    I picked up a heavy sporterized Kar98k that I’ve been able to bring to life for a hunting rifle. Hornady 150gr Interlocks is what I use with that. My Gew 98 original always gets some eyes at the range.

      I had a Gew 98 until I sold it last year. It was in pretty rough safe and couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn lol, the bore was so shot out

      @@MontanaGunGuy I found mine in a barn while we were tearing it down. It’s a true WW1 bring back all matching numbers. The property owner said I could have it. The stock amazingly was still in great condition. Had to carefully disassemble the rifle then a gunsmith we soaked it and cleaned it for 4days. Then we reblued it. Only part that had to be replaced was the firing pen which was probably the reason it was dumped in the barn. Rifling is nearly in excellent condition. I got super lucky.

      The accuracy is ok, not great. I've charged the load since this video but before I was getting about five to five and a half inches but now closer to four inches.

  • @topturretgunner

    good video. Thank you for sharing. Question do you find that using fire formed brass in the same rifle trimmed to consistent case lengths improves accuracy of the round?

    • @MontanaGunGuy
      @MontanaGunGuy  4 года назад

      To be honest I really haven't. I have started to use a heavier load of 45 grains of powder and has improved the accuracy a little more. I have also used 150 grains soft points just to play around with but I have yet to try them out.

    +LifeOfaReloader I sure feel your vision pain trying to a good sight picture with bad eyes on my Yugo M48. The way I fixed that problem was to mount a long eye relief scope, where the rear iron sight used to sit. Let me tell ya makes a big difference. Great looking K98K, and looking forward to giving your load a try.

      The RCBS dies can be a little finicky at first, just make sure to use case lube around the opening of the case as well to ensure the case does not get stuck in the die

    Hi I just bought a Kar98k what book do you suggest to reload a 8mm mauser

    • @MontanaGunGuy
      @MontanaGunGuy  3 года назад

      The Lymans book that I was reading through is a good book but I have noticed through my reloading experience that the load data is a little lighter and it doesn’t show a lot of projectile variety. The Sierra reloading manual I find more helpful and it lists all the projectiles they offer for the caliber you’re reloading for with more powder options. I hope this helps and good luck to you, plus great buy!

    Why hollow points? Are they gentler on the Kar98k than full metal jackets?

    • @marcusshepard4010
      @marcusshepard4010 2 года назад +1

      I imagine they are just easier tk obtain and likely more accurate. Hollow point bullet designs are often used in precision rifle loads for accuracy. Interesting stuff. It's neither easier nor harder on the barrel

      You could stretch it to 5 or more if you're lucking but the casing with defiantly be showing sign of future failure such as rings around the case head and an enlarged primer pocket.

    • @joepangean6770
      @joepangean6770 4 года назад +1

      Depends on how well you take care of the cases (and rifle). Most degradation occurs during firing as the case lengthens from the heat and pressures, some due to difficult resizing dies (use lube). Each reload needs a measurement and then usually some trimming. The constant stretching, trimming and resizing weakens the brass and makes it thinner. Annealing the brass occasionally helps the neck resize and not thin out so dramatically. Eventually the stretch and resizing will weaken the case neck to a point that it crack, split or fold over. These cases should be discarded or cut down and re-necked for 7.92mm x 33. The base of the brass is thickest and should remain fine unless poor chambering and excessive head space (unsupported chamber pressures) cause split or cracks at base. These cases should be discarded and rifle should be smithed. I have loaded more than five times without issues of primer seating issues.
