I think this was more about showcasing the actual show and not the guests over talking. Just my opinion. Gillis is one of my favorites, but for a big ten year anniversary it would be weird to make it more about the guest comedian than the show itself.

I think it was award for them too. As famous as Joe is, if you notice, he usually shys away from jokes related to race / sex, etc. Like he looks physically uncomfortable/embarrassed.
I've seen quite a few guests do this, they either get really akward or walk off stage depending how potentially offensive the jokes get.
