      You're welcome! And thank you for watching! Most people prefer to hate on others, instead of trying to take the time to understand them. Understanding someone doesn't excuse their behaviour, but it does remind others that few people are truly all evil or all good. We're all just people, and a mix of both.

      I am more angry with Varg for perpetrating such violence and destruction just because he had something to prove to Euronymous!! He wanted to "one-up" everything and everyone!! Euronymous, sure, was a prick and goat for leading Dead into self-destruction, and Varg into doing more and more to prove his worth!! It was Varg for everything else. and he's still alive, and Euronymous and Dead are not!! This is wrong on so many levels, in my opinion!!

    Tbh, I’ll always have a soft spot for this film as it’s what got me interested in Mayhem (I know I’m late to the party, I grew up a punk rather than a metalhead 🤣). I think it’s a fun film that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Truth be told, the scene of Pelle cutting himself made me pass out COLD the first time I saw it! I felt like the biggest weenie.
    Edit after finishing the video: you sound exactly like me when I’m talking about Mayhem! Thank you for actually viewing Pelle and Øystein as the CHILDREN they actually were. I mean, neither of their brains ever got to finish developing.

    • @EveryFairyDies
      @EveryFairyDies  11 месяцев назад +1

      Nice to see punk's not dead 😁 Yeah, that scene broke my heart, I wanted to just reach through the tv and stop him, make it not happen (even though it was Jack Kilmer and not actually Pelle, lol).
      I think my age helps me see these guys as the kids they were, and gives me that insight. My edgelord stage wasn't as bad as theirs, but I did have one, and I cringe looking back a little, but I realise that it was part of my development into adulthood. I think a lot of Mayhem fans are either still young, or don't really look at their history from that perspective (some of them are still edgelords, just old ones with mortgages and kids 😆).
      Thanks for watching!

      What. I agree with you but they did not die at 16 or even 19.
      A 25yo (Euronymous) is not a child by any stretch. 22 yo (Per) is when ppl graduate from college, so *maybe* still "young adult"/late youth. But never would I call anyone in their 20s "children". Unless you just mean they were children when they created the band and the long term issues leading up to the end.

    Once you know the history, read the Zines, read the letters, interviews etc. it's hard not to feel like something is missing in this movie. All the stories and quirks, the personalities, it seems shallow once you've researched for a long time. But there's only so much one can squeeze into a one-two hour movie. I really really missed the tour tho, I feel like that was such an important part of Mayhems history..

    • @EveryFairyDies
      @EveryFairyDies  Год назад +13

      Honestly, they could have made a movie about the tour alone and I think fans would have enjoyed that. But all biopics are shallow wikipedia articles which never get into the full story, and it would be nice if the formula were shaken up and changed.

    great documentary and breakdown. i think i've watched the movie 3 times since the release.
    i wasn't aware Jonas wanted to make this into a series. A series (even if only 6-8 one hour long episodes) would have given Jonas much more underlying story content and characters to delve into. A 90-minute film has to rush through much of the story that took years to unfold in real life. It would have been nice to see Varg's character before he created Burzum, when he jammed with the Immortal guys in Old Funeral, as well as the relationships and early stories of other Norwegian bands and members that were sprouting up at the time like Darkthrone, Emperor, etc.
    I've been into blackmetal since that time period when they all started showing up in zines and tape trading was still commonplace. Mayhem was one that I never got a response back from, probably because they were getting A LOT more letters and postal packages than what is depicted in the movie. I still have all my letters and tapes from those days, as well as the Scandanavian zines I would buy through mailorder. At some point I plan to make a display case (shrine) in my studio with all that stuff. It was an exciting time in metal music history, for sure.

    • @EveryFairyDies
      @EveryFairyDies  Год назад +1

      That's so cool! You gotta send me photos of your shrine one day, that would be epic to see.
      A series is always better; more streaming platform should take advantage of people's desire for more information into the lives of these famous people and events. Like "The Crown" but for music icons (and more accurate). They're really missing a great opportunity here, as they could explore the history of bands/musicians that had such a massive impact on music evolution, not just metal. Maybe I should go poke them with a stick and suggest it. 😂

    Finally a video that isn’t shit talking Lords of Chaos! I like Lords of Chaos, when I first watched it I had no idea what it was about, I had never heard of Mayhem, I just watched it because I’m a big fan of Rory Culkin and I wanted to see what it was about, if you ignore all of the historical inaccuracies, it’s a really good movie (not amazing by all means but in Biopic Standards it’s pretty good) you got a great cast (I never thought i would see a movie with Rory Culkin, Wilson Gonzales Ochsenknecht, Valter Skargsgård, and Jon Øigarden in the same movie and yet here we are!) great acting moments even with some cringey moments there’s still some good acting moments, it’s just overall a great movie even with all its faults. After I watched Lords of Chaos, I actually listened to some of Mayhem’s music just to see if it’s something I would be interested in and while Black Metal isn’t my kind of music (I’m more of a alternative Rock, post hardcore, pop punk Emo kind of person) I’m glad i got to experience and find out about a new genre of music! So Lords of Chaos, great movie if you want something that won’t take itself seriously, it’s a fun movie, that’s it.

