After the band Stray Cats, the lead singer Brian Setzer started a retro-swing band called The Brian Setzer Orchestra and had another hit song called “Jump, Jive, and Wail”.
the Brian Setzer Orchestra was great. Saw them live in germany in 98 or 99 after the Dirty Boogie album. I listened to that album and the Zoot Suit Riot by The Cherry Poppin Daddies hundreds of times.
Guitarist and lead singer Brian Setzer of Stray Cats popularized the Rockabilly sound that started out in the 1950's and went into 1960/1961. After Stray Cats, Brian Setzer brought back the Big Band sound of the 1940's and other bands did the same sound which did became very popular in the late 1980's and into the 1990's. Many couples went to dance schools to learn Big Band dances during that time.
Mr Boyd the Stray Cats spearheaded a revival of the 50's style of music known as Rockabilly. After the Stray Cats were done the lead singer/guitarist helped revive another form of music from wayback - big band swing- with his band The Brian Setzer Orchestra. He won a Grammy for his work with the orchestra. Also both of these songs were hits for The Stray Cats. They were big on MTV back when they still played music videos.
As a teen I wore out the Stray Cat cassette cranked in the car driving with the wind blowing and usually on the way to hang at the beach.. It was singable, groovy and fun. The girls and I would cram in the old VW bug and head off to find boys and bonfires. Ah, the good old days. I'd forgotten... thanks.
Say the Stray Cat's at Rudyard's in Houston TX, GREAT BAR BAND! One of the most fun bands ever, drinking beer and dancing with roller skates on all night long.
I love me some Brian Setzer and his crew. I'm a metal-head at heart, but I love most genres of music. More Brian Stezer please! "Gettin in the mood", "Amricano" and "The Dirty Boogie" are some of my favorites.
Talent! They were great back in the day! They are all talented individuals but Brian went on to form an Orchestra which was just as amazing. If Brian is involved then there’s always going to be high energy and just a joy in whatever music he’s making!❤
This is such a great performance by Brian Setzer and the Stray Cats. Brian is responsible for reviving so much music. And the instruments are simple but masterfully played.
Personally, I prefer the official video of the Stray Cat Strut, but it's a great song and a wonderfully talented band. A very unique style and sound for the 80s. Kind of a throwback to the 50s-2nd song-kind of Rockabilly style. Love both of these songs.
You should look into some recent stuff from Brian Setzer. He's still going strong, and still amazing. He got a fantastic Christmas tour, called "The Brian Setzer Orchestra Christmas Extravaganza." His Rockabilly spin on classic Christmas songs is a real treat! It's Rockabilly fused with Big Band swing.
These two songs were both singles and their biggest hits. In the 80s, rockabilly was old fashioned music. Then these young guys came along who didn't care, the liked the music and played it. They made rockabilly cool again.
Brian Setzer went from a skinny kid with a wild hair-do, to a Rock and Roll Legend. He's responsible for bringing Rockabilly back, and later bringing back Big Band/Swing. One of his traditions was his Christmas Special DVDs. Check that out this year... 🤙🌲⛄ He unfortunately had to retire in recent years due to tinnitus.
He played a semi acoustic Gretsch like Eddie Cochran.Thats how they got that great Rockabilly sound. They were American, but made their name in England like Hendrix and many others.
I feel like The Stray Cats have always been a little underrated. I was in high school in the late 80s and my peers liked it when they came on the radio, but I was the only one of my friends who was actually liked them enough to buy albums and rock the cassettes in my car. Through my whole life when I say the name Brain Setzer it is rare for someone to know who I'm talking about. I guess my suggestion would the "Gene and Eddie"
I've owned their greatest hits CD for decades, and there's no better disk to go driving to. These two plus "Rumble in Brighton" and "Sexy and Seventeen"... I miss Rockabilly.
Brian Setzer is still great! He and his band do a Christmas show tour each year. We’ve caught it several times in Memphis and Nashville. Big band rock a Billy. Fun! fun! Fun!
The jaundra for this music now is Rock-a-Billy, a subsect is Horror-Billy. Check out a band called The Matadors and their song "Evil Eye", though there are great songs by them and other great bands that play both styles.
I agree with you they would have been one heck of a band in the 50's and would be on all the "oldies" albums, but they still even in the "modern age" made a mark in the industry . I did and may still have there first album released in the US but where it is I am not sure of having moved several times since my youth when I first got it, in fact it very well may be on cassette tape and not a record, sadly tape players are few and far between these days.
This style of music is known as "Rockabilly." In the mid 1950s when Elvis, Chuck Barry, Little Richard, and all the rest of them introduced "Rock and Roll, There started to be an offshoot that was sort of a combination of Rock and Roll, infused with Hillbilly, or Redneck style music. Brian Setzer (guitar and lead vocals) is an amazing guitarist.
They first appeared with a groove called 'Runaway Boys' - on the radio. Used to have to wait days sometimes to hear a record played again. Then one night they did an interview and played live. First time EVER airing their new song - Stray Cat Strut. I recorded it off the radio. Then they released it as a single but I always preferred "My" version that I had pirated that night. Capital Radio - London 1980 .. .. .
I saw them live in a pub here in South London, England, back in the day. The pub was full of skinheads. The drummer fell over at one point, banged his head and was carried off stage unconscious. Awesome band, probably much bigger here than in the US.
They're drawing on the history of 1950s rock and roll, which sadly fell off in the U.S. Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent, Carl Perkins, even early Elvis, were the influences for this generation of Rockabilly stars.
This is the start of a rabbit hole. You cant do Stray Cats without Brian Setzer and cant do him without Big Bad Voodoo Daddys. I suggest Why Me and Diga Diga Doo
I had the great pleasure of watching “Fridays” when Stray Cats debuted for the masses. I was totally blown away! Instant fan. And yes, please check out Brian Setzer Orchestra. Also, Fridays was a great show. I find that no one remembers it, sadly.
The Stray Cats were indeed awesome. However, the work that Brian did with The Brian Setzer Orchestra blew past it. They did a cover of Mack the Knife that ROCKS!!!!
Stray Cat strut was my favorite of their songs but I have been more a fan of the Brian Sezter Orchestra who also did a big band version of Rock this Town thats great
When you mention these guy, to most people, these are the two songs that they’ll talk about. They were a two hit wonder(if that’s a thing?) sadly. In the time that they were together(about 10 years, they broke up a lot), they recorded a bunch of really great songs. Runaway Boys and 18 Miles To Memphis being a couple of my favorites
@@rogerdaly6326 yeah. Andrew brought that up a couple days ago. And, I agree. It was a hit song; just not as big of a hit, as the other two. Which is why I initially said what I said. Thank you for playing 😁
I've heard that the first drummer of the Stray Cats had a problem with gambling, and would often offer parts of his drum kit to cover bets. This behavior cost him his position in the band, when Brian Setzer came on stage to prepare for a show, and the drummer's kit was down to a single snare drum. He was supposedly a great drummer, but his inability to protect his instruments from his vices had become too much of a liability to the band.
The first drummer of the Stray Cats was Brian's brother and was very talented...He was playing with his brother Brian Setzer in a band called Bloodless Pharaos
After the band Stray Cats, the lead singer Brian Setzer started a retro-swing band called The Brian Setzer Orchestra and had another hit song called “Jump, Jive, and Wail”.
The Brian Setzer orchestra helped me get into shape back when I was younger. Have you ever tried to pick up a woman while dancing? They are heavy.
The Brian Setzer Orchestra is phenomenal
Powered by Gretsch🎸 🔥
In high school, a friend of mine did a gymnastics routine to this song. It was really good!
the Brian Setzer Orchestra was great. Saw them live in germany in 98 or 99 after the Dirty Boogie album. I listened to that album and the Zoot Suit Riot by The Cherry Poppin Daddies hundreds of times.
@@KaBeeMThat swing revolution was wild. I was living in Chapel Hill, NC, home of the Squirrel Nut Zippers, at the time. That music was everywhere.
And THAT is rockabilly.
The Rockabilly comeback was so much fun. We danced so hard, they were fantastic along with others
The Rockabilly Revival of the early 80s also saw "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" by Queen and "Still Rock and Roll to Me" by Billy Joel.

