This edition is by far the best quality edition of the LotH in the USA. I am a big boycotter of the low-quality goods of CBP. The day they are gone wont come soon enough. Cheap 1970s Catholicism. I appreciate the hardcover and size of the Mundelein Psalter. Quality is lightyears ahead of the CBP volumes. If you are going to start the LotH - get this edition. Maybe $10-$20 more than CBP Christian Prayer. Spend the extra money for superior book
Catholic Book make the ugliest books around, it seems, and if they don't , they are certainly trying. Thanks for the review. At the price, I think I can skip this one, but I've long been curious about it, and so your review was what i needed.
Not really that much more relative to quality. Let's be honest CBP is why I stopped praying the LotH American edition. CBP personifies the 1970s felt-banner bell-bottom Catholicism of the post-conciliar era.
Seems an interesting book but goodness me, it’s pricey. I look forward to your more detailed review when you’ve been praying with it for a while. Practical use is everything.
When I prayed the LotH I used this volume. It was a much nicer, thoughtful presentation of the modern office. And it has musical notation. I am an avid anti-CBP activist. They produce low-quality materials at a a high price. The primary reasons I stopped praying the LotH was (1) the translation is God-aweful. The post-conciliar liturgical movement sought out to banish beautiful language. Banality is the name of the game for modern Catholic Liturgy. (2) The quality of materials of post-V2 Catholicism is exceptionally low. Again, lowest common denominator is the exemplary regards to matrrials and beauty.
Interesting. I feel that the Mundelein Psalter is probably an introduction to chant. St. Dunstan’s maybe nicer but it is also a different rite than the modern Roman Rite. It is a combo of Sarum and Anglo-Catholic
Cool review, especially given it was on the spot. While as you point out it is a little bit cleaner and more “professional” than CP, like CP it’s also just morning/evening/night prayers right? And it’s about twice the price, and CP is way smaller and easier to handle from the looks of it. So unless I really, really wanted to chant the office it seems a bit of a hard purchase to justify… but I really do value smaller books so that plays in.
Yes, just morning, evening, and night. There are a lot of pros and cons. I was only able to justify the price because I racked up amazon points. I would not have gotten it otherwise.
I just got this book with an Amazon gift card and points. It is a beautiful volume and I have begun to use it. A little daunting but already at day three am into the rhythm.

It can be difficult to get into praying the office with rhe current translation. They are changing it
I hear the chant in this a bit too simplistic, and that the St Dunstan psalter is better. I have neither, by the St. D is much cheaper.

Something tells me I should have taken music theory in high school…
Especially since Orthodox chants are so beautiful

Christian Prayer has that postconciliar font 🙃
That is a great way of putting it!
lmao i’m using the term “postconciliar font” from now on. mannnn that’s good. why all this stuff uses it I have no idea.
