All sides of the Guzheng are used, including the very acoustic wood for tapping notes. That's why when you buy one, they build it for you with the specific wood you want.
Hi, Mr. J - that masterfully played beautiful instrument is called a gu zheng or zheng, (according to the interwebs, lol), of Chinese origin, described as a stringed zither type instrument - apparently has a 2,500 year history. Fantastic song - thanks for reacting to this one!
Definitely look up the original, polyphia - playing god, to truly appreciate this! Original is an epic masterpiece in guitar work in its own right, you’ll appreciate it!
She’s playing an instrument, of Chinese origin, called Guzheng, with finger-picks, so her fingers aren’t the ones actually plucking on the strings (kind of like with a guitar, using a guitar pick)
The harmonics (muffled sounds) when left hand pinky touches the same string as the right hand plucks the string is among the technique with the highest failure rate for Guzheng players, it has like 50% success rate at best even with practice. You have to be touching the strings at the mid point of the suspended span simultaneously when plucking, as the whole row of bridges is varying distance for tuning. So not only you will be touching different point on every single strings (the usual trick is marking the points on the strings with chalk or marker before playing) If the timing is off you get inconsistent results of either a muted sound or simply unmuffled. She is making it look easy. Even on diploma grade (level 10) exam pieces the harmonics isn't played with such high frequency. This is a grade 10 piece for comparison. The harmonics is like a few notes near the end at best. ruclips.net/video/FDEaBONLWwE/видео.html
You just called it a Gouzheng at the beginning of the video. She is adjusting the tension and raising the pitch when she presses the other side of the nut i guess.
instrument in title Guzheng, it is Chinese. not all those palm mutes were mutes, most were harmonics, but still a thumbs up for the jam. Surprised it isn't as viral as the original

Guitarists may want to take to another level to playing the Guzheng. Haha