    • @EveryFairyDies

      I suspect a lot of the hate it gets are from poser edge lords who are determined to hate anything that doesn't conform to their idea of what they think happened.
      But I agree, it's not the greatest movie, but it's not as bad as everyone claims, and is certainly more accurate than it gets credit for.

    I 100% agree with you, but i givr the film a higher rating, maybe 8.5/10. Its well acted and well done. Even the scenes with supposed clumsy acting is meant to show a young man's insecurities when trying to create a character to play as a stage-persona. I sing black/death metal, I relate to all this 100%. And just like you, I absolutely adore the practical effects.

The movie captures the darkness aura well enough , and its open to much misunderstanding , mainly from nerds and hipsters today ... who wants to over-interprate everything to suit their own ass. It’s movie folks. Based on real events sure, but still a movie. And like with any movie there is creative license taken. If you want to pick it apart then go for it, but it does a good job of conveying the story of events in a general way. For somebody who didn’t know anything about these things they got the highlights. Again, If you want to pick it apart fine, but it doesn’t claim to be a historical documentary.

      As a failed filmmaker I love over-analysing movies, and when watching a movie that claims to be based on/inspired by a true story, I like to do my own research to find out the real story. Sadly, not everyone is as interested or is way more naive than me 😆 Since I dived deeply into this movie after I watched it, I wanted to share my over-analysis with others. That allows me a certain level of legitimacy for my obsession, instead of simply being a weirdo who needs to calm the fuck down. 😂😂

  • @bla2381

    great video, really underrated channel, i think lords of chaos actually is a lot better and accurate than people say, the subtle details that are actually real, like the t shirts they wore in the same instances as in the actual mayhem photos, even Atilla's son is in a scene, so it wasn't disconnected from actual black metal some black metal bands supported the film too, like watain, in fact the film was being guided by and eastern European black metal band that helped with the style and scenes.
    the film was atmospheric for me, i really liked it, rory culkin was a great fit for the character of euronymous, and its not as bad as people say, it could have definitely been worse, it could have been directed by someone who had no clue about black metal.
    edit: watched the whole video now, you summed up everything i was saying, even better, absolutely agree

      Thank you! Nice to see someone else who also enjoyed the movie. And I agree, Rory's performance was really great. I didn't know Watain had supported it, that's cool.
      I watched an interview with Rory (the one I show a quick clip from) where he mentioned how Mayhem and other Black Metal musicians dissed the movie, but he put that down to that being part of their Black Metal facade, given they all were on set at various points and seemed to like the fact the movie was being made.
      Jonas is also a really good director, I really enjoy his other films, too. And his music videos, of course!

    Great vid! Thanks for including my comment about how there wasn’t enough snow 😆 👍🏻
    My only corrections:
    5:41 you mention that vocal duties on Deathcrush were shared between Necrobutcher Euronymous, Manheim, Maniac and Messiah. However, the pictures you show are of Necrobutcher, Euronymous, Maniac, Maniac, and Maniac. Also, Necrobutcher and Euronymous did vocals on the Pure Fucking Armageddon demo, but the vocals on Deathcrush, were done by Maniac and Messiah.
    (AFAIK Manheim has never recorded vocals.)
    Mayhem had also had a couple of other vocalists by then. Their very first was a guy named Nils Svensson, and very briefly, Torben Grue from the band Vomit.
    It is a a bit of a letdown that there was no mention of the prior vocalists (Maniac is an especially interesting guy who influenced Euronymous a lot, just like Pelle). It’s also a letdown thy Manheim literally disappears and is never seen again-in real life he actually stayed friends with Euronymous up until euro’s demise. A fun scene would’ve been him coming into Helvete after having gotten a stuffy office job.)
    You also mention that Blackthorn was recruited after Euronymous‘s death, but according to the LOC book, he had already joined the band as a second guitarist, then quit at some point because of the toxicity and drama in the band, and was considered by Necrobutcher and Hellhammer as a replacement guitarist before they knew about his role in the murder. You also mentioned that he has never spoken of the murder, but he did actually give two interviews about it that are available in the LOC book.
    Personally, I think title cards explaining what happened to all of the characters (and mentioning the release of the De Mysteriis album with Varg’s and Euronymous’s parts together) would have given the movie an air of authenticity that it somewhat lacked, but to each their own.
    Great job though!

