this woman's live performances are incredible. i went to see her a few weeks ago in albuquerque. i expected her to be awesome and she exceeded those expectations. i was floored.
+Dellie Jonut Whoah, that subwoofer felt almost too good! Had to light a cigarette after that session. Annie kicks sonic ass, I tell you! BTW, your moniker reminds me somehow of a word-game I once devised in my callow youth (while high, admittedly) which simply involved getting someone else gravely suffering from extreme intoxication to chant the words "Dunkin' Donuts" over and over -- but each time altering it by adding as prefix a successive letter of the alphabet: A-unkin' A-onuts, Bunkin' Bonuts, etc. Simple, no? But these dissipated characters would usually struggle (comically) in vain to finish the series, because they'd get stuck in an endless limbo-loop at some particularly piquant permutation (Gunkin' Go-nuts, say, or Lunkin' Lo-nuts, or even Nunkin' No-nuts) which they found too fascinating to let go of. Well, simple minds, simple pleasures, as they say. Cheers!
What a great version of this great song , an extremely difficult song to play , & sing . Annie is a phenomenal songwriter, musician-vocalist, & performer, she is truly unique in the best possible way. Bob. G
i am absolutely in love with this song. I have NEVER heard anything like this before! It makes me think of Tim Burton's movies and dancing xD Your Awesome!
oh my i can't believe i forgot about this song!!! it's so unique...i wish i could hear more music like this :) (this her best song of them all!{to me})
"Transfixed",, yes, a very perfect word for describing this performance. And I feel the same way, still coming back here time and again, to wash out my mind from the usual offerings that fill the airwaves nowadays. The performances of all 3 of the Dumbo sessions are raw, heartfelt, and reveal the true person and talent that is Annie Clark.
the emaculate combilation of these pronounced notes and the want for music proves that there is a god and there is acreator praise creator not creation
Once again, stunned. I can't believe the huge talent hiding beneath that pretty face. I really hope she tours Europe soon... Does anybody know something?
A young woman with chops, ideas and stage presence playing with a minimum of the trappings of a star - no makeup, no plunging gowns, no flashing lights. In other words, the most encouraging musical experience I have been a part of since my first Genesis albums - which - oddly enough - this performance reflects perfectly.
@StephenDeFilippo I asked my audio production teacher about the microphone she uses, he said it's effects which make her voice sound like that, it's doesn't have too much to do with the microphone. I can't recall what effects you need to get your voice like that but I remember he said something about turning the highs off.
She's using an electro harmonix POG, you can see it in the video. You can also achieve a similar effect with a digitech whammy on the plus octave up function with the guitar's volume rolled back to about 5. Listen to the intro of My Iron Lung by radiohead for to hear the digitech.
If there's no record stores round you, try amazon or something of that ilk. It's widely available in England, I know that much! The album's called "Marry Me", by the way. I've just looked on the US version of amazon, it's $13.97 for the album which annoys me seeing as I paid £15 from HMV in England! Still, worth every penny!
A veritable one-woman band. Gee, I wonder if she ever made good after this? So much promise shown here! -- but you know the music biz eats 'em up and spits 'em out. Cheers!
@StephenDeFilippo She is using a secondary microphone, nothing special about it, but with effects on it separate from the main microphone. It seems to have a stationary filter on it that is cutting out certain frequencies making it sound like it is degraded as if by older radio transition. Look into band/low/high pass filters for that kind of effect.
This is my favorite performance of her. From time to time I come here to rewatch it... so powerful and beautiful
Same, doing same. :)
@@javyjavyjavyjavy same, doing same.
Same thing ♥
she's a genius.
Agreed. There is such a rawness to this version that makes it sound so gothic yet garage rock.
Magical performance, man this feels so nostalgic. I discovered her more than ten years ago, and she still amazes me.
So great. Never seen anyone else like her.
These are probably the earliest youtube uploads of St. Vincent. 12+ years, and still not even enough recognition, so well deserved.
Awesome. What great talent. Very rare to see an artist who writes their own material. She's amazing.
Genius never gets old
I love how she makes the guitar into a harpsichord/one woman orchestra!
needed to look this song up today.

Amazing, raw, powerful, unique. These words are pale... just listen.
But im deaf

Hauntingly beautiful!!! It's very, very impressive that her singing did not interfere with her guitar playing. Very cleverly done!
Just got reminded about this. Had to hear it again.

This is one of the neatest songs I've ever heard. I love the guitar in it. I prefer this version over the album one.
She's unique. One of my biggest inspirations. I love her.

And today, Prayers for those in Paris, as Paris is burning.
I heard in my head this version of the song whole day... and in the evening... I saw in the TV, the Cathedral is burning... very sad news.
i want to live in DUMBO so bad!!!! the big art influence there is awesome.
I agree -still her best song.
I like both versions for different reasons. The album is produced very well.
this is such a great song, and i really love this version of it.
I feel so many powerful emotions listening to her 😢😢❤❤❤❤❤

this gem made me fell in love with Anne years ago and here i am now still
She's just awesome in her own right. Beautiful!
the emaculate combilation of these pronounced notes and the want for music proves that there is a god and there is acreator praise creator not creation
Now THIS is a real musician!
Once again, stunned. I can't believe the huge talent hiding beneath that pretty face. I really hope she tours Europe soon... Does anybody know something?

+Nuthine Atholl She just won a Grammy for her self-titled album...
+Nuthine Atholl Yeah, she's probably waiting tables now at some restaurant in her home town ; )
Thanks.

whoa like scary good
you are beautiful st vincent ;)
Holy shit
I play her music on my show, and I usually play bands from Vancouver. Obviously a unique talent too good to pass up even if she isn't local.
I was thinking of the "Live at Sine" ep that Jeff Buckley put out before he recorded Grace. I see what you're saying about Hallelujah too though.
A prodigy
I am in love with this girl
what kindve microphone is she using for that warbly affect?
I have fallen into the spiral around her little fingers
Where can I go to audtion in her band!? She's an amazing musician!
She does another version for la Blogotheque - it's acoustic, but also better than the album version. Also, you can download a copy of that video.
