Adding the little baby girl on the beach crying she needed a nap, was so hilarious and apropos. I know this is an older video, but each one is so interesting and the life skills you two have are tremendous. Wish I could go back and trade my BA in for those life skills and the ability to live off grid. You two are so wealthy in the things that really matter
What is positive? I am a relatively healthy retired senior and I have zero debt! I enjoy your channel Greg and Katie - you guys work SO hard. The wife and I both love your videos. We are both retired and have made our final move to a 5 acre parcel in Tennessee. We're on the final stages of completing our 30' x 40' shop complete with all the woodworking tools anyone could want or need. We have also just purchased a CNC machine and a laser engraver to keep us busy. We are looking forward to you completing your wonderful home. Good luck and God speed in all your endeavors .
I should have built a shop in the 3 years we have been up here. It's hard doing anything outside in the snow or in the extreme heat!

I contracted insulation for about 5 years and took pride in every building I did. About 80% of the homes I did were show homes, exposed basements (no drywall) and builder employee homes. You did a better job than about 95% of contractors do. Hats off for taking pride and I am sure it will make that home cheaper to heat for many years providing you take that much care on exterior wall treatment. BTW it's great to see a young couple building wealth with sweat equity! I wish there were more like you who don't bury themselves in debt.
BTW #2. I'd have your 12 yr old dog trained to protect my lap in no time flat. LOL
A part of the reason we are doing all the work out selves is quality, now I know there are going to be a few mistakes along the way, but at least I know how absolutely everything was done in this house.

Congratulations on the feat, you already have the location for this shelter, now it's just a matter of finishing it. Positive thing in our lives is that we have a land surveyor coming out in 2 weeks to define the parcel of land we will build on. Taking steps forward, hoping to break ground at the end of summer!!

In the first 3 years we were on the property I tore my ACL, LCL and fractured and tore my ankle, my body is becoming more flexible again and it's wonderful to be able to do things like run! Keep moving forward mark!

I mean this truely , I hope you get to reach for something that gives you as much peace and joy as we are experiencing.
We put vapor barrier on the wall, then horizontal strapping and ran the electrical on the inside of the vapor barrier. No need to poke holes, and it adds an extra 50mm of insulation, plus a thermal break so the studs don’t conduct heat all the way out to the siding. This is common practice in Norway.
Makes good sense! Because we have rockwool on the exterior there are no thermal breaks in the house. We made sure to caulk the holes we poked in the vapor barrier.

Congratulations on paying off the mortgage. My good news is that I'm well. In spite of being vaccinated, I contracted a mild case of Covid in early January. I still tested positive ten days ago but I'm back to good health again. We're at the end of what I hope is the last snow and cold wave of winter here in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I'm not a wintertime person and I'm ready for spring.
We have been lucky to dodge the virus ( though we were deathly sick in the beginning but there were no tests even at that time). Glad you are doing better!

We live in the north US we insulate with a paper backed insulation, it is a vapor barrier then we also staple up plastic. Like our cabin we did R19 floor ceiling walls all R19 now you are R22 in your ceiling we skimped. But the cabin is warm and cozy even when it's -40f. That makes it very cool when it's hot out.

Vapor Barrier. If it can't dry it will die. Where does the moisture go? I realize vapor barrier is code. Around windows and doors spray foam it. That will be where the condensation forms in the wall. Once you are a stud bay away it should be good. That cold from windows or doors will condensate and spread. Remember you want the ceiling to let moisture out either by passive or mechanical means.
Ceiling has a 2.5" gap for soffit vent, and we are installing a HRV to clean and replace air

Congratulations on paying off the mortgage! Such a good feeling I'm sure. So my good news is I am a 66 yo recently retired RN who bought 10 acres on a small lake in N. California. The home is super small and needs so much upgrading but I have trees galore, privacy and peace. Flooring is done. Painting is done. I've collected so much in my years and am purging as I go which feels really good. I watch your channel at night when all my work is done and find inspiration for things I want to build.
Trees privacy and peace are WAY more important than the size of your home! purging of things is my favorite thing to do. There was one time that I would call myself a "minimalist" but these days tools are super important and I need lots of them haha. Once the house is livable we plan on putting a ton of energy into the finishing work !

The purpose of the paper backed insulation is that the paper acts as a vapor barrier. The flaps on the edges of the paper is how you staple it to the studs to hole it in place so that it doesn't slide down over time.
Congratulations!! On Feb 1 of this year we celebrated 1 year of paying off our mortgage!!! Paid our 30 yr note in just 13 yrs. Debt free is where it's at!! Also, I appreciate you explaining the mositure barrier installation. We don't do that type of construction in Texas or most of the US so that makes sense now.
It's hard to think of something positive, when we lost our home to the recent flood that we had in Nov in Washington state. Then found out the state is buying our land due to flooding zone and will not give us the permits needed to rebuild. 🤢
So my positive, is we are all safe and our animals survived! Now we will buy property, build a new home on a big hill... not have a house payment! So that's all positive. We're going buy a 5th wheel and live on the land while we build... watching you Two give me a tremendous amount of relief that it's possible!❤️
I survived a stroke 6 weeks ago, and am thankful for another day of life.
You can do it!!! My good news is I moved close enough to my son and grandson that we can visit more often. Just remember, all of this will be a fond memory someday.

I remember the day we paid off our (latest) mortgage. We went to the pub and celebrated so much that the next day was a write-off. But then we're not building a house in the back of beyond! One word of advice: DON'T burn yourselves out. Have a break until you feel like diving into the build again.
We had a little headache the day after we paid ours off. A couple whisky sours to celebrate!

i's alright to feel a bit burnt out and tired...it's the middle of winter. Remind yourself how much you have achieved over the last year! built a waterproof and warm house and full time work, and paid off mortgage. and once the spring comes and the days get longer you will be rocking again. Stay in tune with nature and allow a bit of slowness in the winter.

Paying off your mortgage at your age is a massive achievement guys, You realize that it's the biggest millstone around our necks, not having to worry about it makes life so much easier. My middle daughter just gave birth to my 2nd grandson with her, of my three daughters I now have 4 grandsons. I now have two grandsons in school and 2 grandsons in Papa daycare. I would not have it any other way, I missed a lot watching my daughters grow up due to work now I see what I missed. Being a dad is amazing, being a Papa is priceless, keep a positive outlook you two are doing great.