This was HUGE when I was in high school. It's called rock-a-billy. lol

Check out "Elvis On Velvet" , "Let's Go Faster" , "Gina", "Gonna Ball", " Look at that Cadillac".
Have always loved the rockabilly style. Other bands include Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
Say the Stray Cat's at Rudyard's in Houston TX, GREAT BAR BAND! One of the most fun bands ever, drinking beer and dancing with roller skates on all night long.
this is from a 40 year old show, Setzer was 24 he's 64 now and he's still playing.
In the 80's there was a movement called the Rock-a-Billie" movement in music. The Stray Cats were players in that.
I love me some Brian Setzer and his crew. I'm a metal-head at heart, but I love most genres of music. More Brian Stezer please! "Gettin in the mood", "Amricano" and "The Dirty Boogie" are some of my favorites.
The 70's, before this, and then the 80's was one big dance party. We had clubs.
Talent! They were great back in the day! They are all talented individuals but Brian went on to form an Orchestra which was just as amazing. If Brian is involved then there’s always going to be high energy and just a joy in whatever music he’s making!❤

They were great! A UK '80's boy band version of '50's rock. Lots of fun. Thanks for your reaction.
They blew up on MTV, back when MTV was all about playing music videos.
That's wheteI first heard them.
This is Rockabilly
Nuthin' like a little rockabilly to liven up the evening. Great choice.
I used to listen to the Stray Cats and loved them. Brian did well on his own also. Very talented.
I saw Brian in concert last February. He's awesome and a class act.
Rock This Town almost sounds like it should be a Buddy Holly song.
You should look into some recent stuff from Brian Setzer. He's still going strong, and still amazing.

Wow, this reminds me of my childhood. And 'come on Eileen' by dexys midnight runners.
The legendary Stray Cats. Loved them since 1980. Still do on 2024 and beyond. Kings of rockabilly. ❤
I remember when this came out! We danced our butts off to this!!
These two songs were both singles and their biggest hits. In the 80s, rockabilly was old fashioned music. Then these young guys came along who didn't care, the liked the music and played it. They made rockabilly cool again.
Have this tune on my phone. Sometimes, ya just gotta listen to Stray Cat Strut...

There was a massive rock n roll revival at the time which then sparked the start of Psychobilly

I would have liked to hear early Elvis do Rock This Town.

Brian Setzer was great, he had a Big Band at one time.
The only excuse I will accept for not reacting to ALL of the Brian Setzer catalog is that you decided to listen to it ALL on your own already.
Brian Setzer wanted to move on. In my opinion, he shut down Stray Cats a lot too soon.
