      That's right Mike and many vets have made that comment under other reactors. When their time was up and they were coming back they sang "I'm Your Captain" by Grand Funk Railroad because of the lengthy chorus "I'm Getting Closer To My Home." I have been told there were other songs that had meaning for them during that time and I am so grateful that for medical reasons I didn't have to experience it because I was called to be drafted when I was 18 in 1971.

    From what I've read, this song was very popular with the soldiers fighting in Vietnam. Watching that video, however, it seems the place they want to escape from is the taxidermied jaws of H.R. Pufnstuf! PS. Eric Burden with and without The Animals? OK. "Don't Bring Me Down", "Spill the Wine", "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", "Monterey", "When I Was Young", "It's My Life", "San Francisco Nights", ...

    The great Irish vocalist Eric Burdon, takes me back to 1966. I was just drafted into the Vietnam war, almost immediately after my senior year in High school, at just 18 yrs old. When over there, we played this song on a cheap turntable one of the guys had his parents send over to him from the states. This song was our Anthem." Burden's gritty and forceful vocals were just what we liked. We really did wanna get outta this place. some of my Buddies, never got to go home.
    This song has both it's good memories of that time, and some very sad ones as well.
    Thank you Harri.

    Classic, I agree his voice was unique. Back in the '60s and '70s artists had talent and not just looks. Again I recommend the classic summer of love song by Eric Burden and the Animals (as they were now called), the iconic 'San Franciscan Nights.' It starts with the unusual 9 notes that began the TV show "Dragnet". They had a LOT of change of members & disbanded several times, this configuration left the blues behind and went more for the psychedelic sound. Here's a list of their many lineups: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Animals#Lineups

    Working class people in Britain had a terrible time after the war; jobs left, mining was dirty and unhealthy, Liverpool, for example, once a great commercial location was devastated....that's what happens when economies crash. Hopelessness. Men need to work. Women often have to work outside the home, but men NEED to work. But they don't need to be crushed by it.

  • @TheScavenger71
    @TheScavenger71 3 года назад +1

    Harri, I have to disagree with your analysis. I think the song is indeed about physical dying. First he talks about his daddy in bed who is dying because he has worked himself to death. Second, early death was a way of life (no pun intended) in places where mining or other dangerous occupations were the main form of employment in some villages and town before today's safety regulations were in place. Also keep in mind that much of England was bombed to rubble during the second World War and there were villages that survived any way that they could even after the war because it took a long time for them to be rebuilt so a person did whatever they had to do to earn money to feed their family even if it meant a man worked himself to death. It was a way of life that fortunately most of us will never know.