    I saw the film not long after it came out, having no prior knowledge of black metal history, and I rewatched it again recently. Love it just as much now, and in particular I love that chicken bone scene that you pointed out as disliking.
    If it was proven that those things were actual skull fragments then it is disingenuous of the director to pretend otherwise, but I thought that that reveal was a fantastic conclusion to Euronymous's character arc in the film. Basically symbolizing that the whole scene was fake to begin with, and that he's over it. In a way he fools the audience too with that trick, and it humanizes him more in retrospect, knowing that he wasn't so fucked up as to take bits of his dead friend's skull for necklaces.

    • @EveryFairyDies
      @EveryFairyDies  Год назад +2

      I agree it's a great scene, Rory and Emory are both really good in that moment, it's probably my favourite scene in the whole movie. And I totally understand why the director made that choice, for exactly the reasons you've listed.
      Weirdly, I find it very disrespectful. I'm all for humanising Euronymous, but I felt it kind of cheapened the real-life fact that Euro basically commodified the body of someone he knew for clout.

      I agree. Too many people forget that movies are fiction, even ones that are based on true stories. At least this one was honest in its opener that it wouldn't be 100% accurate.

    This movie resides in a category I like to call “the lie that tells the greater truth”. A lot of the details are probably goofy…Varg going on fucking sprees, timelines and things of that nature. But at the end of the day, what was Mayhem? A band of awkward, socially weird kids who stumbled into enough controversy to gain international attention. Let’s just call it like it is. I think that Dead and Euronymous were probably *a lot* less mysterious than black metal fans would have you believe. Varg has proven himself to be an ultra right wing maniac who isn’t above murder. Churches were burned, regardless of who was responsible. People were killed…and the most mediocre metal genre in history (sorry…) was born as a result. I like Burzum, I like certain, early Mayhem cuts and some stuff from the various “one man bands” that have popped up…but let’s not pretend that these kids invented the wheel. They played trem licks, minor chords and disturbing intervals with famously bad production.

    • @EveryFairyDies
      @EveryFairyDies  6 месяцев назад

      "The lie that tells the greater truth", I like that! And I agree, people love to mysticise these guys, make it all out to be way more 'crazy' and 'edgy' than it actually was. While I think they did create something unique musically, as you say, they aren't the reinventors of the wheel people like to paint them as.

  • @DJPhukk
    @DJPhukk 9 месяцев назад +1

    Look, I'm an old bastard by now. Still actively making music though. But... the whole Mayhem lore thing is frankly pointless, albeit entertaining. Yes, they layd down a lot of ground work. But, they were a bunch of kids with whatever issues. Hear me out... I am quite sure the majority of black metal fans (not fanatics) are all pushing towards a grandeouis mid-life-crisis. So I honestly think we should just realise that the Mayhem saga was executed by a bunch of kids. If some teenagers or early 20-year-olds today did the same thing, we would most likely shrug it off as childish wankery.

    • @EveryFairyDies
      @EveryFairyDies  9 месяцев назад +1

      Oh, I already shrug it off as childish wankery. I think, as you say, it's the fanatics and edge lords who are the most interested in continuing the 'mystique' of Mayhem. I do wonder about how people like Necrobutcher and Fenriz have changed over the years, as while they're not as bad as Varg, they did kind of buy into their own bullshit. Now they're in their 50s, I wonder how the real world forced them to grow up.

    This was a narrative movie. Its called historical fiction. Getting mad at this movie getting things wrong is like getting mad at shakespeare for Julius Caeser. It was a great movie. The character of Euronymous is a seperare entity from the person of euronymous etc, obviously. The creative liberties added to make it a cool movie were all sweet. Giving euronymous a girlfriend and having him trying to leave the scene at the emd was a great narrative touch. Who cares thats not what actually happened? Its a good story. Its also obvious that a lot of the stories from the people that were there were made up so you cant trust a lot ofbthe source material either.

    • @EveryFairyDies
      @EveryFairyDies  8 месяцев назад

      I don't disagree that this is an historical fiction movie, and I also enjoyed the original moments they created because I don't care for the way Euronymous is demonised by people. I liked how they humanised him and reminded people he was just an idiot edge lord kid.
      Having said that, I do think it's important a biopic have more accuracy than inaccuracy. Movies like Braveheart are an affront to everyone, whereas Titanic is brilliant despite the main characters not being based on any living/dead persons. I tend to classify Lords of Chaos as being more Titanic than Braveheart.

      Oh, "actual people", I get it - haha- so clever, so superior...I could never be superior, I just can't put in all the effort required to find out someone's ancestry or religious beliefs before I can allow myself to like them &/or accept them as a fellow human being. I just find it WAAAY easier to judge people on their actions & their behaviour towards myself & others. Guess I'm just too lazy to be superior.
