Field Trip to Heart of Ohio Antique Center, in Springfield Ohio - Hunting Uranium Glass and More

- Today on @CoolStuffWithKyle, we take a field trip to Heart of Ohio Antique Center in Springfield Ohio. Shout out to them @heartofohioantiquecenter4814, heartofohioantiques.com/. On this trip, I hunt for uranium glass, and also radioactive Fiestaware and other pottery. This is done using a UV blacklight flashlight for uranium glass, and a Geiger counter for the radioactive pottery. I believe that by square footage, this is the largest antique mall in Ohio. It is also one of the top largest in the United States.
Items seen in this video include EAPG, vaseline glass, uranium glass, depression glass, Fenton Burmese, Fenton Cranberry, other Fenton glassware, two different pieces of confirmed radioactive pottery, and much more.

Some do, but usually most do not. They are few and far between in any of the antique malls I find them in. But as they say, shine your light on everything, and you may find some gems. Uranium marbles will glow, as well as ones containing cadmium and manganese in the right light.

@@eurekaakerue4649 I would personally not recommend drinking from it. Below is my personal take on the safety of uranium glass:
Uranium is actually not particularly dangerous to be around, especially when incorporated into the glass. The type of radiation is mostly alpha radiation, which does not penetrate your skin, and so it is not considered particularly dangerous to be near uranium glass or even to hold it.
It is a debated subject, but I would personally suggest not using the uranium glass to eat off of, just because it's possible to break some small particles of glass off with eating utensils, and it could be dangerous if you were to ingest it. Similarly, if you were to break a piece of uranium glass, you would want to be careful with any dust and small bits when cleaning them up so that you don't breathe them in or end up with pieces of uranium glass in your skin. That's when they would have potential to maybe do some harm.
One additional consideration is leaching. It you were to store liquid inside of uranium glass container, it's possible that some uranium could leach into the liquid, so I would personally not suggest storing liquids in uranium glass and suggest not drinking out of it.
For display purposes, there really isn't much to be afraid of, there isn't much danger there in my opinion.
If you want to learn more, there is plenty of information about this subject available out there on the internet if you search around. But basically most people collecting uranium glass do not consider it to be a particularly dangerous just to have on display, so it's just like collecting anything that you might collect to display in your home.

The few prices that you revealed seemed high not sure if that’s representative of the rest of the mall, but that’s the feeling I have been to other antique malls prices were not that high.
I think general prices in different areas of the country vary greatly, and prices between different vendors certainly vary a lot as well. I even found the same piece with two different vendors in the video, and it was half the price at the second vendor's booth. I certainly shop around, and don't go for the high priced items much myself. There are always treasures to be found though, some vendors do have very good deals.
You should have gone down one more exit to Springfield Antique Center 1735 titus road. I have a whole cabinet in my booth of Uranium glass $6 each.
I go to that antique mall as well, but I was only visiting the one in this video. I'll have to look for your booth when I go there next!

Hey, what is the name of that light you are using?
I actually have a few different lights I use, but the most recent one I got is called Alonefire G700 (395nm version), it's rechargeable and I bought it from Temu. share.temu.com/tWPATMDQQmA. That one's been pretty good for me, it is a UV flashlight only.
I think the one I'm using in most of this video is one of the two I purchased in a two pack on Amazon. Karrong UV Flashlight Rechargeable 2 pack a.co/d/2etLSu8. The thing with these is they can also be used as a regular flashlight, but you have to press the button several times to get it into UV mode each time you turn them on, that's the only annoying thing. It looks like they don't include the batteries with these now so you would need 18650 batteries and a charger. That's the same type of battery that came with the one from Temu as well, I use those in all of my flashlights.

That was Harlequin not fiesta. Harlequin was the "poor man's fiesta" produced by Homer Laughlin and sold exclusively in Woolworth's!
Do you mean the first one in the glass case? I wasn't sure what that one was, but I did think it might be Fiesta. I can't remember for sure, but I might have seen the Homer Laughlin mark on it.
The one that was a pitcher, which I checked with the Geiger, I'm also not sure who made that one. I didn't see a mark.

Are you harlequin was the "poor man's fiesta "? I have a large amount of both and fiesta came in laundry detergent boxes as a gift. That seems cheaper than buying at Wooworths.
Hi first time seeing your channel. I have seen other thrifters check for the glow, but if its made with uranium isn't there a safety issue? Same with radioactive glazes. Please tell me the story behind uranium glass.

Uranium glass mostly puts off particles that don't penetrate skin, and so it is not usually considered dangerous to be near it. The problem is, if you use it to eat from, the utensils could possibly break off small bits that could be consumed, and ingesting them could cause problems. Also, if the glass breaks and you come into contact with glass dust or small bits. One other potential concern is leaching, if you keep liquids inside a uranium glass container. It is possible that some uranium could leach into the liquid.
All that said, many people have used uranium glass over the years, without adverse affects that I know of. So as I said, a debated subject. I personally do not use mine, but I feel comfortable having it around or holding it. No problems there.
As far as uranium in the glaze, I would have the same concerns if you were to use it, so I wouldn't use mine personally, but I feel comfortable having it on display in my home. Hope that helps you. There's plenty of debate and more information out there on the internet about this topic if you want to research it further.

deoresion glass has been reproduced also fiesta ware have to be careful.
Certainly true. With uraniam glass, I personally don't usually care much if it's a reproduction, I just wanted to look good and glow well. But price-wise it matters for sure. If you're looking for something to be valuable in your collection, the originals are usually going to be worth a lot more than reproductions certainly.
The ladles were found in mayonnaise dishes. Yeah they are exensive.
