The Solar System to scale

- The whole Solar System. Real Size. Real Scale. Real Time. Or about so...
-----
My 7 years old son asks me to do a space video, showing the "real" sizes of the Solar System.
While trying, I realize that it is actually impossible to show the System truly to scale, respecting sizes, distances, and times. That is something I've never realized so far.
I then started to change the video from "making a real size Solar System" to "explaining why it is impossible to make a real size Solar System."
So, here is the result!
-----
I made the video only on After Effects, using only surface pictures of the planets. If you're interested in a tutorial on how to do this kind of video, please ask for it in the comments.

Lors of comments ask about the time scale of the last part of the video. It is indeed km/h, but at a Time scale of 1 day = 2 seconds. - Наука
And remember that if the solar system was scaled down to the size of a quarter, the Milky Way would be the size of the United States
Woahhhh
A quarter of what?
@@xicex9851Rose Nylund, is that you?
@@Buzz69Lightyear When does a quarter of a planet become a star? Prove it!
@@xicex9851😜 … a 25 cent coin in USA or Canada is referred to as a “quarter” 🤪
God can you imagine watching this in an IMAX theater with 3d glasses?! No crappy dialogue, no quips, no comedic drivel. Just a cinema-grade presentation with amazing non-invasive audio.
I would love that.
And he isn't finish😅

This is by FAR the BEST solar system video that I have EVER seen, including the one that I have seen at the planetarium when I was a kid! I am totally astounded by the quality and accuracy of this video. I wonder if you are going to do more about the galaxy and then possibly the universe, I think that those would be mind-blowing, but I am sure it will take quite some time to actually produce them!
This is where I want to be within a year.
universe is to big
Really? It's full of mistakes.
First off: Venus is shown rotating far faster than its solar orbit , when they are actually almost the same with Venus having a day longer than it's year.
The stuff about mercury orbiting so much faster than Neptune doesn't correlate to the image shown. Why does mercury speed up and Neptune slow down?
@@listerofsmeg884 The first point makes a bit of sense but it wasn't intended to be perfect. The second point literally explains itself. Mercury orbits so much faster than Neptune, so consequently, Mercury would speed up and Neptune would slow down when comparing the traditional model with a model depicting time correctly.
"Full of mistakes" is not what I would call it. Your comment has more mistakes than the video, so stop acting like you know what you're talking about.
@@listerofsmeg884 Ok, if it's so wrong, why don't you make one?
Music 10/10

I came across this because I was considering doing a similar project in Unity. Well forget considering! This has inspired me! Thank you, sir. When I complete it I will acknowledge this channel.
I will be delighted, don't forget to acknowledge me when it'll be done!

Thanks for creating such a perfect visualisation! It's very useful for kids and adults alike. Can't wait to see more like this
You really need to hire a voice actor. It would suit a production such as this.
😊thanks for making this video. hope I get more like this
Everything about this was not only educational but very enjoyable. Well done.
Watched this video just to pass a few minutes. Learned more about the solar system in ten minutes than in all 12 years of school. Fantastic!
This is a different level of professionalism
This video is exceptional! It’s by far the best visualization of our Solar System. The music was so calming and not too distracting. The explanations of time and space, and how everything needs to be put into scale just to actually get an idea of just how massive space is was amazing. I loved this video. Thank you for taking your time and effort to make such a well crafted video with quality.
There's another great video by ogniank, "Riding Light", with real-time speed of light traverse through the solar system. If it was shown in this video, you'd only reach the earth. It's 45 minutes long, and only reaches Jupiter. If it carried out to Neptune, you'd have to watch a 4.5 hour video, with almost nothing in it. To Voyager, would be a 22-hour video, which has reached the boundary of solar radiation; the true end of the system.
@@michaelscott-joynt3215 The comments were very funny under the "Riding Light" vid but I thought this video is much more enjoyable.
This is not a real thing bro
This was truly a great video. The fact that you visualised the size of the sun at each planet's distance is just marvelous!
My son and I, fall to sleep to this video a few times a week.
Thank you
this comment is so realistic because i do too
After 33 years I get it now. I finally understand the solor systems. Education is very important in life. I still love biology and Science 🔭
Education is very important, so you need more of it! What is a solor system???
The best solar sys scaling video I've ever watched!!
Thanks a lot!
Thank you very much for doing this. I was ever curious to have it visualized and you brought it to the world and you made my day, in fact the best day of this year. Thank you!
Thank you!

