worm Kun ret-con, the sudden romance.... Isayama messed up bad! They're even making the "Reiner why did my mom have to die" joke. Some are burning their AoT merch cause of that awful ending!
