If you think about it, unless a person is very shrewd and knows how to handle himself, he/she can never survive in any industry, let alone a cutthroat industry like cinema. I've heard from some sources that Ilayaraja was actually a very soft-spoken and gentle person who was repeatedly insulted because of his caste. People would act very nice in front of him but call him "parayan" behind his back. Idhu ellaathunaalayum vandhadhu dhan Ilayaraja oda "headweight". Because he stood his ground and rose above all the casteist mentality of many people who surrounded him. People who have worked with him and have genuine respect for him have never said anything bad about him. In fact, those people are still grateful to Ilayaraja for elevating their movies (and careers, by extension) with his music.
He did have his faults, like everybody else. But the man was and still is extremely dedicated to his craft and is 100% honest in what he does. His work ethic is phenomenal. Aana adhellam yaarukum theriya matengudhu.