The most incredible thing about the universe is we have billions of celestial bodies floating on vacuum (or air). What is holding everything up? Creation is beautiful. Thank you God.🙏🙏
This is the most beautiful and impressive animation depicting our solar system I have seen! I'm speechless!
I have been searching for this type of informed video, by far this is one of the best YT video to understand the scaling of our solar system, than many videos that I have watched in YT. Thank you so much for this video. Greatly appreciate your talent.
This video deserves way more likes. Thank you for not dumbing down like many RUclipsrs have done.
100%!!!
I didn't want it to end. That was awesome ,thanks a ton.
WAP gets 326+ Million views.. this one gets 807 likes. Amazing. Well done, and Standard Candles was a great song to accompany this.
wap still gold tho
*amazing beyond words. Just captivated me. The video is distinctive in every way*
I found myself feeling oddly relaxed by most of this. I think the music helped, but also this puts the daily worries of earth-bound life into perspective.
Can't stop watching this video. Never knew our solar system stretches 3 trillion Km. Thank you for the education; as everyone below has commented this is by far the best presentation I've ever seen. We are unquestionably so very insignificant.
Such distances! A humbling presentation. And how many solar systems are there in just our galaxy, one of billions? A consciousness expander to be sure.
Never seen such a well explained video about space, fantastic job
You can clearly see that from the inner four planets, the sun looks quite large with a certain extention, but from the outer planets (Jupiter and beyond), the sun looks just like a distant star at the night sky. By the way, the music strongly resembles the orchestra style of famous film composer John Barry, especially at 5:50 and later. It could e.g. be from the thriller "Body Heat" (1981) starring Kathleen Turner and William Hurt. Or, more known, from the 007 movie "Moonraker" (1979).
Your son is very lucky to have such a devoted parent. Being a father myself I am "blown away" by the quality.
You’ve gained a new subscriber. I can’t wait to see what other videos you make and have in store for your audience. :).
This was haunting and beautiful!
Yes it is
By far one of the best simulation of the solar system I've ever watched, good work buddy :-)
I keep coming back to this one, each time I have a reaction of a kid on the swings.
I was incredibly moved by this. Choked up, even. What a Creator!
I just want to say that I regularly return to this video as I love it so much.
This outstanding video in every respect should be nominated and then win the award for numerous categories. If there is such a thing as RUclips awards. As many people have said, I've never seen such an amazing, interesting and educational video like this. Space and everything in it makes sense to me now, thank you 👏💯🌟
In Otford, Kent, UK is a model of the solar system you can walk around. It covers the entire village. Well worth Googling.
I’m in love with this video, the audio and visual effects. Almost feels magical in a way befitting of space. 😢😢❤❤❤
I've been looking for a video like this for a while. Thank you for such great work!
This is so beautifully done! I found it while searching for a pre-made AE project file for a project I'm starting and you have shamed me into doing the work myself. Great job, Julien!
The eight planets in our Solar System, in order from the Sun, are the four terrestrial planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars, followed by the two gas giants Jupiter and Saturn, and the ice giants Uranus and Neptune.
These are the eight planets of our Solar System; however, there is a ninth, or at least, there used to be a ninth planet, namely Pluto. Pluto was considered the ninth planet of our Solar System until 2006, when it was declassified to a dwarf planet.
Fact: You can't find best scale video than this!
Very well done! It should be used in schools.
That’s how i got here lol

Thanks for such an awesome video. I can't wait to show it to my niece! You guys rock
This is the size of the the system of just ONE star...
The universe is insanely HUGE!!!
This is definitely the best video regarding our solar system scale. It deserves more views...👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️
Cheers !!! That was brilliant ! Good way to teach kids - and a whole bunch of grown ups as well. It reminded me first time I thought 'Why is this Mercator's projection map of Earth taught to kids? Are they being raised to navigate old vessels? Same goes for our Solar System and you did a brilliant job indeed I must repeat. Thank you !
Well done with all the planets, mercury, Venus, earth and moon, Mars, asteroid belt, ceres, Jupiter, saturn, Uranus, Neptune, kuiper belt, Pluto, humea, makemake, eris.

