The Witcher 3 on Steam Deck - How to get 60fps with FSR at 540p!

- The Witcher 3 has trouble hitting 60fps using the resolutions that are available to users via the in game settings. By going into desktop mode and tweaking the game files you can have it run at 540p and use FSR to upscale the game back to a 720p image. Subscribe if you enjoyed this video!

I made a little program to set custom resolutions in The Witcher 3 for Steam Deck. You can use this with FSR!

thanks for this subbed looking forward to more useful steam config info!
I've been waiting for a video like this one ever since the system launched, so thanks! Really interesting to see how very taxing games can be pushed to reach 60 fps, I wonder if the same can be done for titles like Sekiro which would really benefit from a locked 60.
I'd be happy to look into it!
@@SteelLodge That would be awesome, thank you!
@@turnip5178 Hey Turnip I have a new video examining Sekiro with the Deck's new refresh rate update coming out this morning!
@@gosusteele I'm guessing you're Steel Lodge's second account? I was a bit confused for a second lol! In that case, I've already watched it and I really appreciate it, so thanks a lot for checking that one out! (P.S. RE4HD's video was very informative too and with a nice easter egg haha, keep up the good work!)
@@turnip5178 Haha you have discovered my secret identity. I will be posting a lot more soon, I appreciate the support!
Another way you can do this is by going into the properties of the Witcher 3 in steam. Go to general and you can select the resolution. Then force the resolution on internal and external display.
Inside the game you have to have it set to borderless window. Just an alternate way if you don’t have a keyboard or want to work in the files. Thanks for the vid!
Damn, I always wondered how do you edit the files within the game, this should get a video title rename cause I have been looking for this and couldn't find anything. Thanks for the video, very very very helpful! I am really curious how games would look at a way smaller resolutions 640x360 , 426x240 etc
No problem! I'm actually going to make a script pretty soon here that will make the process easier!
I used the same process to edit the resolution of skyrim se, but when I did, my game just closed the second it started. I did turn skyrim to windowed mode, but it still crashed.
Just out of interest, is this still working. Have followed instructions and no updated resolution is showing in settings.
I have a Problem idk where to find the User settings I have the Goty Edition and installed on a sd card can you help pls
i installed this game on my micro sd card the other night, played for 2 hrs and then realized it wouldn’t let me save due to lack of storage. i have at least 250 gbs left so that’s not the case unless it’s trying to save to my internal storage. that being said i have the sd card prioritized the two other games i’ve been playing have no issues what so ever. deleted and reinstalled witcher and i still have the same issue. cannot find anything online specifically related to steam deck. only thing i can find are forums from 2015-17 with PC users having a similar issue, but no official statement from the devs or steam, and no real concrete answer to the problem. pls help if you can. i really enjoy this game and i have a lot more fun playing it on the go than on my home console
Why would you install VSCode if Kate is available and is an excellent text editor.
So, 985x615 will get you the full screen height to max out screen size and still runs at 60fps. I tried it: works great!
Not worth. Most games are coded 16:9 and 16:10 resolution means a slightly zoomed in image
@@KneeGrowDoingKneeGrowThings Yes its worth, witcher 3 supports native 16x10 resolutions
Okay you know how when your in 3d person you see the map and the stuff that says b to jump for some reason is super small help
Great video thanks. Could you try halo infinite please, tried the same method but couldn't get it to work??
If I ever get my hands on a Steam Deck then I'm gonna do this okay?
Can you do a 540p 40hz/40fps lock video with some games? I would like to see how much battery can we squeeze thanks :)
I dont' see why not
Doesn't work for me. Is it due to recent update ? Settings revert back to 1280x800 on start. Fsr remains disabled.
Click the cog by the game and override the res
Without changing any settings the game runs at 11fps on my deck out of the box. I was assuming the game would start on deck with approved Deck settings. That doesn’t seem to be the case
hey, could you please tell how to get rid of black bars? I have set resolution to 1280x800 but still experiencing these bars
I recommend you guys to do 960x600, that way you dont have black bars and you still have fsr ☺️
I'll have a video up tomorrow regarding a script I made that will easily let users set a 16:10 or 16:9 resolution
@@SteelLodge for any game?
@@ReverbRising specifically for TW3
1120x700 works too (obviously more demanding)
@@Dizintegrator at that point just use the 1152x720
Honestly I'd rather run at native res, mostly medium high settings and lock at 40, due to frame times 40 is actually the mid point between between 30 and 60 and the game looks about as good as on a desktop
Try out 1152x720. Everything to medium with texture quality and detail level to high. Turn on the FSR and put to it to scaling level 3. In my opinion it puts out a cleaner image and cleans up the TAA a bit so it doesn’t look so blurry
@@kickass2733 to be honest, yeah I was kinda suprised FSR 1.0 looks sharper than native taau
30 fps is better higher res and longer battery life
Why not 1080p and set FSR to performance? It will render at 540p and upscale to 1080
It still has worse performance because its upscaling to a higher resolution than 800p
@@ZeroChoices native 800p is much more resource intensive than fsr 1.0 540 to 1080
640x400p is the way to go IMO with integer scaling on !
You don't need to do this anymore fyi
why?
Why
You still need to do this. If you're referring to the steam update that allows custom resolution, none of their offered resolutions are 16:10 aspect ratio. The only one is 640x400 but that's half the resolution of the steam deck.
I rater prefer playing at HIGH at 30fps
still looks better than the switch version
No😂