Wow… This is such a great video! Really put the planets’ size and distance in perspective for me. Well done!
Take all the planets and line them up next to each other. They would fit comfortably between Earth and our moon.
Wow you’re amazing! So impressed by the quality of these animations and great explanations along with it all :)
I've seen a lot of videos comparing sizes of planets, but I don't think anything can capture the reality of just how small we are like distance can. The sheer distance from the Sun to Eris is nuts, and the fact that our little blue world is a tiny speck somewhere within that distance is rather humbling. In the grand scale of the universe, we really are quite insignificant.
we reached saturn's biggest moon with all the resources we got, we're not insignificant, we're just limited
edit: i made this comment to boost your ego
Science teachers everywhere should use this video as an interesting and fun way to teach our solar system to their students!
My opinion is that what we call the universe, never ends. It is just that our present knowledge cannot reach out any further, but it gradually will. Remember, once we thought that the earth was the centre and flat. Well, some groups still think so.
I wish the speeds were just set to the same scale as the video motion - you’re actually flying through the solar system at something like Warp 4 here.
And now to imagine that our whole system is like nothing compared to the universe...
Great video!
This has my brain all twisted up like a pretzel.
woah, this is honestly the best video ive seen about how to visualise our solar system. its insane how huge it is
you should have more subscriber this is amazing!
And thank Leo for us all as well !!!
This is one of the best astronomy videos I've seen. I'm shocked it has only 2 million views so far.
That satisfied a very old curiosity for me. Thank you for taking the time to produce it so well.
This is the video of scaling our Solar System I always looking for :D thanks a lot for the video.
It's so intriguing how distant planets orbit around the same sun as we do.
"intriguing" is a great English word! Thank you!
Phantastic visualization.
Then on the other hand the distances in the universe are totally mind-boggling. Even hardcore astronomers have a hard time imagining the vastness of the universe.
Liked and commented because this is one of the best videos of information about our solar system I've ever seen. Very well done.
This video is a masterpiece
I wish this should get millions of views and likes
Best of luck ❤️
Just amazing. Great job!
The best explanation to talk with kid about real timing and size and space. Thank you!
An Extra ordinary presentation for better understanding of the solar system. Mind blowing in a word. Thank You very much.
The best i've seen so far. thank you.
This video is incredible! Great work!
Ok this is easily the best representation of this I’ve ever seen. Well done.
Fantastic made video. The size and scale of the planets, the sun, and distances is by far the most convincing I've ever seen. Reminds me of how small we are ....
Wow! This is awesome! Thanks so much to all of you for taking the time to create this. Seeing this and how huge and how far things always humble me. I'm awed by the Creator of space, time, and existence.
So am I.
Very cool. You could have also shown thier "up & down" trajectories as well and their orbital pattern, as those are better represented with 3d effects. I always thought that was cool.
I loved this video but god damn the shivers I've got from it were something else
Awesome!
Great video. Learned many
Excellent video! Thanks Leo!😄
But I have to point out that the speedometer or timescale are a not right here 3:02 It takes over 8 minutes at 1,000,000,000km/h (lightspeed) to reach earth.
Yep. I said the same thing. Should be km/s. But the video is great :)
you left my favorite: size to scale and distance to scale but those scales not the same, because both size to scale and distance to scale are some what easy to visualize, but they are very different, so both at the same time is imposible with the same scale, the wikipedia page has it and I think it is very usefull, but in general it was great
wow dude, for 3k subs i was not expecting that level of quality mister. you are many ten thousand billion trillion talent and it just great to saw you talent blossom butterfly and took off many amazing great
Extremely well done , i had a stellar trip !
Thank you , what a journey .👍
I thoroughly enjoyed that, thanks
To say "wow" is an understatement.
Thank you🌹
Such an amazing video!!
This is totally awesome. I would love to see a tutorial on how to make this video in after effects. I know this would be a lot of work. break it up into a series of shorter tutorials. Thank you!
By far the best visualization from our solar system. Everything seems accurate except the speed of getting away from the sun when it comes close to the planets. 500-2000 km/h looks a bit intensified.
In a simple way to explain the distance and the size of our Sun and Earth is this : Football field , on one of the ends of the football field is the Sun and on the other end is the Earth . The size of the Sun on this football field is a soccer ball , or a football ball , and the size of the Earth is a just one grain like a grain of sand or rice or wheat .
loved it!!! great choice of music as well ... very well done
This was a really wonderful video. Nice work:)

Thank you 1 million times for creating this video! So useful!
This is incredible animation of solar system! 🙏
Amazing video.
I've had a wonderful trip through the Solar System to scale. Beautiful and accurate, and very interesting. Love the details, too.🌈🦄⭐👑🦊

If you still don't quite know the distances, bear in mind that the distance between the Sun and Earth (1 AU) is 215 times the radius of the Sun.
@@marcusscience23 Thank you for your information.
1 AU = 215 R🔆
Distances from the Sun:
Mercury: 0.4 AU
Venus: 0.7 AU
Earth: 1.0 AU
Mars: 1.5 AU
Asteroid Belt: 2.3-3.3 AU
Jupiter: 5.2 AU
Saturn: 9.6 AU
Uranus: 19.2 AU
Neptune: 30 AU
Kuiper Belt and Oort Cloud: 30+ AU

great job. True scale and size properly depicted. The greatest shock is the moon/earth real size/distance
What stellar work! Thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you.
Such a beautiful work!!! Thank you so much.
One thing, though. I've been quite fascinated for a while with how slow the speed of light is considering the astronomical scale. In that sense, the "flight" between planets is actually way faster than the speed of light. For instance, the distance from Earth to Jupiter is 39 light minutes and 32 light seconds. I guess that strolling the solar system at warp speed is a bonus.
Yep and to further impress the reach of the Solar system consider that from the Sun to Neptune is over 3 hours at light speed. It's staggering how far out the outer planets are.
So much math and many expressions! great job!
